Breaking: DOJ Investigating Trump’s Actions in Jan. 6 Criminal Probe

Politics • Views: 19,484

At the Washington Post (gift link; no paywall): Justice Dept. investigating Trump’s actions in Jan. 6 criminal probe.

Prosecutors who are questioning witnesses before a grand jury — including two top aides to Vice President Mike Pence — have asked in recent days about conversations with Trump, his lawyers, and others in his inner circle who sought to substitute Trump allies for certified electors from some states Joe Biden won, according to two people familiar with the matter. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

The prosecutors have asked hours of detailed questions about meetings Trump led in December 2020 and January 2021; his pressure campaign on Pence to overturn the election; and what instructions Trump gave his lawyers and advisers about fake electors and sending electors back to the states, the people said. Some of the questions focused directly on the extent of Trump’s involvement in the fake-elector effort led by his outside lawyers, including John Eastman and Rudy Giuliani, these people said.

In addition, Justice Department investigators in April received phone records of key officials and aides in the Trump administration, including his former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, according to two people familiar with the matter.

This is not possible. I’ve been assured the DOJ has not even begun to investigate.

If Trump actually ends up in prison I might even start believing in the justice system again.

Wait, let’s not be too hasty about that.

Thread six tweets.

Christians can’t stand she’s an atheist. The biggest pushback when she first ran for office was from Democrats, not Republicans. In this election, Democratic candidates she defeated pulled out the same trick.

Republicans stick to the tried and true gay-bashing, single mother, and socialist talking points.

Jeff Fortenberry’s (R-NE1-Felon) lawyer is now in hot water with the judge in his case. The judge wants to know why he shouldn’t be referred to California’s authority for sanctioning lawyers.

Fortenberry was convicted of lying to the FBI and taking a $30,000 cash campaign donation in a literal brown paper bag from a Nigerian billionaire, while fundraising for his Nebraska reëlection campaign in California.

He was sentenced to probation and a $25,000 fine.

Judge wants to know why he shouldn’t sanction Fortenberry attorney over closing argument (Omaha World-Herald, half an hour ago)

Judge Stanley Blumenfeld Jr. has turned his attention to Fortenberry’s lead attorney, John Littrell of Los Angeles.

A stickler, Blumenfeld bristled at a portion of Littrell’s closing argument to jurors concerning Fortenberry’s fate. The judge’s concern: Littrell had suggested to jurors that Fortenberry had testified in the case — through his taped statements to the FBI. Even though Fortenberry had not testified in court and even though the judge had admonished jurors that they were forbidden from holding Fortenberry’s silence against him.

Moments after jurors began deliberating Fortenberry’s fate in March, Blumenfeld upbraided Littrell over his argument. He noted that he had made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that jurors were not to consider Fortenberry’s silence in their deliberations. He then took the rare step of initiating an “order to show cause” as to whether Littrell should be “sanctioned and/or referred to the standing committee on (attorney) discipline” in California.

The problem: Prosecutors are not allowed to bring up how defendants refused to testify or speculate as to why they didn’t testify. In turn, the defense isn’t allowed to testify for their client or suggest reasons their client didn’t testify, beyond the fact that it’s their constitutional right to not testify. In short, closing arguments are supposed to be centered on actual evidence presented at trial, not on what witnesses would have said.

Exclusive: Neo-Nazi Marine Plotted Mass Murder, Rape Campaigns with Group, Feds Say

While tasked with protecting the nation, Matthew Belanger was plotting a killing spree against minorities and to rape “white women to increase the production of white children,” according to federal prosecutors

Federal prosecutors say a former U.S. Marine plotted mass murder and sexual assault to “decrease the number of minority residents” in the United States as part of his membership in a far-right neo-Nazi group, “Rapekrieg.”

Matthew Belanger was arrested on June 10 in New York and charged with making false statements to a federal firearms licensee in order to make straw purchases of an assault rifle and handgun. Belanger pleaded not guilty to the firearms charges during an arraignment hearing on Monday.

In a July 14 court memo, federal prosecutors say that while a Marine, Belanger plotted far more serious crimes as part of the neo-Nazi group. The memo says Belanger trained with airsoft guns in the woods of Long Island as part of a plot to attack the “Zionist Order of Governments.” The memo also says Belanger was the subject of an FBI Joint Terrorism Taskforce investigation into allegedly plotting to “engage in widespread homicide and sexual assault.” Much of Belanger’s ideology and plotting, the memo says, is based around a desire to lessen the number of nonwhite Americans and to rape “white women to increase the production of white children.”

The most likely scenario is that the stage reenters over the oceans. There is however a “non-zero probability of the surviving debris landing in a populated area—over 88 percent of the world’s population lives under the reentry’s potential debris footprint,” according to an Aerospace Corporation post stated July 26.

“A reentry of this size will not burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere, and the general rule of thumb is that 20-40 percent of the mass of a large object will reach the ground, though it depends on the design of the object,” the post states.

However, many upper stages make uncontrolled reentries. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said last year ahead of the reentry for the booster that launched Tianhe that it was “common practice across the world for upper stages of rockets to burn up while reentering the atmosphere.”

A recent Nature Astronomy paper assesses that current practices mean there is a 10 percent chance of uncontrolled reentries causing one or more casualties over a decade.

one thing that strikes me about how long it’s taken before we all became aware of what the DOJ is doing in regards to the previous administration is that when I think on it…

1) its a new DOJ, and with the amount of purging and whittling of the ranks that must have taken place with TFG, it’s taking time for them to fill positions and still change the direction from partisan to one of law enforcement.

2) with an actual professional in charge, he saw no need to be transparent about who and what was being investigated, without leakage to the press, much less Congress. Some of that could be due to the purge of TFG’s former staff as well, no one left to give a warning about what was in progress.

3) they’re actually inundated with so much crime that they do not have the staff to keep up…
a) TFG campaign finance violations
b) the Hatch Act violations
c) did anyone even bother to investigate the 2016 elections?
d) the light treason he committed with Russia
e) the 2020 election/attempted coup
f) and most likely, a whole boatload of shit we don;t know about as reporters protected their access

and the scary part about three…. is how many goddamn people have to have been involved.

So, while I wish these legal wheels ground faster, I want them to grind thoroughly and I want them all…. everyone who financed, planned, did and covered up…. I want them all.

According to the City of Iqaluit, they point out of the tax-exempt organistions in the city, half are churches.

In that thread are deniers of the residential school murders, complainers that atheists are bigots for wanting to tax churches, &c.

Iqaluit says city social services are suffering due to the hit to the property tax base in the city.

One of the things the bylaw says is they actually have to provide a social service (religion doesn’t count) to receive a tax break.

I can relate with our little village, where the Lutheran Church owns 1/8th of the land, meaning all of that is taken out of the tax base. You would think Christians of other faiths (since atheists don’t count in our country) would be upset at supporting a different church, but it turns out they’ll all hang together when it comes to tax exemptions.

I get why tax exemptions for churches and ministers first came about in our country: Churches and ministers provided services that the weak government of the XVIII and XIX Centuries couldn’t provide, particularly in frontier areas. A circuit rider minister or priest could come to town, record marriages and births, churches kept those records, they distributed humanitarian aid when such services by the government didn’t exist and secular Community Chests had not yet been set up, &c.

Those days are past. The government is capable of all those functions now.

As for actual charitable work, I have no problem with a church receiving a tax exemption for that. If they’re out running a soup kitchen or a clothing pantry or even organising a town clean-up: Wonderful! Keep those books and leave them open to inspection like real charities, and I have no problem with a tax exemption for that work.

Collecting land, vestments, sending Christians to other nations with Christians to try to convert Christians from one brand name to another in Christianity, financing hate legislation in other nations against LGBT+ people or the group du jour they hate: Nope. My tax money should not pay for that. My atheist tax dollars pay for city maintenance at the building across the street which does none of those good works. Their snapping up land means my taxes are higher to pay city services. The church uses those services (water, sewer, trash collection, fire brigade, marshal) and doesn’t pay a penny for them.

I got that when I briefly had a place to live during my homeless period in Liberty, Missouri.

I was the resident target in the neighbourhood for the Mormon Tabernacle there for their missionaries.

When my house was hit by a tornado on May 4, 2003 and I was rendered homeless again, the Salvation Army was warned by the Mormons who the non-Christians in the neighbourhood were, so the SA would be sure not to serve us things like hot emergency meals.

Even stipulating those churches are charitable organisations, if a charitable organisation cannot raise funds for its work, it goes under. Why should churches as a class get a special break?

I don’t know if it happened because of tax exemption fights, but of the two biggest Catholic things in NYC, the Cloisters became city property (it’s administered by the Metropolitan Museum), and St Patrick’s Cathedral, other than during actual services, is open to the public for free (it’s architecturally significant, and there’s ALWAYS a gazillion tourists in the place).

The diocese is responsible for all upkeep and operating costs, although NYPD will help out when ACT UP or the pro-choice organizations do protests there.

142
sagehen  Jul 27, 2022 • 1:49:00am

But the church that does the most charitable stuff in the city is an episcopal church; Holy Apostles.

Hot meals M-F, backpacks full of non-perishables distributed on Fridays so families are fed over the weekend, social services available, med clinics, packages of socks and underwear and toiletries distributed, no proselytizing, etc.

They do such a good job of it that mosques, synagogues, hindu temples, and various kinds of christian congregations kick in on the fundraising and supply volunteers.

An acquaintance of mine in London has taken up with the Hare Krishnas, and one of their key principles is that nobody who lives within a five miles of any HK temple should go hungry, so she is out regularly with their food trucks.

Though you are right about St. Patrick’s Cathedral, The Cloisters in Upper Manhattan has never (outside of the provenance of its reconstructed architecture and the artworks it holds) had any connection with “the Catholic Church” per se : it was always a private project, and was financed and handed over to the Metropolitan Museum by one of the Rockefellers in the 1930s.

*sighs* So apparently, there is some discussion among tinfoilers whether Marburg is a Western-engineered bioweapon or not. I responded thus:

Marburg is not a bioweapon. It belongs to a type of diseases called viral hemorrhagic fevers, or VHF’s… It is by no means the nastiest VHF.
As I recall, its point of origin is a bat population, not even that uncommon.
Just goes to show how dangerous zoonoses (when diseases jump species) can be, and what can happen when humans encroach on previously untouched areas or cause ancient disease reservoirs to be exposed again.
And it’s not unheard of that people don’t have any defence against something they’ve never been exposed to. It has happened in animal to human disease jumps, as well as human to human transmission as well….
It’s why emerging diseases (that is, newly discovered ones) can be so deadly.

It seems some people simply can’t resist grifting the marks some more….

A half-blind shark that is typically thought to live in freezing Arctic waters, scavenge on polar bear carcasses and survive for hundreds of years, recently turned up in perhaps an unexpected place—a coral reef off Belize. This marks the first time a shark of its kind has been found in western Caribbean waters off the world’s second longest barrier reef.

Also manslaughter.

A former staffer for disgraced Gov. Andrew Cuomo was killed by a passing car after he was kicked out of a Lyft by an angry driver while in the middle of a Delaware thoroughfare.

Sidney Wolf, 43, was fatally struck on Coastal Highway (Route 1) at about 1:44 a.m. Sunday when the driver stopped in the left lane and told Wolf and five of his friends to get out, according to the Delaware State Police.

“Shocked & saddened to hear this tragic news,” Cuomo tweeted about his former senior policy advisor. “Sid was a phenomenal public servant who worked relentlessly for the betterment of all NY’ers.”

A driver of a Toyota Corolla behind the Lyft - which was possibly a Honda Pilot - switched lanes to avoid the stopped SUV and hit Wolf who had just gotten out of the rear passenger side and was standing in the roadway.

I personally would be fine if churches lost their special status and then got to be treated under the same 501(c) rules as any other charitable organization. Level playing field and all that.

Some states do have some additional leniency regarding such organizations owning property and such, which I don’t have a problem with. However, I seem to recall there are some pretty solid rules about the organizations using funds for political purposes or making direct political statements.

All of which I think is a better thing than allowing a bunch of PACs to take shelter by claiming to be a “church” and try to get all those benefits.

All these right wingers are insistent that they’re going to sue X, Y, and Z, because they think they’ve been wronged, but all they do would be expose themselves to discovery on the very issues they’re suing about.

We’d see all the dirty laundry. We’d likely learn how they’re funded, who knows who is lying about everything, but saying something different to the public, and their roles in all kinds of misconduct.

Yeah, discovery is a bitch. It’s one reason that all the threats of right wingers suing never amounts to much, because their lawyers generally know that it’d be bad for their clients (unless their client is Trump, in which case, he thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room and the rules don’t apply to him).

That the DOJ is closing in on Trump is a good thing. Indicting Trump would not make the current political situation worse; doing nothing would make everything worse, because it’d signal that there are some people who are above the law and could literally and figuratively kill half a million people, and never be held to account.

They are in a position to pull of a legal coup. Any if they have to “bend” some laws to facilitate things, they will make sure to blow up enough smoke that it all goes unnoticed
- or at least unprosecuted - until it is too late.

If its legal and legitimate its not a coup
If its legal-ish, its not legal or legitimate

Trump brought out a lot of numbskulls, but also, if Jeb or one of the others had won the presidency and then lost to Biden, none of this would ever have occurred to any of them. Oh yeah. As I typed that I realized, “duh, it’s a cult and we all know it.”

I cannot find an article that supports that statement that there is a woman currently on a ventilator, as opposed to women who endured life-threatening sepsis because of Texas policies but survived. The article cited talked about women who had been in danger (past tense) but not someone currently still facing danger. I’m sure there are such women but not one that is publicized anywhere.

Sadly, it will only be a matter of time before a woman or girl dies. As to why it’s not publicized, it could have to do with pending litigation or the next of kin being too busy with the situation to complain with the press.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is set to deliver the largest back-to-back rate increase in decades on Wednesday, with investors seeking signs he is open to shifting to smaller moves from September.

The Federal Open Market Committee is expected to raise rates by 75 basis points for a second straight meeting — the most aggressive tightening since the 1980s. The decision will be announced at 2 p.m. in Washington. No quarterly forecasts will be released and Powell will hold a press conference 30 minutes later.

And likely, a matter of a relatively small time. What I find notable is that there have been a spate of life-threatening horror stories which have been publicized virtually immediately after the Roe overturn. Unfortunately, I think the next Savita Halappanavar case is probably going to happen within a few months or so. And even more unfortunately, unlike Ireland (due to our fragmented federal system), any public outrage will be diffused and have less likelihood of practical effect.

I know, small town news -

- but what caught my eye was this statement in the article:

Board member Blake Nelson said the sale of beer at concerts hasn’t resulted in any major problems and there’s a “good track record.” He also noted sales in the stadiums at Ohio State and Oregon have resulted in reductions in any incidents by as much as 50%.

I’m guessing that’s because there’s less “front-end loading” at a tailgate party and also having to spend $9 for a beer in stadium likely slows consumption down a bit.

I would nave no problem with a “Christian America” if that meant an America that fed the hungry, sheltered the homeless and gave asylum to refugees. If it were a nation where wealth did not automatically imply superior status and one in which moneylenders did not go near the temples.

But the “Christian America” that a lot of people like to promote uses Jesus as a poster child or cheerleader to get people to sign on and then moves right back to a patriarchal Old Testament hierarchy complete with wives and daughters as chattels, slaves and bondsmen, and no end of smiting and dancing on the bones of the Enemies of the Lord.

Historical Jesus would have been pro-immigration; he would have been a “globalist” and against borders separating nations, because he saw us all as G-d’s children. He inspired John Donne’s great poem “No man is an island”. Christian nationalist is an oxymoron.

Stan Lee, 1968…

STAN’S SOAPBOX
Let’s lay it right on the line. Bigotry and racism are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today.
But, unlike a team of costumed super-villains, they can’t be halted with a punch in the snoot, or a zap from a ray gun. The only way to destroy them is to expose them — to reveal them for the insidious evils they really are. The bigot is an unreasoning hater — one who hates blindly, fanatically, indiscriminately. If his hang-up is black men, he hates ALL black men. If a redhead once offended him, he hates ALL redheads. If some foreigner beat him to a job, he’s down on ALL foreigners. He hates people he’s never seen— people he’s never known — with equal intensity — with equal venom.
Now, we’re not trying to say it’s unreasonable for one human being to bug another, But, although anyone has the right to dislike another individual, it’s totally irrational, patentiy insane to condemn an entire race — to despise an entire nation — to vilify an entire
religion. Sooner or later, we must learn to judge each other on our own merits.
Sooner or later, if man is ever to be worthy of his destiny, we must fill our hearts with tolerance. For then, and only then, will we be truly worthy of the concept that man was created in the image of God — a God who calls us ALL — His children.
Pax et Justitia,
Stan.

“…I think they need to go out and do about five years of hard time busting rocks out there, making them into gravel for their food. You know, just get them out of this country if they’re so bad they’ve illegally crossed and committed crimes.”

That sort of misanthropic racist drivel plays well with the base and it is 90% grandstanding although he’d happily vote for it if it did come up in a bill

So, attempted murder is charged as aggravated assault.

I imagine the two upstanding citizens in this video have no assets the family in the car or the Acura dealership could go after.

It doesn’t look a whole lot different today. Eastbourne Pier.

Not all has been well. Eastbourne Pier on fire 30 July 2014.

Two thirds of the structure was saved. The iconic domed pavilion was not damaged. There were no casualties during the fire, but a workman was killed when he fell through damaged decking during the repairs.

re: #198 Hecuba’s daughter

This is from that AP article:
Munoz said he faced an awful predicament with a recent patient who had started to miscarry and developed a dangerous womb infection. The fetus still had signs of a heartbeat, so an immediate abortion — the usual standard of care — would have been illegal under Texas law.

“We physically watched her get sicker and sicker and sicker” until the fetal heartbeat stopped the next day, “and then we could intervene,” he said. The patient developed complications, required surgery, lost multiple liters of blood and had to be put on a breathing machine “all because we were essentially 24 hours behind.”
