Watching The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms on Amazon. I’ve been on an atomic monster binge lately and finished The Monster that Challenged the World last week. Very generally, the earlier efforts in this genre are much better than the later ones. 20,000 Fathoms, made in 1953, has some wobbly science and poor geography but it features a good cast and some excellent rampaging dinosaur action by Ray Harryhausen.

Though made in 1957, by which time exploitative cheapies were taking over the market, The Monster that Challenged the World also holds up pretty well. I almost didn’t go ahead with it because of its silly misrepresentations of the Salton Sea, where the action takes place. At one point, for example, events are said to be happening at a depth of 350 feet. The Salton Sea is 43 feet deep at its maximum today and has not been more than 60 feet deep at any point in its history. The film also shows moderate surf along the shoreline, which you don’t have on a 6 mile wide lake 200 miles inland. Still, I persisted and it turned out to be pretty good, with Tim Holt in a rare non-western appearance and some fine work by Irish actress Audrey Dalton (who is still with us btw).
The monster is especially good, with a very scary full size critter confronting the humans without photo tricks or miniatures.

I’m old enough to have pretty definite memories of Maynard and his friend Dobie Gillis.

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.

His sidekick and de facto best friend was American television’s first beatnik, Maynard G. Krebs (Bob Denver), who became the series’ breakout character. An enthusiastic fan of jazz music (with a strong distaste for the music of Lawrence Welk), Maynard plays the bongos, collects tinfoil and petrified frogs, and steers clear of romance, authority figures, and work (yelping “Work?!” every time he hears the word). Always speaking with the vernacular and slang of the beatniks and jazz musicians he admired, Maynard punctuates his sentences with the word “like” and has a tendency towards malapropisms.

Ooo boy, I’m already having to explain the “weird statistics” to people on a certail place on the religio-political spectrum, that it is a survey that was designed to find out whose misinformation people who weren’t vaccinated were listening to as basis for their decision to not vaccinate. So, which country/-ies propaganda outlets, covert and overt, apart from having fostered antivaxx, anti-vaxx-mandate, and vaccine hesitancy, has also consistently blamed Ukraina, NATO and the United States for the invasion of Ukraine, as well as run with propaganda directed against Ukraine and the West for years prior to the invasion?

It’s basically a statistical smoking gun…

Also, I can’t wait for other universities doing replication studies, with further refinements, e.g.anti-mask vs. vaxx status anti-mask vs. who’s to blame for the invasion, etc.

There are no flag observances in August (unless there’s a half-mast notice).

Since my “thing” is flag etiquette, I’m working on an article for some of the other flags covered by US law presently or in the past (all legally-adopted flags may be flown in their proper settings), such as service banners (Gold Star and Blue Star banners) and civil ensigns (a civil ensign is a merchant flag—the USA has had several unofficial ones and one official one).

On service ensigns, probably the most famous in the world is the United Kingdom’s Red Ensign (its flag for merchant shipping and adopted by a number of nations defaced with their arms as their nation’s flag). Two Canadian provinces also use a defaced Red Ensign as the provincial flag (Ontario and Manitoba).

On the issue of Canadian vexillology, Canada and her provinces’ flags have a rich and varied history. Since I love digging into vexillology, Canada’s flag history is another subject I want to tee up for the right-hand column of Little Green Footballs for August. (Interestingly in my hunting, I’ve found there are a number of small “c” conservatives in Canada who feel the current national flag was illegally adopted, and the former Red Ensign defaced with the Arms of Canada is the “true” flag.)

I can also dig into the flag histories of other countries if anyone is interested here.

I would enjoy that.

My own interest in less than usual flags is the Guidon. In the modern army they exist for all units, but they started as cavalry flags. This one, that I own a modern copy of, is from the middle of the ACW - the 35 stars representing the states of the union after West Virginia but before Nevada and keeping the stars of the confederacy in place. It is a mirror to our situation today, I think.

That battle was fought between the Golden Horde and various Russian principalities, and was won by the Russians. That battle ended the advance of the Golden Horde, leading eventually to the independence of the Grand Duchy of Moscow and the eventual founding of the Russian state.

They are also wearing the St. Georges orange-and-black military ribbons co-opted by Putin supporters.

My niece and her family are having a terrible time with their Budget rental car. They flew to Denver today, rented a car from Budget, got to their Airbnb , and then the car died on them. Two and half hours after their initial call for assistance, Budget, after first promising to send a tow, called back they couldn’t send anyone out till tomorrow morning.

I wonder if these problems are arising due to the widespread understaffing among so many businesses. Or does this reflect standard Budget operating procedures?

re: #33 William Lewis

Guidons have a very long history, going back to heraldic flags. Heraldic flags or banners date back to ancient times, to denote the presence of the person whom the banner represents.

In American military heraldry, the guidon in the XIX Century represented both the unit and its commander. It was considered a great dishonour for the guidon to fall into enemy hands (which is why Virginia is so keen to recover the 28th Virginia Infantry banner from Minnesota captured at the Battle of Gettysburg).

In modern times, most military units are represented by a guidon. In formations, the guidon provides a point to which members of the formation can visually adjust their marching so lines and columns remain neat.

Heraldic banners used for a sovereign or president are normally called “standards” rather than guidon or banner.

Some heraldic colleges also designate the size of the guidon or banner based on the bearer’s rank, such as Lord Lyon of Scotland.

Heraldic guidons, banners, and unit symbols in the US Military are controlled by the Air Force Office of Heraldry, which was designated for that role by the War Department. When the Army Air Corps became the Air Force, they inherited that duty. Every military unit in the USA must submit a new or changed patch, badge, or guidon for approval by the Air Force Office of Heraldry.

If I dug into this stuff enough, I could write a book about vexillology on guidons, banners, pennants, and pennons, which would be incredibly boring for most people.

When we got our rental car after we rearranged the front of our Smart with an elk, Enterprise had trouble with detailing a driver to come out and pick us up. There seems to be a shortage of employees across the rental car industry.

When we returned the car, we had to park it on the street because their parking lot was full of cars waiting to be moved for service.

Here in Czech Republic, we’ve got a major forest fire in the northeast of the country. Friend of mine told me she could smell the smoke from it in her hometown of Olomouc, which is about 340 km (about 210 miles) away, even though it’s raining.

Thankfully, it is raining, which will help firefighters.

A massive forest fire has been raging in Czech Switzerland for the third day, and several houses have already been affected. Almost all of Hřensko was evacuated. On Tuesday, July 26, after 7 a.m., approximately 150 firefighters from several regions were on the scene, and special equipment from the Rescue Department also arrived to help.

The national park has been burning since Sunday, July 24. Due to the scale and difficult-to-access terrain, the fire department declared a special level of fire alarm, i.e. the highest. Dozens of units from the region and further afield, planes, army and police helicopters intervene on site daily. The situation is not improving, rather the opposite.

Source, in Czech: decinsky.denik.cz

This is the affected area, and yeah, it’s pretty difficult terrain for firefighters: en.wikipedia.org

In the eastern Pacific, there are two tropical waves. Disturbance #1 is south of Baja California, and has is predicted to only have a 10% chance of development into a tropical system within five days.

Disturbance #2 is of more concern. It is 400 miles south of Acapulco, and the National Hurricane Center gives it a 100% chance of developing into a tropical system within two days. Tropical storm watches or warnings are expected later today.

Both storms are moving west-by-north. It is too early to tell if either system will move toward northern Mexico and the American Southwest.

So Smith was a Christian Nationalist but also promoted a form of Socialism.

Nationalism plus Socialism

Wonder how that might work out if someone tried it…maybe give it a catchy abbreviated name.

Trump Republicans are not against Socialism. In a purely political show, DeSantis just last week redirected $450 Covid checks to Floridians marketed as “relief” and directly attributed to his “leadership”. Absolutely no protests were heard from typical Republican pundits decrying “Socialism” by the Florida Government.

This is a sign of things to come when they take control and use their version of Socialism to gain political control and placate the masses as permanent Republican corruption and cronyism becomes entrenched. Welfare and other government assistance in the US is not going away, it will be publicly rebranded as Republican leadership in action and directed towards “soldiers” and “warriors” of the Republican Party.

Those bastards!

It’s a sad day for people who enjoy eating ice cream in taco form.

Klondike has discounted its iconic Choco Taco — a waffle cone shaped like a tortilla, filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with various chocolate goodies and nuts.

The ice cream giant responded to a disappointed Twitter user who heard the social media rumors that the item would be laid to rest.

“Unfortunately, the Choco Taco has been discontinued in both 1ct and 4ct packs,” Klondike confirmed Monday.

“A necessary but unfortunate part of this process is that we sometimes must discontinue products, even a beloved item like Choco Taco,” they told another unhappy fan in a separate tweet.

“We know this may be very disappointing, and hope you’ll try our other delicious frozen treats,” it offered, linking to Klondike’s website.

Yeah that is manslaughter.

Wisconsin Senate Democratic Minority Leader Janet Bewley was involved in a fatal car crash on Friday that left a mother from Pennsylvania and her young daughter dead.

The accident occurred when Bewley, 70, pulled out of the Maslowski beach parking lot in Ashland and into the path of a car driven by Alyssa Ortman, 27, according to the Ashland Police Department.

When Ortman’s car collided with Bewley’s at 12.30pm on Friday, it spun across Highway 2 and was hit by another vehicle.

Ortman’s 5-year-old daughter, Khali, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ortman was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died, according to police.

Mere hours after the crash, in a previously scheduled interview, Bewley told a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel intern she had undergone cataract eye surgery the day before.

There are aspects of “America as a Christian Nation” that I can support: an America that feeds the poor, shelters the homeless and offers asylum to fugitives.

An America where wealth is not the determining factor in society.

An America that is not afraid to drive the moneylenders out of the temple.

Then there is the Christian Nationalist view of America as in returning to an Old Testament Patriarchy, slavery and all. It is no coincidence that so many of those MAGA fellows look like a cross between a Biblical patriarch, a Confederate colonel and a member of ZZ Top.

For Lizards who are lovers of unsolved mysteries, looks like another long-unsolved mystery might well have been solved.

A researcher in the case of the Somerton Man says he has solved the decades-old mystery, identifying the figure as a Melbourne-born electrical engineer.

Adelaide University researcher Derek Abbott believes the unknown man found slumped and lifeless at Adelaide’s Somerton Beach on December 1, 1948, was Carl “Charles” Webb, a 43-year-old engineer and instrument maker.

The case has long baffled detectives and amateur sleuths, and is regarded as one of Australia’s most enduring mysteries because of strange clues linked to it, including a suspected code and a book of Persian poems.

abc.net.au

The only mystery apparently remaining is how he died (suicide or homicide), and if his presumed identity is officially confirmed, why he went to Adelaide.

Trump: death penalty for central park 5 was necessary.
CP5 - we’re innocent, and we just got exonerated for all the charges.
Trump: still deserve death penalty.
CP5+1: turns out that there was a sixth guy who was accused, and took a separate plea deal. Well, he too got exonerated on all the charges as his conviction was overturned. Police seriously fucked up the case, and prosecutors didn’t cover themselves in glory either. They wanted a quick conviction, and cut corners and ignored the facts and evidence.

Trump would have been fine with killing innocents - especially because they were persons of color.

And I won’t even mention the boilerplate RW “Guns are in the Constitution, abortion isn’t” argument.

The point here is that WOMEN are also endowed with a right to make choices about their own bodies, and that right is being trampled over (and women are being put into mortal danger) by a narrow-minded, Fundamentalist view of abortion that is mentioned neither in the Bible nor the Constitution.

Its not really about the two specific issues, but about the ability to sue strangers

While the law might have some effect on gun traffic, the real purpose is to force the Supreme Court to twist itself into knots. The six conservative justices no doubt want to allow the Texas law to stand, but don’t want the California law to stand. By carefully crafting the California law to be as close to the Texas law as possible, albeit about different material, it will be very hard for the justices to say, for example, allowing citizens to sue people they don’t even know is fine in Texas but not fine in California. If they throw caution to the winds and do it anyway, it’s going to drive the Court’s approval even lower, something Newsom probably doesn’t mind.

GOP are actively courting goddamned Nazis, KKKers, and white supremacists because that’s the GOP base. GOP policies are straight out of the Christian fascist playbook, and their SCOTUS picks advance that agenda with impunity.

We keep seeing GOPers openly engaging with the bigot brigade, and Fox incites and engages and enrages the GOP base to focus their anger and ire against the other - people who question the racist misogynist bigoted GOP and their policies.

Meanwhile, we keep seeing the GOP engaging in the very kind of cancel culture woke bulkshit they claim liberals are doing. They’re the ones trying to silence critics, engaging in “grooming” and enabling rapists. They are the ones removing control over women’s bodies by denying women who were raped autonomy and agency over their bodies in all cases. They’re the ones who are going to be slashing health care options for women, because doctors will flee states where women’s reproductive health options are limited by insane know-nothing laws that equate birth control with abortion, that deny women access to care that can save their lives during pregnancy, all while these same states refuse to count a fetus as a person until born alive (for insurance purposes, for dependent tax benefits, etc.).

These fuckers are not going to stop there. They’re a hateful bunch of bigots and seek to deny others their rights.

Understaffing plus putting marginal cars into service because the rental car companies got rid of vast fleets of cars at the beginning of COVID and are now competing with consumers to replace them.

If the Democrats can’t use this kind of stuff to torpedo Mastriano’s campaign straight to the bottom of the ocean, we are doomed.

A lot of conservative Catholics are fine with this sort of thing. They just don’t talk about it. Similar to how they are “fine” with a lot of the dog whistle racist rhetoric, undeserving poor, etc. etc.

County I live in is quite religious and mainly Catholic. Also noting that the Catholic diocese is also combining parishes and essentially shrinking. Citing lack of priests, but I also think their membership is also aging out as well and the tithes are not coming in like they used to.

The Lurgan Canoe

Over 4000 years old, the Lurgan canoe was discovered in 1901 by Patrick Coen as he worked in a Co. Galway bog that had once been a shallow lake. It is carved from a giant oak trunk and measures over 14 m (45ft) long by 1 m wide. The boat is easily the largest artefact on display at the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street and its arrival there involved quite a journey.

It took nearly a month to transport the canoe from Lurgan bog to Milltown railway station, from whence it was brought to Tuam. Here it rested for four days where ‘nearly all in the town paid it a visit of inspection, the great majority taking away chips of it as souvenirs’ (Tuam Herald, January 25, 1902). When finally it arrived in Dublin, the boat was pulled through the streets on specially-linked, horse-drawn carts and its eventual arrival at the front gates of the National Museum can be seen below.

Medical helicopter crashed responding to fatal accident in Butler County, sheriff says

A CareFlight representative released a statement to FOX19 NOW that described the incident as “a hard landing.”

“Early this morning, a CareFlight helicopter operated by Air Methods Corp. responding to a vehicle accident in Butler County contacted wires and experienced a hard landing. The patient was not on board the aircraft, and the three crew were able to safely exit the aircraft. The crew has been taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation. “

It doesn’t seem to be working. For instance, the Czech PM announced today that our gas reserves are now filled to 80% capacity. I believe that Germany is at about that same level. That’s enough to see us through this winter, even if we get a cold winter.

Yikes.

This is why prairie fires are so scary here, especially if there is a wet season the year before.

Last year’s prairie fire which started in Banner County near the Wyoming line got within eight miles of my house. We had water bombers from the US Forest Service and the Coast Guard, and fire departments from as far as three hundred miles away from four states trying to put it out.

That fire was started by a pickup truck dragging a chain over a cattle guard, causing a spark.

Of course the Russo-Ukrainian War is causing problems. But as far as I’m concerned, this is the time to suck it up and hold the course. A little blood and iron (to borrow a phrase from Otto von Bismarck).

That presentation shows good evidence that the ongoing sanctions are having an impact and the longer those sanctions stay in place, the closer Russia will get to (as the paper put it) economic oblivion. They’ll be on their knees for a generation after this and Putin will be remembered not as a modern-day Peter the Great, but rather as a sawdust Tsar who brought his nation to ruin in a fit of imperial folly.

re: #245 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Outside of our local area, we’ll occasionally get nasty looks or comments when I park the Smart in a handicap space.

Somehow the haters can’t seem to equate “small car” and “handicapped wife who uses a cane.”

I also caught shit once at the Commissary at FE Warren AFB from someone in uniform. My wife was worn out from walking around the Commissary, so I walked to the car to drive it to the front of the store. Incoming asshole demanding to know why I’d parked in a handicap space and had a handicap placard when I could obviously walk.

My wife can walk pretty well for short distances, and if she has on jeans or long pants you don’t see her prosthetic right leg. We have never had anyone question us parking in the handicap spots (we do have a placard). If someone did give us shit I would invite them to let my wife take off her leg and beat them about the head and shoulders with it.

The f150, no tags, that goes from 20 to 0 in the length of the parking space, and the guy jumps out and runs into the store.

Down here those people don’t even use the parking spaces
They park in the no parking/ fire zone by the store entrance

John Fetterman is on his A game, and I am LOVING it.

[Embedded content]

While walking with a friend and my sister yesterday, the talk turned as it often does to politics. My friend felt that unless Fetterman starts appearing on the campaign trail to be with real voters, Oz will win; my sister’s counterpoint was the fable of our Cook County Board President John Stroger who was struck down by a major stroke in the last few weeks of the primary campaign but his staff said that he would recover. My sister worked at the City Colleges and the message there was that everyone needed to vote for Stroger. He won the primary but the severity of his condition (he may have been brain dead at the time) was concealed from the public for several months; he then “withdrew” and his son took his place on the ballot. Nepotism and machine politics at its finest.

That’s the source of the virus.
The pandemic began when the health emergencies weren’t taken seriously

- You know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April.

- when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done

- It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear. And from our shores, we — you know, it could get worse before it gets better. It could maybe go away. We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows

Looks like Viktor Orbán has got some fallout from his recent Hitlerian rant:

A Trump advisor would’ve stayed on and written a book deploring it later.

Hungary probably doesn’t offer those riches to administration officials who retire from the government.

Another tidbit of local history. There is a story behind this grave. Yes, I actually went and found it.

The story of Lyda Southard, Twin Falls very own serial killer, is one that still fascinates me to this day. Her nickname was Lady Bluebeard, assuming because Bluebeard himself had seven wives and she is suspected of killing many of her husbands.

You probably noticed that the name on the tombstone doesn’t match. That may be explained here.

Sounds like the 1998 episode “Damaged” from L&O; the only difference being that apparently this girl said “No”. In any case, another disgraceful action from the not-great state of Texas.

I only get annoyed at the people who don’t have some kind of tag on their car.

Yesterday I went to the store and there was a car parked across TWO DISABLED SPACES.

Walmart’s market value dropped by $36 billion after shares sank by 10 percent on Tuesday morning — a day after the retail giant’s prediction that profits would fall as surging prices for food and fuel prompted customers to cut back on discretionary purchases.

The $361 billion retailer saw its share price fall from $132 to $121 as the market opened on Tuesday, with it’s market value dropping to $325 billion as shares are still down by more than 7.7 percent after a small rebound by the afternoon.

Just one day prior, Walmart, a bellwether for the retail sector that caters to cost-conscious shoppers, said its full-year profit would decline 11 to 13 percent, compared to the one percent fall it previously forecasted.

snip

Neil Saunders, managing director of retail at GlobalData, called the warning a ‘cause for concern’ for Walmart that highlighted the pressure on retailers across the board.

‘As the country’s largest retailer, Walmart is a bellwether for the entire sector,’ he said.

‘Its downgrading of second quarter and full fiscal guidance is a cause for concern and highlights the pressure that all retailers are currently under.’

re: #202 lawhawk

I can’t help but wonder if there’s a bit of racism creeping into that sentencing. Harshest sentence going to black guy while others who did the same crime got lesser sentences…

Of course that occurred to me as well.

About Ponder:

1) Sentence tied with another Capitol invader.

2) He ended up with a judge who gives harsher sentences.

3) He beat a Capitol policeman with a metal pole.

re: #229 Dangerman

some of the country maybe could claim that in ‘16
no one sentient could claim it in ‘20

What I am seeing from the 3-4 people who I know voted for Trump in 2016 and half of whom I suspect voted for Trump in 2020 is pretty much silence. They don’t wish to discuss politics at all beyond some minor carping about this or that particular sub-issue.*

For most of them I expect they will pull solid GOP ticket in 2022 and 2024 in any case. They have thoroughly convinced themselves that the Democrats are the root of all evil and only voting for Republicans is the only solution. Willful ignorance or secret approval of the nastiness coming from the various GOP officials and candidates pretty much amounts to the same thing.

* - One linked to a recent Dilbert with the new “gender identified” character and made some snarky remark about the modern workplace. Along with a group of echo chamber “me too” comments. Using Dilbert as confirmation is pretty much a monstrous strawman.

Seen that. Plus once one with the jacked up suspension that almost requires a stepladder to get in and out of.

Ah, the special snowflake parking.

I’ve seen Wegmans with a specific parking lane for picking up ordered groceries. (And have also gone into the store when a specific car is there and that car is still there when I came out 20 minutes later.)

I’ve also seen cars with no driver parked there. Implying misuse, or maybe someone gone into the store to see what the delay is.
