The Beths Unplugged: Tiny Desk Concert

If you squint hard enough at the paper in front of Elizabeth Stokes, you’ll find an encouraging note she wrote to herself: Breathe. Relax. Smile. (followed by a hand-drawn smiley face, of course). We get it: The Tiny Desk is filmed in broad daylight, at eye level, in front of NPR employees and, eventually, is released to “the inside of your computer.” A small reminder helps.

The thing about The Beths, however, is that you can hear the support and camaraderie of its four members throughout the band’s fuzzy-yet-sparkling indie pop — not just in how they dryly joke with each other but in how their arrangements uplift one another. Take, for instance, “Expert in a Dying Field” (from, as Stokes tells us, the album Expert in a Dying Field) when the full-band harmony kicks in to repeat and emphasize Stokes’ existential question about the changing of times. Or on “Jump Rope Gazers” (from, as Stokes again tells us, the album Jump Rope Gazers) as she sheepishly but charmingly declares, “I think I love you” to a special someone, and Benjamin Sinclair’s clarinet curlicues act as the mirrored response.

The New Zealanders also offer quieter versions of “Out of Sight” and “When You Know You Know.” The former, in particular, is transformed from a loud, shoegazing dream to Burt Bacharach-ian soft rock, immediately becoming my new favorite Beths song; it happens to close with a perfect summation of the band’s empathetic way of being: “I keep a flame burning inside / If you need to bum a light.”

After the Senate overrides the Governor’s veto of the anti-trans bill, it will go to the House for their override vote.

A thought that just floated through my head: The only reason our society works the way it does is because there are certain groups within that society that have been deemed expendable and exploitable by those in power.

Think about it: What happens if organizations suddenly never have access to people they can overwork, underpay and generally take advantage of? The system falls apart.

Leak reveals Fox News CEO raged at host for fact checking Trump: ‘This has to stop’

rawstory.com

Matt Gertz, a senior fellow at left-wing media watchdog Media Matters for America, has posted some photographs on Twitter of a leaked slideshow deck that Dominion Voting Systems is using in its defamation lawsuit against Fox News.

Among other things, the deck features an email from Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott in which she berated host Eric Shawn for fact checking former President Donald Trump’s false claims about Democrats using “massive dumps of votes” to cheat in the 2020 presidential election.

Shortly after Shawn shot down this claim on air, Scott sent out an angry email to Fox News executive Meade Cooper complaining that hosts such as Shawn were infuriating their viewers by providing context to Trump’s false claims about election fraud.

“This has to stop now,” she demanded. “This is bad business and there clearly is a lack of understanding what is happening in these shows. The audience is furious and we are just feeding them material. Bad for business.”

In its lawsuit, Dominion has repeatedly shown that Fox News aired claims about Dominion’s machines purportedly rigging the election for President Joe Biden that it knew to be false.

Earlier messages released by Dominion show that Scott also said that Fox News reporters who fact check Trump’s false statements “don’t understand our audience.”

Florida bill would instantly ban books based on a single objection from one resident

As Greg Sargent noted in The Washington Post on Wednesday, a new bill advancing in the legislature with DeSantis’ support could formally require schools to ban any book, pending review, if even a single parent complains about it.

washingtonpost.com

“The provision is buried in a bill that’s already received attention for another reason: It would expand the state’s ‘don’t say gay’ law prohibiting classroom discussion of sex and gender up to high school — well beyond the initial goal of limiting discussion only through third grade,” wrote Sargent. “That’s bad, but the book-banning provision, which has attracted far less attention, makes it worse. That part of the bill mandates that instructional material facing objection in public schools through 12th grade for depicting ‘sexual’ or ‘pornographic’ conduct be ‘unavailable to students until the objection is resolved.’”

Trump’s lone protestor is a complete psycho.

NEW YORK — A Donald Trump supporter protesting the Manhattan district attorney’s probe of the former president pulled a knife on a family with two small children Tuesday outside Manhattan Criminal Court, according to a court official.

The man and woman with two children in strollers accidentally bumped into the Trump supporter while crossing the intersection of Hogan Place and Centre Street just after 4:00 p.m., three bystanders told POLITICO. The female protester, who held a sign that read “I support Trump, do you?” began arguing with the couple before she pulled out a blade approximately 6 inches long and waved it at the family, according to the eye-witnesses.

“Angelica Rucker pulled a knife from her right side belt hip area and began menacing one of the complainants with the knife as the verbal confrontation pursued,” a court spokesperson said.

Court officers, who were standing outside the building, rushed over, pulled out their guns and ordered the woman to drop the knife, the bystanders said. She was arrested without incident.

No one was injured. Rucker, who could not immediately be reached for comment, was placed in custody and charges are pending, according to a court spokesperson.

“The court officers were standing on the corner and within 20 seconds they were here and she had dropped the knife,” said one bystander who could not be named because of his job. “The woman yelled, ‘Knife, knife’ and the court officers were on the Trump-supporter like Voltron,” the bystander said.

OT. Many fans of the X-files are currently blowing a gasket because of this:

Apparently, they think this means Mulder and Scully will be black, Skinner will be bisexual and the Cigarette Smoking Man will be transgender.

Never mind that:

1. Nothing is official yet. Coogler hasn’t signed anything.
2. The original X-Files show was extremely homogenous. There was only one major black supporting character, and he was killed off after a few seasons.
3. I’m confident they’d develop new characters as opposed to casting black twentysomethings as Mulder and Scully.
4. The world has changed a lot in 30 years (The X-files debuted in 1993)

Coogler is best known for having directed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Personally, I think it’s stupid to pass judgment on something that doesn’t even exist yet. I’m a big X-Files fan myself and I would certainly give any reboot a try.

Don’t be surprised though, since the “D” word was mentioned, if this one seeps into the RWNJ talking points soon.

The only possible restraint on that nonsense from the GOP side will come from that fraction of the GOP donor class that are just cynically exploiting the GOP rubes (as opposed to being true believers themselves). The House GOP will fuck shit up unless they get orders from on high to behave.

This idiot probably thought of himself as a very smart person.

A Lehigh County man is accused of embezzling $2.4 million from a Bensalem-based gaming company over seven years.

On Monday, Michael Bull, 47, of Emmaus, was arraigned on charges alleging he embezzled the funds from KGM Gaming LLC since 2015.

Bull is charged with dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity, theft by deception, theft, receiving stolen property, identity theft and related offenses. He is free on 10% of $500,000 bail.

The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office and Bensalem police said in a news release that Bull, who was hired as the company’s accountant in 2014, began issuing himself checks within a year.

Bensalem Detective Stephen Clark served search warrants on Citizens Bank to get Bull’s banking records, which showed Bull issued himself 288 checks, totaling $2,404,960, officials said.

Bull turned himself in Monday.

“At this point in time we’re investigating the allegations against Mr. Bull,” his attorney Matthew Quigg said Monday. “And we’ll have more comment at a future date.”

A KGM Gaming spokesperson said the company had no further comment when reached Monday afternoon.

KGM Gaming, on Samuel Drive, is a supplier of cabinet housings for slot machines and furniture for casinos. The company recently installed software that detects suspicious transactions.

I’ve mentioned this before: my county in NJ has about 523,000+ people. I’m across the river from Philly, which is 1.5 million.

Combined, we have a total population greater than the bottom 12 states. Philly alone beats out the bottom 10. And I’m not even counting the other two NJ counties and the four PA counties that make up the greater Philly metro area.

re: #81 Jay C

To me, the most interesting stat is that NYC is more populous than 38 states? IOW, three-quarters of the total????

And we still only get two Senators??

The SF Bay area has a similar population to NYC, and we only share in California’s two senators, just like you only share in New York’s 2 senators.

Equality of states in the Senate was theoretically a nice way for ensuring viewpoint equality, and preventing tyranny of the majority, but really just a compromise to get the smaller states to actually join the constitution. And to be frank, it’s really overrated.

Let’s not forget that it brought us to a @#$@# civil war because the need to balance slave and free states in the Senate created compromises that kept tensions simmering until the Supreme Court decided to bring it to a full boil with Dred Scott.

And now, it’s become tyranny of the minority.

But since we can’t eliminate that, we need to move more of the powers of the Senate to the House. How about having appointments that won’t pass the Senate be approvable by a small Super-majority of the house? Or forcing the Senate to take up certain items (Cabinet Members, Ambassadors, Court nominations, and military Promotions) for a vote.

Or better yet and also need to move to a combination of Party List, and geographically based multi-member districts, so we can have account for geographical diversity, ideological and viewpoint diversity, while also representing the nation as a whole.

I’m sure the Germans or German residents here

NE1hbFFlazE3Q3B1RDdIcUZUcmJKdz09OjrVHuASVmujmIPKbcpaFbVI

can tell us the flaws of Germany’s system. Obviously, it gives too much control to party leadership to determine ordering of lists.

re: #93 Mattand

I’ve mentioned this before: my county in NJ has about 523,000+ people. I’m across the river from Philly, which is 1.5 million.

Combined, we have a total population greater than the bottom 12 states. Philly alone beats out the bottom 10. And I’m not even counting the other two NJ counties and the four PA counties that make up the greater Philly metro area.

37 Nebraska 1,967,923
38 Idaho 1,939,033
39 West Virginia 1,775,156
40 Hawaii 1,440,196
41 New Hampshire 1,395,231
42 Maine 1,385,340
43 Montana 1,122,867
44 Rhode Island 1,093,734
45 Delaware 1,018,396
46 South Dakota 909,824
47 North Dakota 779,261
48 Alaska 02000 733,583
49 District of Columbia 671,803
50 Vermont 647,064
51 Wyoming 581,381

Damn! So my borough alone (Manhattan, pop. ~ 1.7MM) is more populous than 12 States???

Ga. Tech head football coach Brent Key broke down talking about the Nashville school shooting.

“As long as people sit up there and bicker and argue, more and more kids are going to die…Something’s got to change. Everybody, please do something.”

I know how this sounds, and I apologize in advance because it sounds like Key is sincere, but a plea blaming both sides for gun violence is not facing up to the problem, regardless of how many tears are delivered with it.

There is one party, and one party alone, standing in the way of rational gun control, and that’s Republicans. No one else. You fix this by voting out Republicans. Full stop.

Want kids to stop getting murdered in their classrooms? Vote Democratic.

And while I don’t know the guy, I’d bet my drawing hand that if given a choice between kids dying and voting Democratic, Key probably will keep voting Republican. Because blaming both sides is, at best, is someone in denial about how fucked the GOP has been the last 30 years regarding guns.

California had more people vote Republican in 2020 than who live in a bunch of states - combined.

GOPers love to tout that they represent more states, but that’s not people. Open space and cattle aren’t people and don’t vote. Where people live is where they vote, and more people live in places like NYC or CA’s Silicon Valley and LA and San Diego than they do in farm country where the population density is low.

NJ is most densely populated state, and even then there are low density areas like the Skylands or Shore areas.

This cannot be repeated enough. I was literally thinking this morning about how the last two Republican presidents needed the Electoral College to get them over the finish line. Maddow likes to point out that when people are not prevented from voting, Democrats generally win.

A Republican President has only won the popular vote once since 1992. So all of those big red states don’t mean jack shit in the long run.

NJ is most densely populated state, and even then there are low density areas like the Skylands or Shore areas.

You get about 10 miles east of where I’m at and you start to hit the Pine Barrens. The population drops off pretty quickly.

Grew up in Brooklyn, a place with 2+ million people living, and it’s a fraction of all of NYC residents. Even then, there are denser and less dense parts of the borough based on zoning and what was built. There are places where it’s nothing but single family homes, while other areas are nothing but apartment buildings of various heights.

Hoboken has an even higher population density. Union City NJ has even higher density than that.

My NJ community is lower density than Brooklyn on average.

Then parents need to go in and ask for the Bible to be banned, any religious books, any creationist shit, any garbage that promotes traditional sex roles, etc. etc. If they’re going to play that game, then let’s tangle them up.

A thought that just floated through my head: The only reason our society works the way it does is because there are certain groups within that society that have been deemed expendable and exploitable by those in power.

Think about it: What happens if organizations suddenly never have access to people they can overwork, underpay and generally take advantage of? The system falls apart.

Entire industries are built on the business model of an endless supply of cheap, easily exploited workers: agriculture, food processing, food service, hospitality & domestic service, health and geriatric care, construction, gardening, landscaping, car washes…without them, the economy would experience a serious upheaval.

That’s probably a big part of why these executives want to torture their minions with required office attendance and commutes etc. — to reinforce the point that the minions are just working stiffs.

Musk is the purest example, but it’s a very common attitude.

If you are wondering why Rand Paul is trending again:

One of his staffers got stabbed in an attack, and he voted no on the Tik Tok ban. He’s always reliably libertarian on things that do not matter while being authoritarian on questions that do (e.g. border wall, abortion, etc.)

30 years ago, my impression was that glibertarians were reliably pro choice. When and why did they suddenly morph into anti-choice handmaid supporting religious fanatics?

Latest Colorado Drought Monitor map. West of the Continental Divide and the northern Front Range urban corridor are drought free at the moment, and there’s more moisture in the forecast. Though the southern Front Range urban corridor and eastern plains are still very dry, exceptionally so at the state’s far eastern corners.

Well…

The Barricade situation on Richmond Highway is still happening.

The woman, named as Brittany Copeland is still sitting along the closed US 1 highway. She apparently is communicating with the Police negotiator.

Lieutenant James Curry said that around 11 a.m., another agency called Fairfax County police to the area for a welfare check. While officers were in the area, a woman approached them, saying that she had been abducted and that the suspect had just fled.

The stupid…it burns.

This is the end point of individualism: I am a Horatio Alger story, the system exists to lift me. Proposing that the system should lift everyone is injustice, because everyone is not destined for success.

Not quite eugenics because it’s not about genes, it’s about fate, but it amounts to the same. It’s “The Secret” minus the literal magic.

It’s a very intuitive position to take if you start with the assumption that money is personal virtue, that current success reaches backward and transforms one’s life into a fable of individual achievement: I survived the limb-grinding machine because I am special, it’s wrong to make modern kids not work the limb-grinding machine.

It’s cruel; it’s the proposal that surviving suffering is character and to question the origin of suffering is an obscenity.

Among other things, a “declaration of restrictive covenants” spells out that the district is barred from using the Disney name without the corporation’s approval or “fanciful characters such as Mickey Mouse.”

That declaration is valid until “21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, king of England,” according to the document.
