Is this what people want their kids to look like?

A serial sperm donor who has fathered 550 children is being sued amid accusations his prolific donations increases the risk of accidental incest.

The Netherlands’ Donorkind Foundation is taking Jonathan Jacob Meijer to court to stop him donating sperm and accuses him of lying about the number of children he has fathered.

Dutch sperm clinic guidelines say donors should donate a maximum of 25 children or to 12 women to prevent inbreeding, incest or psychological problems for donor children.

The civil case is being brought by a Dutch mother of one of Mr Meijer’s children, who has been named only as Eva and had the child in 2018.

‘If I had known he had already fathered more than 100 children I would never have chosen him,’ she said.

‘If I think about the consequences this could have for my child I am sick to my stomach.’

Donorkind wants the court to order Mr Meijer to stop donating and to find out which clinics he has donated to.

It also wants all his sperm in storage to be destroyed unless it is reserved for a woman who already has one of his children.

“We are taking action against this man because the government is doing nothing,” Donorkind foundation chairman Ties van der Meer said.

“He has a global reach via the internet and he does business with large, international sperm banks.”

Wingnuts are already trying to say the murder is a transwoman (circulating some photograph which probably isn’t her).

Terminology is thoroughly causing massive confusion in regards to this shooting
Police ID’d shooter as female, Police chief referred to shooter as she - “she identified as transgender”
“…Hale reportedly identified as transgender and used the pronouns he / him. …”

There’s a link to a video on CNN’s home page titled “Jon Stewart: This is why Trump became popular in the first place”. I don’t want to click on it, because I have a feeling it’s Jon getting his Merrick Garland on and making an argument we shouldn’t indict Trump on anything, because it’ll just energize the MAGAts.

I could be wrong, but I’m not in a great mood and I don’t want to give potential horseshit like that the clicks.

Police ID’d shooter as female, Police chief referred to shooter as she - “she identified as transgender”
“…Hale reportedly identified as transgender and used the pronouns he / him. …”

So, born female, self-identified as male, took testosterone for some degree of transitioning, but still called “she” by the cops.

I thought it was odd when the shooter was ID’d as female, which is not anywhere near the norm, is it?

But just add testosterone, a giant dose of bigoted hate, and easy access to guns, and Bingo!

Inevitable, sadly, for all involved.

Philly tourism has taken some really weird turns over the last few years.

Actually, 3:30 tomorrow is when Philly is testing the water again, due to a latex spill north of the city. There was a run on bottled water both there and here in South Jersey, because it looked like the water may not be potable for a bit.

So far, so good.

See above. About 12,000 gallons of the latex was dumped late Friday from a plant in Bristol about 5-10 miles north of Philly and also sits on the Delaware. There’s a water treatment plant in that stretch and everyone’s been keeping a real close eye on it.

So far, everything’s coming up negative.

Honestly there has been no actual reporting that the shooter has ever taken testosterone.
Identifying as transgender and using “he/him” pronouns does not equate to actual transitioning.
I’ll also point out the article I shared also refers to the shooter as “she”
“… She had shot open a side door before opening fire on students and staff with two assault-style rifles and a handgun. …”
several paragraphs prior to stating the chosen pronouns.
Like I said, terminology, along with cultural bias, is going to cause a great deal of confusion for some time.

This is worse than embarrassing, it is a national disgrace.

Italian art experts astonished by David statue uproar in Florida

The Florence museum that houses Michelangelo’s statue of David has invited teachers and students from a Florida school to visit, after an uproar over an art lesson.

The school’s principal quit after a complaint about a sixth-grade art class that included an image of the statue.

A parent had complained the image was pornographic.

Cecilie Hollberg, director of Galleria dell’Accademia, has now issued the invitation to the class.
She said the principal should be “rewarded, not punished”.

“Talking about the Renaissance without showing the David, an undisputed icon of art and culture and of that historical period, would make no sense,” Ms Hollberg said.

It’s money, but it’s also Mush convincing himself that those polls he did about stepping down could only find against him if they were botted.

It amounts to “democracy did not create the results I want, therefore we must create a ‘democracy’ that creates my result.”

As always, he’s creating a facade rather than addressing problems in a way that would actually solve them. The future is just bots paying for checkmarks, which might be a filter for cheap scammers and admen but no issue at all for a larger operation.

Some of the founders couldn’t imagine a slightly more egalitarian society where it wouldn’t be perfectly normal to have a citizen slave patrols, and therefore affirmed an amendment perfectly suitable to their expectations of who would be armed and why.

The founders were not soft-focus super Gandhi out-their-time saints. Some of ‘em were trying but there’s no need to put Vaseline on the lens.

They hated the idea of a standing army, especially in New England, after the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and Cromwell, hence the fantasy of the white property owners and their adult sons making up a part time militia. This fit well with the slave patrols of the south.

Reading the Militia Acts of 1792 is quite enlightening about what they really thought about the 2nd amendment.

The second amendment is intractably ambiguous. WTF is the militia clause doing there? But the authors of the constitution were competent lawyers, and if a competent lawyer drafts something that’s ambiguous, there’s a reason for that.

Here it’s easy enough to see what is going on — a second amendment that was a pure individual RKBA would not have been acceptable, because of course the founders were against that. So the militia clause was put in there to allow each state to limit the RKBA as it saw fit.

Not so incidentally, this line of reasoning utterly demolishes Scalia’s reasoning in Heller. The only acceptable “originalist” reading of the second amendment is to let the states do at they please with the militia clause as a tool to determine what the RKBA should be in that state.

The point is to designate who has collective guilt, and therefore who deserves punishment. The “left” can disavow, comply with transphobic legislation, and they will still be guilty and still deserve harm.

Swathes of Twitter’s source code leaked online months ago on GitHub, The New York Times reports, allowing practically anybody to get a detailed glimpse at the Elon Musk-owned company’s underlying code.

It’s still unclear how long the source code was available for download, but according to the NYT, GitHub took it down the day after Twitter sent out a copyright infringement notice.

The news has clearly ruffled some feathers at Twitter. According to a Friday court filing, the social media company is demanding that GitHub singles out the individual responsible for leaking the code.

But given the fact that Musk has repeatedly promised — and failed — to make Twitter “open source,” that rage seems puzzling. More than a month ago, for instance, Musk promised the algorithm would be “made open source next week,” though he never made good on that commitment. After his takeover late last year, Musk also fired the company’s entire team dedicated to making the company’s algorithms more transparent.

Actually they can, provided you can get Sinemanchin in on it.

In the United States Senate, the nuclear option is a parliamentary procedure that allows the Senate to override a standing rule by a simple majority, avoiding the two-thirds supermajority normally required to invoke cloture on a resolution to amend Senate rules.

The nuclear option can be invoked by a senator raising a point of order that contravenes a standing rule. The presiding officer would then overrule the point of order based on Senate rules and precedents; this ruling would then be appealed and overturned by a simple majority vote (or a tie vote), establishing a new precedent. The nuclear option is made possible by the principle in Senate procedure that appeals from rulings of the chair on points of order relating to nondebatable questions are themselves nondebatable. Since cloture is a nondebatable question, the appeal is decided without debate. This obviates the usual requirement for a two-thirds majority to invoke cloture on a resolution amending the standing rules

Nvidia has both been the benefactor and victim of cryptocurrencies’ boom/bust cycle. When crypto was soaring in value, so was Nvidia’s share price. When crypto crashed, often Nvidia’s share price dropped with it. The company makes a product that was, for a long while, crucial to the operation of most of the world’s largest cryptocurrencies outside of bitcoin, and that’s been both a blessing and a curse.

Nvidia and crypto is a love/hate relationship. When the going was good, Nvidia would happily create entire product lines for the sole purpose of running algorithms to ‘mine’ cryptocurrency, known as CMP or Cryptocurrency Mining Processor(opens in new tab). However, when crypto crashed, which it has a tendency to do, Nvidia would often be lumped with excess inventory(opens in new tab) of graphics cards and finding new ways to sell them.

Clearly Nvidia is in the hate stage of its relationship right now, as per recent comments to The Guardian(opens in new tab) by Nvidia’s CTO on the value of cryptocurrency to society.

“All this crypto stuff, it needed parallel processing, and [Nvidia] is the best, so people just programmed it to use for this purpose. They bought a lot of stuff, and then eventually it collapsed, because it doesn’t bring anything useful for society. AI does,” Nvidia CTO Michael Kagan said.

It’s no surprise that Nvidia is keen to position itself as the pre-eminent AI company, but I hadn’t expected the company to outright slam cryptocurrency in the process. Kagan’s comments touch on a debate that’s been raging for a while, however, and that’s whether cryptocurrency is a worthy alternative to fiat money or moreso a tool for generating profit. So far, we’ve seen a lot of examples of the latter, and not so many proving the former.

Nvidia kicks crypto to the curb: ‘doesn’t bring anything useful for society. AI does’ (PC Gamer)

Have the Dems been pulled into a much more anti-Russian stance than we would have preferred? Yes.

Was it their fault? No.

The alternative, if we and NATO had remained passive would have been that the Orcs would have taken Ukraine, Transnistria, and Moldova, and we would have seen direct threats to the Balkans.

The use of Ukraine as a proxy, I will agree, is as cynical as a policy can be. But we have very few other options. Russia, despite having a GDP the size of Texas, is the 2nd largest nuclear power on our planet.

Supporting Ukraine is, given the alternatives, an absolute bargain in containing Russian expansionism, and anyone who says otherwise is not an American Patriot. They are Putin Apologists.

From the sounds of the video clip in the story, they were about to get their asses beat when they got found out.

For trying to scam a $28,000 prize, they’ve lost several times that in having their $100,000(!) boat seized (which will no doubt be put up for auction by the state to defray prosecution costs), in addition to their own legal and court costs, to stay out of prison.

re: #233 Targetpractice

My only experience with T-54/55’s was in training at Ft. Bragg. We were supposed to get used to the idea that an enemy tank could close assault and overrun our position. So we were told to get into a foxhole and a T-54/55 drove over the foxhole.

What I remember was how small the tank was. How much diesel smoke it put out. And how much it vibrated, rattled, and generally looked utterly decrepit.

As for the exercise, the foxholes were pre-dug and lined with concrete pipe. And the tank path was paved. Further, the treads stayed on the pavement outside the foxholes.

As the foxholes had obviously been used multiple times, I was not worried about being squished. Many armies require their trainees to dig their own foxholes within a certain time limit before the tanks run over them.

As for the deployment of the T-54/55s some analysts think that the Russians are running out of artillery and artillery ammunition and are hoping to use them as a stopgap for artillery replacement. Certainly, in Iraq 30 years ago, T-54/55’s did not last very long or achieve much in combat against the Coalition forces.

If I find some of the analyst comments, I will post the later.

Yeah, that’s the general consensus I’ve seen as well, though there’s also been suggestions that the Russians may be so desperate that they might be resorting to just bum-rushing AFU infantry operating in absence of armoured support with dozens of otherwise obsolete tanks in the belief that the tanks being immune to small arms fire will allow them to act as mobile bunkers. That even if the main guns are useless due to an absence of sufficient 100mm shells in supply, there should be plentiful ammo for the coax guns to mow down or at least suppress opposing infantry long enough for their own to close the distance and turn it into a close quarters skirmish.

From the NBC News article

Discord’s community guidelines prohibit “the coordination, participation, or encouragement of sexual harassment,” including “unwanted sexualization.” NBC News has reviewed other Discord communities devoted to creating sexually explicit deepfake images through an AI development method known as Stable Diffusion, one of which featured nonconsensual imagery of celebrities and was shut down after NBC News asked for comment.

In a statement, Discord said it expressly prohibits “the promotion or sharing of non-consensual deepfakes.”

“Our Safety Team takes action when we become aware of this content, including removing content, banning users, and shutting down servers,” the statement said.

And maybe to encourage more narcissists and sociopaths like Trump to participate in processes critical to the functioning and survival of our society.

There was the Birch Church that did the Jesus Only Loves Us shit and it was isolated.

Sadly the Religious Right infected all the churches and “Jesus Loves You” became at first “Jesus Hates Gays” and then “Jesus Hates Liberals, Colored folks, The Poor, Jews, Muslims and LGBTQs” along with everyone else who wasn’t a Republican. I saw how some churches began to support George Wallace in 1968 and they just accelerated with the hate after that.

Now megachurches reciting Republican propaganda are everywhere.

I blame the shooter first for the shooting, and access to guns as the thing we need to fix. As for the police possible stopping it, it’s more of a “maybe if they had acted on information faster, and hopefully they can fix that” thing. But yeah, at least the cops didn’t stand at the doors. I’m quite irritated about this. Doesn’t the Kennedy Center get a significant amount of public funding? Isn’t their entire mission statement about making the arts available to the general public? It’s not right. YouTube has some excerpts, but not the entire ceremony and all the speeches.

Her 22 years in Scientology’s hardcore elite unit, the Sea Organization, has left her with what her therapist has diagnosed as PTSD, she explains. And a court ruling on March 15 had left her trembling as those years of trauma were stirred up again.

“I was like, am I on another planet? Is this really correct? The court is OK with me having to go back to the place where I literally had to escape in the trunk of a car to get out?”

In November 2016, Haney, who worked casting Scientology’s internal films, crawled into the trunk of an actor’s car during a film shoot in order to get away from Scientology’s secretive international management compound “Gold Base” near Hemet, California. Her unusual escape became the subject of the premiere episode of Leah Remini’s third season of Scientology and the Aftermath, which aired on A&E in 2018.

I stand corrected. While the victim of Scientology is in Florida, the judge forcing her into arbitration using Scientology’s rules is a Los Angeles judge.

That judge says “a contract’s a contract” (how very libertarian of her), and a literal billion-year contract with an enforced arbitration clause is just too bad for her.

In the face of a fierce headwind and an annoyingly misty rain, par is more than acceptable. Likely to see scores all over the place.

Took MrsTarH’s vehicle for routine service at a car care center and discovered an issue with the auxiliary battery/alarm system. Upon further deep dive, this seems like a problem with 2010-2018 Volvos. If I lock the doors, the flashing lights come on after about 10 minutes. Thankfully, the alarm itself does not go off. Have an appointment with the local Volvo dealer but not until Wednesday next week. Bleh.

I’ve seen this lie pop up from both Republicans and Libertarians.

Kaiser Family Foundation used data from IMHE and the New England Journal of Medicine to compile their statistics. KFF noted in the study that data is not available for 0-17, so the only data they have is 0-19. They then compared the data with other nations’ statistics from 0-19.

The gun pedants are arguing 18 and 19 aren’t children!!!one!!121!!3£eleventy!!1!

Other pedants are arguing they can’t find any of this data at the CDC Website so KFF must be pushing a political agenda. (The CDC was blocked from compiling gun statistics by the Dickey Amendment, which they conveniently leave out as often as they leave out the Southern Strategy when arguing about racism.)

Basically it’s the usual bad-faith sealioning tactic to try to get people to argue about the statistics, because if you’re doing that you’re not talking about their murderous ideology.

Even if it was true “KFF cooked the books by including eighteen and nineteen year olds” so what? It’s still a damn tragedy.

This is the same as the meme of four trans people allegedly involved in mass shootings. Even if the meme is true (it’s not), that ignores the thousands which were cis.

No True Christian (tm) would shoot up a Christian school, therefore the shooter is an atheist (they can’t blame it on scary Muslims but we’re always up as a convenient scapegoat too).

The list goes on. Then there’s the Christian Persecution Olympics (tm)

I no longer care if conservatives want to die suiciding by a horrible lung-destroying disease.

I did my part at the start of the vaccination programme encouraging everyone in my village to get vaccinated. Everyone who could is now.

After two friggin’ years of idiot small-l libertarians saying “you can’t tell me what to do,” I’m fine with them dying by suicide if that’s what they want to do. Just stay away from me.

But it’s not enough to troll people who are vaccinated while claiming “my body my choice.” If they really believed that, they also wouldn’t harass people who wear masks.

While the outcome of the midterm elections probably didn’t hinge on vaccination rates between Democrats and Republicans, in lots of local races around the country decided by only a few votes they may have; the most prominent being the Arizona governor’s race. That race’s close call is smaller than the number of Republicans versus Democrats who died in Arizona from Covid-19.

In CO-3, Rep. Lauren Bobert was only reëlected by a little over five hundred votes. Republicans are dying at a greater rate on the western slope than Democrats. That district may well flip anyway, but Republican intransigence over vaccines won’t help them.

No arrests after Geauga County church set to host drag performance hit with Molotov cocktail (Cleveland Plain Dealer, yesterday)

CLEVELAND, Ohio - No arrests have been made after someone threw a Molotov cocktail at a church set to host a Drag Queen Story Hour.

Little else is known about the incident at the Community Church of Chesterland or the police response because Chester Township officials, in an apparent violation of Ohio law and a recent Ohio Supreme Court case, refused to release the full police report.

The incident happened about a week before a planned brunch and story hour sponsored by the church. The Proud Boys, an all-male, neo-fascist organization, last week circulated notices encouraging protests at the sold-out drag brunch that’s set for Saturday at Element 41 in Chardon.

FBI spokeswoman Susan Licate would not say if the FBI is investigating the incident, saying in a statement that the agency is “aware of the incident and takes allegations of federal law violations seriously.”

WILC-TV (Richmond, ABC), yesterday

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Chesterfield County judge has set a new deadline for prosecutors in the solicitation of prostitution case against Virginia Beach Pastor John Blanchard.

The Rock Church International pastor was arrested in Oct. 2021 during an undercover sex sting by the Chesterfield County Police Department. Sixteen other men were also arrested on similar charges, after detectives posed as underage prostitutes in online advertisements, and communicated with suspects who responded, setting a place to meet for sexual services.

While the majority of the 16 other cases were prosecuted, in Oct. 2022, the Chesterfield County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office made the decision to nolle pros, or drop, the charges against Pastor Blanchard, citing a “lack of evidence.” Shortly after that decision, however, text messages and other records of Blanchard’s arrest were released, having been obtained by a legal information request filed by Virginia Beach Del. Tim Anderson, an attorney himself.

They were still enamored with the myth of armed virtuous citizens fending off those ‘engines of despotism’ while ignoring that the Continental Army did 90% of the work.

You can call it the No True Scotsman or whatever fallacy you like, but at the end of the day, I’d prefer to be left out of the conversation when it comes to being lumped in with the likes of these shitheads. Sorry.

Just as:

Women must be always on guard because “not all men” are rapist shithead, but they can’t tell which ones are, and the #MeToo movement was endlessly trolled on Twitter by “not all men are shitheads.” All of this is sea lioning.

Black people must always be on guard because police/white people “aren’t all racists,” but they can’t tell which ones are …

LGBT+ people/atheists/Jews/Muslims must always be on guard because Christians “aren’t all paedophiles/rapists/murderers” but they can’t tell which ones are …

It is not up to the oppressed to police the majority.
That is the majority’s job. An ally calls out the bigots every time they bigot.

“Straight Pride” is a thing (they even have a flag of black and white stripes, very much in keeping with how conservative thinking works, see that Volvo post above on Pride flags).

Whether they are loud or not, Christians, Muslims, and Hindus routinely call for murdering LGBT+ and atheist people.

My beef isn’t against police, Christians, &c. My beef is against bigots. Christianity is politics in our nation, so when it strays into racism, misogyny, hate, murder, bombing women’s clinics in the name of God, child rape, &c I will point it out. It is not my job to fix their ideology of rape and murder.

I noted above that a Christian church was firebombed by Christians for hosting a Drag Queen Story Hour by other Christians (while in the same county the paedophilic pastor of another church is still in the pulpit after being charged with child rape). That is not the problem of non-Christians.

That got no upvotes here. As Stonekettle says, “Don’t look away.” Christianity claims its moral high ground comes directly from God. Yet they cover up, lie, misdirect, and defend criminals and bigots within their ranks, either directly or “not all men Christians.”

All people deserve respect, unless they show themselves unworthy of it. No ideology deserves respect, unless it is shown to be true (or at least not hypocritical).

Don’t just call them out as “not true Christians (tm).” Quit supporting them (cough money in baskets). Call them out, every time they bigot or crime. Do not accept others defining your faith for you, because we will listen to those who put themselves as the representatives of their faith.

Hey, where did the sun come from? I thought I stuffed it in a closet last night. I probably should get to bed.

It took me a long time to discover Christians who just quietly live their faith for the very reason that they were not in my face about it like the Campus Crusade for Christ yahoos I used to slam doors on in college.

re: #243 ckkatz

Or simply as an artillery supplement if they have stocks of 100mm HE ammo and not much other use for them.

Plenty of footage from WW2 of the Allies using Sherman tanks for artillery support. Including building ramps for them so that they could get more elevation (and range) for the 75mm gun.

Just like the French used WW1-vintage Renault tanks in WW2 simply as mobile pillboxes/machine-gun emplacements.

Seen a number of “brew ups” on T-62 tanks in Ukraine now a lot like what you describe, with fire shooting out the hatches and sometimes out the gun muzzle as well. The early Soviet tanks don’t do the turret toss because there wasn’t an automatic loader carousel in the turret, but they also didn’t have blow out protections like modern NATO tanks to keep ammo cook offs away from the crew. One particularly disturbing video a couple weeks ago showed a Russian T-62 getting smacked by a Javelin while advancing across a field. Total ammo cook off, fire shooting out every hatch etc. Crew incinerated. The engine compartment was still intact though, and the tank kept trundling along as a grim Flying Dutchman with a crew of charred corpses.

Why didn’t Gov. Beshear veto the bill? He didn’t veto HB547 either, which allows teachers and government workers to proselytise (and be real, that only applies to Christians) to captive audiences and co-workers without repercussions.

I’m beginning to wonder if Mr. Beshear is paying attention to what’s going on here.

Even if those vetoes could be overriden in the state legislature, make them own that. Put them on record saying its okay for a teacher to proselytise to your children, regardless of your own faith. Five weeks ago:

An Oregon court dealt a blow to the state’s “second amendment sanctuary” movement, deciding on Wednesday that local governments cannot ban police from enforcing certain gun laws in a ruling that could hold national ramifications for anti-gun control efforts.

At the center of the lawsuit was a 2020 measure passed in Columbia county, a conservative area in the Democratic state, that argued state and federal gun laws did not apply in the county and banned local officials from enforcing the regulations. The rural region was one of some 1,200 in the US, from Virginia to New Mexico to Florida, to pass a second amendment sanctuary resolution.

The Oregon state court of appeals ruled the law, which included fines for officials who enforce most federal and state gun laws, violated a law granting the state the authority to regulate firearms. The ordinance would effectively “create a ‘patchwork quilt’ of firearms laws in Oregon”, the court found.

[…]

I hope it has national ramifications.

One of the benefits of the filibuster of the two anti-LGBT+ bills in my state right now is that the Rethugs don’t get to work on the bills they really want. Those would be the six-week abortion ban bill, and the “guns everywhere,, no permits required” bill (even in your house from some gun nut who wants to carry conceded or openly in front of your children).

Zero bills have been passed here since the start of the ninety-day legislative session. It is two-thirds over. They’re going to have to decide if they want their Christian culture-war anti-LGBT+/drag bills, or their real goals soon.

While the anti-abortion movement by Protestants started as a backlash to desegregation of schools, that is two generations ago. Today’s Protestants truly believe their anti-abortion stance is God’s will (and be real, there is no non-religious case for such bills).

While there are churches which support women’s healthcare decisions they are in the distinct minority. Republicans can count votes in their base too, and know that regardless of whatever shitty position they take which directly hurts one of their own voters, that voter is programmed to pull the lever for (R).

That’s the theory. They’re all in favor of local control, except in places where Democrats have local control. To that end, the “constitutional sheriff” movement - and others like it - seek to place the ultimate authority of the law in the hands of local officials as much as possible, supposedly to pre-empt any attempts by federal or state governments to enforce the Supremacy Clause. The anti-democratic partisans on the right want to return us to the days of the Articles of Confederation.

My county was the first in Nebraska to adopt a “II Amendment Sanctuary” resolution, which Governor (now Senator) Ricketts praised.

At the time, I was unaware the county commission put the item on its emergency agenda, or I would have been all over that meeting protesting.

It’s not like this is already an open-carry state.

Here the county resolution was a bunch of wanking for the masses; it didn’t change anything about our laws. Our sheriff actually opposed the resolution, but it is non-binding so the county commission can’t force the sheriff to enforce it against a legitimate federal or state investigation. (On a side note the sheriff is the only Republican I’ve ever voted for. He is a good person, and since no Democrat ran against him it didn’t matter that much.)

Good to see an example of you not lumping a person into a group.

I usually turn in blank ballots except for federal office. I didn’t vote for any of the Republicans in the midterms for village board, county commission, or school board. (On a side note, our school board is now Democrats 4-1 Republicans, after the former Republican members were outed by the regional newspaper for diverting school funding for private projects or outright theft.) Next county over (Banner), the county clerk was outed using a court room for a sexual tryst with a county commissioner. She and the commissioner were reëlected because they have the magic R beside their name. The assistant clerk was fired though (hired position) because she discovered it and went to the regional newspaper. They were both forgiven for their “peccadillo” by a local pastor testifying at their county commission meeting.

Ever since my first election in 1980, I have lumped Republicans into the same group. My county sheriff is in fact the only Republican I’ve ever voted for.

It isn’t just the politicians though: Every person who looks at someone like former president Donald Trump, Rep. Jim Jordan, Sen. The voters are the ones who elect these trash politicians: If the voters demanded Republicans hold any moral standard at all, their policitians would move more to the centre. Politicians tailor their policies to reflect the views of their base; the GOP base is bigoted, racist, Christian nationalist and fascist. The base creates the politician and then the politician changes the rules to exclude voters who don’t share these views — it’s a vicious toxic cycle.

The judge in Oregon tried to fix that. We’ll see if it takes.

It’s a constant friction between states and counties or cities when one is more liberal or conservative than the other.

The smaller entity tries to undo or prevent the enforcement of a law made by the larger by either declaring it void (which generally doesn’t get far in the courts) or by stating that their local officials and law enforcement are not to cooperative in enforcing said laws (which I think has generally gotten farther.)

And the “2nd Amendment Sanctuary” bills are a direct riff on the “Sanctuary City” bills some cities have to protect immigrants, etc.

And then it also starts to abut the “sovereign citizen” BS as mentioned in other comments.

Human hands are considered by many artists as among the trickiest things to draw, and early AI image makers from Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and OpenAI’s Dall-E showed that generative artificial intelligence also struggled.

It meant that otherwise convincing images of poltical figures like Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron could be recognised as fake just by looking at the hands.

“Just a headsup - Midjourney’s AI can now do hands correctly,” said video game artist Del Walker.

“Be extra critical of any political imagery, especially photography, you see online that is trying to incite a reaction.”

AI has finally figured out how to draw hands - removing the one easy way to identify deepfake images (The Independent)

I think he sees what I see. Little or nil pushback from within the Christian communities getting published stating that these things are wrong.

Which might be the media - but the media loves publishing conflict and dirty laundry being aired.

Which leads to one starting to question what the rank-and-file really think? They care but have been trained or conditioned to not question their leaders? They agree with their leaders? They think the debate should be held solely within the Christian community and everyone else should butt out?

You can deal with people on an individual basis. And many of them are fine people with a good sense of empathy. However, identity with a community or group carries with it a dual responsibility of where your actions (or inactions) and words reflect on the group. And the group’s actions and words reflect upon you since you’ve have voluntarily joined and maintained membership in said group as a adult.

And I’d say religions should be held to higher standards since they also are generally claiming higher moral ground* based upon their religious dogma.

I mean, yes, but also no. Honesty is refreshing, but that’s a shitty truth to tell.

JRRT completely plagiarized “Where is the horse and the rider?” from Norse verse.

Broke my heart when I saw that.

Ja, richtig.

Of course they don’t say that - they WANT this. They want people scared. They want public education destroyed and if, occasionally, some of their own get killed, well, friendly fire happens in war.

No, to them destroying peoples lives for power and indoctrination is the purpose and mass shootings are just one of the GOFP’s tools to do that.

TBH, to even a minor-league Tolkienophile (like yrs. truly), there is enough in Amazon’s RoP to complain about without tossing in those gratuitous whines about “race” and “gender”. To anyone who has even a passing familiarity with the Hobbit/LOTR/Silmarillion canon, Amazon’s series has enough narrative flaws to make the inclusion of a Puerto Rican Elf in the cast a minor issue indeed.

That said, I will have to admit I DID like the RoP series. It may not have been proper Tolkien, but it was good TV….

That’s why they’ll have to destroy this shooter—it was not a public school. Big, though, public in a sense.

re: #380 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

It isn’t just the politicians though: Every person who looks at someone like former president Donald Trump, Rep. Jim Jordan, Sen. Mitch McConnell, &c and says “that’s the person who should represent me” deserves scorn. The voters are the ones who elect these trash politicians: If the voters demanded Republicans hold any moral standard at all, their policitians would move more to the centre. They attack veterans, cops, and the FBI. The voters want this. Thus I hold the entire group of GOP voters in scorn.

That’s where I’m at these days. I get yelled at a lot when the subject comes up with friends and family because despite generally voting Democratic, they’re hopelessly conditioned to go “Both sides”.

Forget even trying to get through to the few never-Trumpers I know. It’s all “I’m voting for his business smarts, not his bigotry. I don’t support that.” Literally “I’m responsible for putting the bigot in office, therefore you cannot hold me responsible for any bigotry Trump engages in.”

I’m probably in the DGAF old man phase of my life, but I’m tired of getting yelled at for not tolerating intolerance.

I’m seeing serious conjecture that conservatives may move to ban trans ppl from owing firearms as “mentally deficient”.

But they will reserve the right to armed pogroms as needed, natch.

Oh, so they’re in favor of limiting gun ownership for mentally ill individuals? Well, this is quite a development.
