Truganini - Lyrics

There’s a road train going nowhere
Roads are cut, lines are down
We’ll be staying at the Roma bar
Till that monsoon passes on

The backbone of this country’s broken
The land is cracked and the land is sore
Farmers are hanging on by their fingertips
We cursed and stumbled across that shore
What for?

I hear much support for the monarchy
I hear the Union Jack’s to remain
I see Namatjira in custody
I see Truganini’s in chains

And the world won’t stand still

Blue collar work it don’t get you nowhere
You just go round and round in debt
Somebody’s got you on that treadmill, mate
And I hope you’re not beaten yet

I hear much support for the monarchy
I hear the Union Jack’s to remain
I see Namatjira in custody
I see Truganini’s in chains

I hear much support for the monarchy
I see the Union Jack in flames, let it burn
I see Namatjira with dignity
I see Truganini’s in chains

And the world won’t stand still
And the world won’t stand still
Chains…
And the world won’t stand still
And the world won’t stand still

I currently attend our religious services over streaming, rather than in person, because my knee is still recovering from my accident. Today we all got a message that tonight’s services were being held over zoom from the cantor’s study in his home because he has COVID. Apparently he picked it up last weekend when he got together at his alma mater U of I in Champaign, with a large group of friends from his college days. It’s still active in the community — but so far at much reduced virulence. Total deaths nationwide over the previous week were 1,160 — so closer to the level of a serious flu outbreak and nowhere near a few months ago, let alone at the height of the pandemic. Hopefully the numbers will continue to decline.

What a winter! Closing day for Alta’s 85th season was last Sunday and we exceeded all previous snow records. Not just by a little bit, either. The previous snowfall record was 748 inches, set in the winter of 81/82. We passed that on March 24th and a week later hit 800 inches. This past Monday night, one day after closing for the season, we hit the amazing milestone of 900 inches. It’s been a difficult winter to work at Alta because of all the snow. We had lots of closures and the traffic has been tough. But I wouldn’t have missed it for anything. I love being an Alta photographer and plan to continue working there for as long as I’m physically able.

All the melted snow from the Alta Ski Area drains into the Great Salt Lake, which itself is drying up, so that’ll be a good shot in the arm for that basin. But it’s endorheic, no outflow to the ocean.

Some estimates put Lake Powell’s surface water elevation (downstream from me) at 50 feet higher by June. Which is good, but… Yes we will need probably five or six winters like what we saw this winter in a row to make the Colorado River system water solvent.

Long term, the water situation in the Colorado river is impossible. IIRC the baseline water rights allocations were done using data from an unusually rainy period. So there’s not nearly enough water to go around even in normal (i.e., non-drought) conditions.

The US west will see its own version of the water wars (hopefully in courts instead of with guns, but you never can tell these days).

And yes, I agree that a WWIII driven by climate change, resource issues and mass migrations is inevitable.

The land my brother-in-law has in Craig has an irrigation ditch running from the Yampa along one edge of the property and a few properties further IIRC. It’s a low enough number that it technically has rights for water above the main intake at Steamboat Springs. He, however, never advocated for it to be open since his lower paddocks along the ditch generally have enough moisture for grass. (And one area along a dike along the Yampa gets downright swampy with seepage when the river is up.) And his upper pastures are seeded to grow grass for horses in the local conditions. (Though the droughts are not helpful - but he also was never keeping a lot of horses up there as compared to neighbors who were essentially overgrazing their lands.)

The river bluff also had a spring which keeps a trough full of water for the horses in any case. Plus a few goldfish now and then.

Oh, by the way, an earlier thread had a flight tracker with a Rivet Joint over northern most Norway. A couple of weeks ago when we were in the Uk, we went to Ely to see the Cathedral and to meet up with some old trad musician friends of my wife’s sister and our brother in law.

Forty one years ago I was sent to RAF Mildenhall during the Falklands war where we picked up the RAF’s NATO refueling responsibilities when they sent all of their tankers to Ascension Island to refuel their Vulcan’s on the way to the Falklands and then refuel them on the way back to the UK.

While I was at Mildenhall, I visited Ely on a free day, and noted that it was, on a clear day, on a direct line to the runway at Mildenhall from the west.

So I was not surprised to see a shitpot of re-engined KC-135R’s heading back into Mildenhall. But late in the afternoon, a blocky-headed modified 707 flew overhead, an RC-135W Rivet Joint (Hello, Belafon!), which I refueled back in the 80’s.

The threat of nutcase DeSantis bumper sticker nutjobs pulling out a road rage gun enters my mind every time I set foot out to drive on the roads now. This is no way to live.

Already some friends are openly talking about cashing out the recent real estate boom here and moving out of state to better more sane areas of the country and my wife and I are weighing our own options as we enter a 5 year business lease and have middle school kids.

I have no narcissistic views on Florida’s future without me as liberals, artists and intellectuals move out. But it will do so without us, and it will do so with a growing angrier MAGA demo who elect assholes like DeSantis who have no easy punching bags around close by anymore.

If - and to be fair, that’s a big “if” - the UAF can cut the land bridge between Russia proper and Crimea, and if they can render the Kerch Bridge completely unusable, then they can lay siege to the peninsula until Russia’s position therein becomes untenable and they’re forced to capitulate.

Well, in this week’s county paper, my state senator Steve Erdman (R-Bayard) is railing about the “lawless Democrats” in the Unicameral and the continued filibuster. His claim is the filibuster should only be used for honourable purposes and an atheist (Megan Hunt) has no honour.

Since the column was written earlier in the week, he talks about how critical it is to pass the six-week abortion ban bill (it went down in defeat yesterday). He’s backed off mentioning the anti-trans bill which is the core of the filibuster (Sens. Machaela Cavanaugh, Megan Hunt, and Jen Day said they would withdraw nearly all their amendment bills if Sen. Kauth takes away her hate bill).

Leftie doomsayers in the state are saying defeating the anti-abortion bill was no victory because they’ll just bring it back next session (duh). The doomsayers aren’t willing to let a victory be celebrated as a victory (along with some “feckless Democrats” talk).

For their part, the Nebraska Democratic Socialists celebrated the win.

The Nazi’s deployed something similar in WW2 called the ‘Goliath”. In 1941 the Soviets had a group of dogs trained to run under tanks while carrying a satchel charge and a detonator. Neither of those solutions were apparently very effective.

Fwiw, here is a topography or Crimea. It is quite large at over 10,400 square miles. And even has a mountain range.

Also, reportedly, the original water supply was brought in from North of the Crimea. The Russians are now reportedly building a pipeline to bring in water from Rostov. I do not see that effort surviving for long.

Glad you found a picture!

Supposedly one of the problems with the dogs was that they didn’t distinguish between German tanks and Soviet tanks. Which proved somewhat counter-productive.

Another issue was when Germans saw dogs wearing those satchel charges and a large detonator trigger (big stick) heading for them, they would shoot the poor dog. Something for which the dog had no ability to understand or handle.

Way I heard the story, all the training had been conducted in quiet fields with little more than the encouraging words of the trainers to guide the dogs. So when they were deployed on the battlefield, many of the dogs freaked out due to the loud explosions and ran for safety under the tanks they’d been trained to identify as “targets.”

One thing to bear in mind is that despite switching over to a contract system for the average grunt, most officers still tend to come from politically connected families who want a cushy job for their brats before they graduate on to being part of the kleptocracy. So if these three assholes got off light, it’s probably because their dads are either close to Putin or connected to somebody who is.

In fairness, NYC in the 70’s was an uninhabitable wasteland. The Bronx was on fire, Son of Sam, blackouts, alphabet city was mostly condemned buildings inhabited by squatters, when Ford told the nearly bankrupt city to drop dead they had to drastically slash police and fire departments…

One of the biggest concerns I am hearing about is Ukrainian Air Defense.

The Ukrainians are reportedly running out of the Soviet era missiles (S-300 and Buk).

Additionally, they only have so many launchers. While their launchers were deployed around their big cities, the troops in the battlefield were undefended.

As the Ukrainians prepare to concentrate large numbers of their troops for the upcoming offensive, they are going to have to move the launchers to protect to troops. Which means the cities will be more undefended.

The Russians are likely going to attack the cities to kill lots of civilians in order to try and force to the Ukrainians to return the launchers back to the cities. Leaving the offensive vulnerable. I do not see the Ukrainians doing that.

Thankfully among the systems that the West has been sending them is large numbers of anti-air systems including Patriot which gives them not only the ability to knock down cruise missiles but ballistic missiles as well. The AFU is getting supplied with short and medium range mobile AA units that are giving Russian pilots used to operating with impunity near the frontline a rude awakening.

You cannot bar a person from your personal property or business specifically for carrying a firearm. Certain places are excepted (schools, banks, &c). In practice that part of the bill would probably be unenforceable (both proving you were banned for that reason and property rights in the Constitution).

State polling consistently shows voters in both parties want stricter, not looser, gun regulations. Like other states, Republicans don’t give a fuque what voters want; voters don’t grease the palms. Until Republican voters quit voting for them though, we’re stuck with them.

Even if liberals are upset that conservative Supreme Court Justices are taking massive bribes, they should at least take some solace in the fact that the Justices accepting these bribes have impeccable academic credentials.

Remember how the Marshall and Kavanaugh confirmation hearings were turned into he-said-she said shouting matches? This led to cries from the right that these fellows were being persecuted and that they should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

Five people are dead after being shot in a home by a suspect armed with AR-15 style rifle, police say.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:31 p.m. local time when officials from the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office received a call about harassment in Cleveland, Texas — a small town located about 55 miles north of Houston.

But when authorities arrived at the location they found several victims shot at the property, police said.

Dems across the nation need to understand that Zooey is not an isolated case, she’s the test case. Once the GQP figure out how, they will silence every Dem they can until the only voices heard are their own.

The exact same rhetorical flourish (if you pass this bill you will have blood on your hands) was used by Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh in the Unicameral here. (This was before Rep. Zooey Zepher used it in Montana.) Sen. Cavanaugh got some eye-rolls from the Republicans but no objections about decorum. In the state constitution, a member can only be censured or expelled by 2/3 majority of the forty-nine senators, so Sen. Cavanaugh is safe, other than performative outrage from the GOP.

“Decorum,” as I’m sure you’re aware, is a pretext. Just like it was in Tennessee, Republicans are using false pretenses to expel members they don’t like (Black men, transgendered individuals, etc.) We are in what I’ll call “three-quarters fascism” now, where Republicans are overtly acting anti-democratically, but are still nervous enough about potential consequences that they are couching their actions in parliamentary language. Watch out for when Republicans in some Southern state move to expel all Democrats because, “something something Democrats are unpatriotic and a threat to America.”

More Russian butthurt….

Russia on Saturday promised it would respond harshly to what it said was Poland’s illegal seizure of its embassy school in Warsaw, an act it called a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.

Polish state-run news channel TVP Info had earlier reported that police had showed up outside the Russian embassy school on Kieleckiej street in Warsaw on Saturday morning.

When asked about the incident, a Polish foreign ministry spokesman told Reuters the building housing the embassy school belonged to the Polish state.

Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the Polish authorities had burst onto the embassy school’s grounds with the aim of seizing it.

The Netherlands is cracking down on non-consensual porn.

Popular porn site must delete all amateur videos posted without consent (Ars Technica, April 12, 2023)

An Amsterdam court today ordered one of the largest adult entertainment websites, xHamster, to remove all amateur footage showing recognizable people in the Netherlands who did not consent to be featured on the site.

The ruling followed complaints raised by the Expertise Bureau for Online Child Abuse, known as EOKM, which identified 10 videos where xHamster could not verify it had secured permission from amateur performers to post. The court found that this violated European privacy laws and conflicted with a prior judgment from the Amsterdam court requiring porn sites to receive permission from all performers recognizably featured before posting amateur videos.

This overlooks the fact that Supreme Court confirmation hearings are not criminal charges, nobody was going to face prison time over them, and we were not there to determine their innocence or guilt beyond a reasonable doubt but rather to determine whether these people had the credentials and the moral character to warrant a lifetime appointment to the highest Judicial body in the land.

5 dead in Texas shooting, suspect armed with AR-15 is on the loose

All of the victims were shot from the neck up “almost execution style.”

The youngest victim was 8 years old. 2 children were found alive and unharmed beneath the bodies of 2 of the female victims. The victims are Honduran but Greg “Bullets” Abbott probably won’t pardon this particular shooter since he is a Mexican national. The usual suspects will no doubt blame Biden’s non-existent “open borders” policy even though there have been Mexican nationals in Texas as long as Mexico has been a nation, and they were Spanish nationals for centuries before that.

Given its size, relocating Disney doesn’t seem like a feasible undertaking. It would be extremely expensive and time consuming, and require a new location with similar weather. Disney is trapped. As for Florida prospering in the long term, climate change may prove a much stronger obstacle.

It’s not just the parks Disney could move their headquarters and film divisions as well as other operations not related to the parks. Move like this would have a smaller impact to floridas economy but it’s still sn impact and would send a loud message.

Here in Sidney, Nebr., after Bass Pro Shops bought Cabela’s, they promised they wouldn’t shunt any jobs out of the area (they lied). Sidney’s mayor appeared on FOX News Channel to praise Bass Pro Shops injecting a shot-in-the-arm of Sidney’s economy.

A couple weeks later Bass Pro Shops put out a corporate letter basically saying “Psyche!” and closed the Downtown Corporate Office (laying off about eight hundred middle and upper class employees). The building is now an auto repair shop.

Sidney’s local economy took a massive nose dive; a bunch of local businesses closed. The mayor was voted out in the next Republican primary.

Cabela’s built a giant office building next to their flagship store just before the sale to Bass Pro Shops. It is now an albatross hanging around the new owners’ necks. It is available for lease (the entire building) for $1 per year.

When I was stationed at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach in the Eighties, original predictions for Hurricane Hugo had Virginia Beach as X marks the spot.

As the base was flying out every aircraft which could get in the air, I was fielding calls in my shop from day shift “do we have to come into work?” Every call I pointed out there was no closure of the base ordered and no stay-at-home order, so I guess you’re fuqued.

Rev. Pat Roberson on the other side of town claimed he was praying to God to deflect the hurricane away from Virginia Beach. Coincidentally, the storm jogged left in the last run to the coast and struck Myrtle Beach, So. Car. instead. Roberson claimed victory for his prayers sparing Virginia Beach and Norfolk (fuque South Carolina though).

Christopher Burns, a former youth pastor at Perimeter Church in Georgia turned financial advisor, is now on the FBI’s Most Wanted list for allegedly defrauding dozens of investors of millions of dollars, which he splurged on a lavish lifestyle and an obsession with Disney World.

Burns, who was last seen by his ex-wife and children on Sept. 24, 2020, went on the run one day before he was scheduled to relinquish documents related to his businesses to the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to a recent release from the Department of Justice.

“Burns is charged for allegedly stealing millions of dollars from clients in an illegal investment fraud scheme,” Keri Farley, special agent in charge of FBI Atlanta, said in a statement. “Financial crimes of this nature can cause significant disruptions to the lives of those who are victimized, and the FBI is dedicated to holding these criminals accountable.”

The FBI is seeking the public’s help to locate Burns. Farley vowed the agency will “continue to pursue him no matter how long he tries to evade the law.”

Ahead of a Thursday vote on a bill to ban abortion at roughly six weeks, which ultimately failed, Nebraska State Sen. Steve Halloran (R) mused aloud, “We’ve been in a state in our country where, for 50 years, abortion has become normal, and phrases such as ‘forcing women to be pregnant’ are used.”

He added, “No one’s forcing anyone to be pregnant. Pregnancy’s a voluntary act between two consenting adults.”

Interesting news and actually something good being done by the US Army. Training is necessary sometimes.

Why won’t Biden debate loons? They have valid concerns too, like why can’t more crystals be used in curing disease?

That is when it should’ve been stopped. A man shooting his gun in a residential neighborhood should’ve been arrested and his guns seized.

Many state it is perfectly legal to have backyard gun ranges.
Texas penal code prohibits “reckless” firing of a firearm inside a city with a population of more than 100,000.
Looking at google maps I do not believe Cleveland, Texas has a population exceeding 100,000

again, the issue is that guns are now seen by many as a means of self-expression, not just the open carry but the brandishing and firing of them.

The thing about Sudan is that I don’t know who to support. I’m not sure who or if there are good guys in that fight.

Both sides are bad. The OP says that we should support the people, not intervene militarily or provide military aid. The problem with that is that existing aide groups in Sudan are under threat, unable to provide their previous level of assistance let alone scale up. The ability to aide people in Sudan is massively limited without stability.

The BBC website currently has the following headline:

Sudan crisis risks becoming a nightmare for the world - former PM

My immediate thought was — which ex-Prime Minister of the UK were they referring to? We’ve had quite a few over the past year or so. It turns out the headline writers were referring to the ex-Prime Minister of Sudan, Abdalla Hamdok.

The conserva-devils are thrashing around for something to replace their traditional target of demonization, gays and lesbians. I was an early supporter of what was then called “gay liberation” because I realized what the game was while I was still in high school, a control mechanism for the social order.

“Revealed truth” is a clearly religious con game. If Elon is not religious he is clearly under the spell of religious nutcases now and indoctrinated with their long-time rhetoric concerning “truth” enough to affect his decision-making and choice of language.

Somehow I doubt other “revealed truths” that his new friends on the weird-right share are not welcome in his orbit (flat Earth, 6000 year old Earth, Math opposition, etc) as they directly affect his income and social level in society. But rest assured, the rhetoric that places straight White males at the very top of the world’s pecking order is enticing to him.

I saw that come across my NPR feed on Mastodon, and just sighed. This is life in Sam Alito’s America.

This is life in GOP America.

People slaughtered by guns — GOP America
Women dying or injured because of lack of choice — GOP America
Women and girls being forced to carry a rapist’s baby — GOP America
Poor and working class dying because of lack of health care — GOP America
Climate change wreaking havoc on our nation — GOP America

And so much more..

In March, Florida state senator Blaise Ingoglia introduced a bill to remove Democrats from state politics entirely.
