You’re welcome.

I remember when I was a kid when M&Ms first came out and they were only in 2 colors—tan or dark brown.

Not suggesting it isn’t possible…

re: #159 Romantic Heretic

Seriously?

If I was playing War Thunder, chose a T34/76, and had Leopard 2s or even M48s show up on the opposing team I’d quit in a second. Everything in my arsenal would probably bounce and they’s one shot me.

A 120mm APFSDS-DU round from the Leo 2 hitting the front glacis plate of a T-34 would be one way to remove the engine out of the rear of the hull…

That said this is more like when US collectors got back Shermans and Hellcats we gave to Yugoslavia in the 50’s. That’s why a lot of WWII based war movies were shot there - Kelly’s Heroes for example. Now many of those tanks are in collections and museums here. Those T-34/85’s will be used in similar ways, not in combat.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 9 January that the country received 30 vintage T-34/85 medium tanks from Laos that are to be used in military parades, museum exhibitions, and films about World War II.

The tanks, which until recently were in the inventory of the Lao People’s Army (LPA), were shipped to the Russian port city of Vladivostok from where they are being delivered by train to the town of Naro-Fominsk near Moscow.

The move comes as the LPA is being modernised. A Laotian military source told Jane’s on 19 December 2018 that Russia had begun delivering upgraded T-72B1 main battle tanks to the service, pointing out that the LPA is set to receive “several dozen” of these tanks.

Laotian Defence Minister Lieutenant General Sengnuan Xayalat told Russian broadcaster Zvezda that the LPAF would receive Russian-made weaponry and platforms, including “new T-72 tanks”.

It is believed that the LPA still has around 10 T-34/85s in service, with an additional 20 believed to be in storage. The LPA could still operate a T-34/85 battalion comprising 31 vehicles, according to Zvezda.

The Laotian T-34/85s were licence-built in Czechoslovakia in the mid-1950s. In the late 1980s the tanks underwent some minor upgrades that focused on the vehicles’ engines, transmissions, and communication suites.

When I was a kid, we didn’t have candy, we just had rocks covered in sugar. Hell, we didn’t have chocolate. We used to have to paint rocks brown. If we wanted milk chocolate, we had to throw them at cows and immediately eat the ones that didn’t get trampled.

Luxury. When I were young, I had to wake up half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cuppa hot gravel, work 28 hours a day at mill and beg the owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home at night, our mothers would slice us in two with a breadknife while dancing and singing “Hallelujah,” but if you tell the young people of today that, they’d never believe you.

re: #21 William Lewis

The M1A2 Abrams that are being supplied to Ukraine are “monkey model” tanks without the really good stuff, same as the Challenger 2s the UK government is intending to supply i.e. no Dorchester armour suites. They might get Chobham armour depending but even that forty-year-old design is still classified as secret.

These new “game changing” Western tanks are not actually going to change the game much in Ukraine and they’re not going to be fielded there soon since they need crews trained to operate them, spare parts, engineers trained to maintain them, ammunition etc. There’s also the issue that these Western tanks are typically five to ten tonnes heavier than anything either side is operating now and there are a lot of bridges and road structures that simply can’t cope with the extra weight, never mind the vehicle transporters and rail flatcars required to move them around. Indeed it’s possible something the size of an Abrams won’t fit in some road and rail tunnels in the area.

I like Amazon because I can shop for things I cannot get here.
Had very little problems and when I did it was a seamless fix.
So I had a memory jog of a certain candy.
Turkish Delight.
Long ago and far away I had some.
Like the fabled Argentinian strawberry fruit filled candy.
Uhhhhhhh.
So I ordered a box.
Got it.
Four flavors, very nice sugar bombs the first time.
Nice nice nice.
Ordered another, not from the same seller, but Amazon fulfilled. And only orange.
Because.
Even had a pop up ask if I wanted ” Amazon packaging” hiding what it was.
Yes. Good. Do that.
Came today a day early.
No packaging.
Just a box of candy sliding on the floor of a few trucks.

The flour coating was blowing out as you squeezed it.
I can return it.
No you can’t.
Yes I will.
So crawling through I talk to Shivanna from Mumbai and she is such a sweetheart (I hope) and we are smiley face and all good and warm and fuzzy and I must wait another week and such is small disappointments.
They were not going to accept reimbursement.
Thank you Shivanna.
Now I wait again for a small treat…..

I imagine the call desks in India.
“What is a good American name?”

Shivanna was a good one.

As a child raised in the early 70s, I remember Mom and Dad hosting bridge club every so often. Plain and peanut M&Ms would show up in covered glass bowls in the living room, den, and kitchen. The trick was to try to sneak away with as many as possible before my younger brother and I were supposed to go to bed early. Yep, back in the day when chain smoking was normal, the weekend began on Wednesday, and a 5-year-old kid could sleep through it all.

I read that before you posted it.

There once was a lady named Bright
Who could travel far faster than light
She set out one day
In a relative way
And returned the previous night

On AI: somehow an algorithm thinks I am a rabid fan of the Detroit Red Wings hockey team. This is not true. A algorithm thinks I like crocs This is not true. An algorithm recommends the Carls Jr fast food chain to me as a premium option. This is decidedly not true

On Arizona Campus Carry: Bad X ten to the 30th power idea. Having the children of the lunatics I went to school with armed does not make for a relaxed environment. News flash, University of Arizona and surrounding has large amounts of drinking going on and arming those chumps on the stroll home through campus well no.

Found this simple one somewhere, and at first it looked good but I soon found out it was crap. So I had to dig in and write my own.

I have made a serious mistake. I’m growing herbs and peppers in my office. I have a Hawaiian Chili Peppers plant and one marked ‘Tabasco’ at Home Depot. I assumed they just named it a brand because they also have a ‘Chipotle’ pepper plant. There’s no such thing as a chipotle pepper: it’s a jalapeno that’s been smoked.

Turns out Tabasco and Hawaiian chili peppers are the same species. I have to consider murdering one plant.

Central Bucks librarian says he was directed to remove Holocaust survivor’s quote from window for violating advocacy policy

Later in the article, it was said that the librarian was told he could restore the quote. Was this removal supposed to be as part of a statewide policy or was this specific to that community?

T-34-85s saw some action in Vietnam, though most enemy tanks were T-54/55s or the amphibious PT-76.

Blake Clark joked about encountering tanks on the Laotian border. Couldn’t find a standup with his tank jokes - here’s a 1987 video re his service in the early 1970s;

Now that there is a Democratic governor, won’t this legislation be vetoed?

It was sunny and 60F at 10:30 this morning so I went for a nice 21 mile bike ride. I think the first ride that wasn’t short and cold in 2 months. I lost my gloves because I took a break at the half way point and set them on my rack instead of sticking them to some velcro. Took off and didn’t remember for the first 5 miles. I found a leatherman tool after that so … I don’t use a leatherman because I always worked with electricity.

With apologies to the cast of “Not the 1948 Show” and the Pythons.
