But didn’t she say she would be killed in the US? I guess by the Biden crime syndicate.

I’ll admit to taking advantage of this when my son had garbage done to him by the director of special education. As white parents of an Asian son we were able to get things done (mom hit the School Board while I brought in the Dept. of Public Instruction) that would have been ignored by non-white parents. In the end, we got his situation fixed and her contract was, well, they declined to renew it :) Didn’t bother me at all.

“Are you taking notes on a criminal conspiracy?”

tl;dnr -
Subpoenaed surveillance tapes from Mar a Lago record an employee “allegedly asking an IT worker at the site about how the security cameras worked and how long images remained stored in the system”.

*snip*
The Washington Post reported last week that the employee was questioned repeatedly by investigators after he was seen on video footage helping another Trump aide, Walt Nauta, move boxes into a Mar-a-Lago storage room on June 2, the day before a top Justice Department official arrived with FBI agents to collect classified material in response to the subpoena.

Authorities have also examined events in mid-July surrounding a different subpoena, which sought footage from security cameras on the property. Around that time, the employee allegedly had a conversation with an IT worker at the site about how the security cameras worked and how long images remained stored in the system, the person familiar with that aspect of the investigation said.

The employee later told investigators that the conversation was innocent and was not about trying to hide anything from authorities, saying that he didn’t know at the time about the investigation or subpoena, according to another person familiar with the probe.

But those answers were met with skepticism, people familiar with the situation said.

Twitter is failing to remove 99 percent of hate speech posted by Twitter Blue users, new research has found, and instead may be boosting paid accounts that spew racism and homophobia.

Researchers at the Center For Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) flagged hate speech to the company in tweets from 100 Twitter Blue subscribers. Four days later, they say, 99 percent of the tweets were still up and none of the accounts had been removed.

The tweets, which included examples of neo-Nazism, anti-Semitism, racism, and homophobia, violate Twitter’s own hate speech policies, the researchers say. The tweets reported by the CCDH included a post claiming “Hitler was right,” accompanied by a video montage of the dictator, and another saying LGBT activists needed “IRON IN THEIR DIET. Preferably from a #AFiringSquad.”

This part of the river is rural, but by no means remote. U.S. HWY 40 is right next to it for most of its course through here. And the rivers here are as high as I’ve seen them in a long time, swallowed my friend Nick right up last Sunday. He was in a private group, six boaters in two rafts. This dude was in an inflatable kayak, alone.

Well, I’m sure you all have heard of (in fact I KNOW you all have heard of) scam call centers located in India. Well, today I learned about scam call centers in Mexico, apparently part of a network of “businesses” run by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The reason this came up is because seven workers at the “call centers” have disappeared and the police are searching for them. (I wonder how much of the interest is because one of the missing persons is a US citizen.)

Basically, just as call centers in India target elderly American English speakers, so too do these call centers, only to elderly Spanish speakers here in the USA. Raids by the cops on a couple of locations found blackboards with the names and numbers of people who live in the USA on them.

There’s no trace of the young people and they’ve been gone since May 22. I don’t have a good feeling about this. Here’s a story from El Pais in English:

That’s a lot of swirled sugary pastries.

There is a family story about that.

Just after WW2 my father was serving in the US Military Government over Occupied Germany. He had some leave so he decided to go and see Denmark.

There, he ordered dinner at a restaurant. When asked what he wanted for dessert, being a good Brooklyn boy, he decided, when in Denmark, enjoy the Danish. So he asked for a Danish.

The waiter was confused, so my father described it. The waiter had no idea, so he got the head waiter. My father went through the description again. The Head Waiter was confused. So they got the Maitre’D. Again strikeout.

Then they saw the owner of the restaurant, called him over, and went through the same exercise. The owner looked confused for a moment. Then he said “Ahh Viennese Bread!’ (wienerbrød) And sure enough….

And later, in Vienna it turned out there was a totally different name.

Never tell the Platoon Sergeant you have nothing to do.

Basic Flying Rules: Try to stay in the middle of the air. Do not go near the edges of it. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees and interstellar space. It is much more difficult to fly there.

From the last thread:
re: #214 dat_said

I want to amend this somewhat. I’m not clear that it’s a relevant comparison (per mile driven). It’s much safer to drive 350 miles across ND on I94 at 75mph than it is to drive 30 miles around the Twin Cities on I694 & I494. Maybe per trip would be a better comparison ?

Actually false.

Aside from the speed difference which makes crashes much more deadly, rural people deal much more often with road obstacles which urban drivers don’t often see (cattle, deer, elk, &c).

Urban/rural comparison (Insurance Institute of Highway Safety)

(with charts including per mile death rate which is also higher in rural areas)

Urban and rural areas have fundamentally different characteristics with regard to density of road networks, land use and travel patterns. Consequently, the characteristics of fatal motor vehicle crashes differ between rural and urban areas. For example, pedestrian and bicyclist deaths and deaths at intersections are more prevalent in urban areas, whereas a larger proportion of large truck occupant deaths and deaths on high-speed roads occur in rural areas. Although 20 percent of people in the U.S. live in rural areas and 32 percent of the vehicle miles traveled occur in rural areas, 40 percent of crash deaths occur there.

The following facts are based on analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). In FARS, rural and urban boundaries are determined by state highway departments and approved by the Federal Highway Administration. Reliable information on rural and urban areas has been available in FARS since 1977.

The more lies you believed in regarding Covid-19, the more likely you were to vote for the United Conservative Party.

In their point-weighting scale, they assigned three points for “completely or mostly agree,” two points for “somewhat agree,” and one point for any question skipped (being unable to tell a truthful statement from a falsehood).

They gave an exception to their question that “Ivermectin is a safe or effective treatment” to someone skipping the question (assigning no points), as someone might not know what Ivermectin is and thus skip it.

Despite their support for policies that might wind up with LGBTQ+ people dying, those deaths are indirect, and blood isn’t directly on their own hands. This point doesn’t get emphasized enough. He didn’t just do a good job with the negotiations; he and his team did a great job. As far as deals with terrorists go, I’d be hard-pressed to find a way he could’ve gotten more out of this deal without Qevin capitulating completely and agreeing to pass a clean debt limit increase (which, obviously, was never going to happen). I understand that our purity pony douchebros aren’t happy, but they wouldn’t be happy with any kind of compromise; and while there are elements of the deal I don’t like, the White House’s skilled negotiators managed to minimize the damage. I’ll take that as a huge win.

Not to defend the driver, but it seems that flatbed doesn’t have yellow warning lights on (or even equipped, they may be hidden behind the cab), and just stopped in the hammer lane with absolutely no warning for drivers. In New York you have to slow down and/or move over for vehicles with yellow emergency lights.

Congress threatens to block Space Command headquarters funding as abortion politics impact location decision MSNBC:

Republican and Democratic members of Congress from Alabama submitted a draft House bill late last week that would block funding for the continued growth of U.S. Space Command’s temporary headquarters in Colorado, according to documents reviewed by NBC News.

Two congressional officials said the bill would prohibit SPACECOM from spending money on constructing, leasing or modernizing facilities until the secretary of the Air Force formally selects and publicly announces the location of its permanent headquarters, which the Trump administration said would be in Huntsville, Alabama.

NBC News reported this month that Biden administration officials have signaled privately to Defense Department leaders and lawmakers that they are considering reversing the planned move to Alabama over concerns about the state’s strict anti-abortion laws. Since the Trump

A busy holiday weekend bookended with six hour drives as I went up to western NY state to visit my brother.

Saturday was a long day as I went with my brother and a visiting geologist from West Texas to look at local black shale strata and geology locales. We started about 8am and got home about 9pm.

One place we visited multiple spots along is Eighteen Mile Creek south of Buffalo. The two pictures below were taken at a spot of personal interest. I’d last been there over fifty years before.

As I was growing up my maternal grandparents initially had a house south of Buffalo whose property backed on this creek. Their property was immediately to the north of these two posted photos. My brother and I (who was 6-7 at the time) used to come down to the creek to fish, skip stones, and gather crawdads.

The third picture is mandatory cat photo. This is Dizzy, one of the two orange tabby indoor cats initially overlording my sister-in-law. I think I have pictures elsewhere from this trip of the two outdoor cats as well.

These fuckers are projecting like IMAX and allow criminals and gun nuts to collect even more deadly firearms without caring about the consequences of flooding the nation with guns.

And the reverse is also true of the GOP: They project in both directions. Last year here they tried to pass a bill prohibiting defunding the police or reducing their budgets in any city or village. Democrats led the charge to defeat the bill, noting two-thirds of municipalities in this state have no police (and a few counties have no sheriffs).

Our county seat a few years ago disestablished the city police department, because it was cheaper simply to pay the county sheriff.

The only police we have in my county are the Bayard City Police (in a town of 800), my village’s marshal (who’s job is really boring here except for the occasional street party), and the sheriff’s department (which now has TWO deputies).

Knowledge overconfidence is associated with anti-consensus views on controversial scientific issues

Abstract (rest at the link):

Public attitudes that are in opposition to scientific consensus can be disastrous and include rejection of vaccines and opposition to climate change mitigation policies. Five studies examine the interrelationships between opposition to expert consensus on controversial scientific issues, how much people actually know about these issues, and how much they think they know. Across seven critical issues that enjoy substantial scientific consensus, as well as attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines and mitigation measures like mask wearing and social distancing, results indicate that those with the highest levels of opposition have the lowest levels of objective knowledge but the highest levels of subjective knowledge. Implications for scientists, policymakers, and science communicators are discussed.

In extremely local news, tomorrow begins “Camp Clarke Days” in the county seat.

The public school will put on a play (my wife and I have tickets so we will go), there will be a parade, a burger feed put on by the Girl Scouts and Fire Department, partying in the Community Centre, &c.

The Camp Clarke Bridge was the first bridge across the North Platte River, put in west of Bridgeport, intended to relieve traffic across the ferry between Bridgeport and Northport.

Camp Clarke Bridge (Nebraska state government Website)

Henry T. Clarke was a veteran Nebraska freighter and bridge builder, whose best-known bridge (at Camp Clarke, near Sidney) was completed in June 1876. Clarke recalled before the Nebraska State Historical Society annual meeting on January 9, 1901, the circumstances of his construction of the Camp Clarke Bridge (NSHS Proceedings and Collections):

“In the winter of 1875 and ‘76, Stephens & Wilcox of Omaha and other merchants requested that I should look over the North Platte line to Camp Robinson and Sheridan. They and other Omaha jobbers wanted to make a short line between Sidney and the military stations and the Black Hills gold country, which was then going as far west as Cheyenne, and crossing the Platte at old Fort Laramie, ninety miles west of Camp Clarke, and see if it was practicable to bridge the Platte at that point. I did so, and reported favorably. The bridge would be some 2,000 feet or more long. They then undertook to form a bridge company and put in a bridge, but found Omaha people were not willing to put money in so large an undertaking in the Sioux and Cheyenne Indian country, and had to give it up. Then they came to me and wanted to know if I would put in a toll bridge and accept a bonus. I answered, ‘Yes,’ and the amount named was satisfactory. They soon made up the amount, and I placed one of my bridge foremen in the lumber yard of Katers & Son, Moline, Ill., and Schruker & Miller, Davenport, Ia., to construct the bridge.

“The Chicago & Rock Island and the Union Pacific Railroads saw the importance of the move and freighted all material free of cost from those points to Sidney-consisting of three large wagon train loads and teamed it from Sidney to the river.

A road that sees maybe 25 cars throughout the day. So, I walked over and did my usual “let’s have turtle soup for supper”. Actually, I did my usual “let’s step back and wait a bit to see if it will move on its own”. Which, of course it did.

I have failed in my nature lessons which generally boil down to “leave it the hell alone”. Bunch of baby bunnies that look abandoned? Probably not - let’s keep the dogs away and check on them once in a while. Fawn curled up in the tall grass and flowers? It’s fine. Baby robin bouncing on the ground trying to fly? Give it time. It’ll figure it out. Turtle crossing the road? Pick it up and it will piss on you and, if it’s a snapper, will try to bite you because it has no idea you’re trying to help.

And, if you ever actually need to move a snapper, do not grab it by its tail or on the side of its shell.

Here’s how to move a snapper (and pity the poor snapper who had to endure this): How to help a Snapping Turtle Cross the Road

Nazi-promoting ex-Trump staffer claims to be working with GOP lawmakers in Hunter Biden probe

rawstory.com

Republican lawmakers are distancing themselves from a former Trump White House staffer who has ties to a prominent white nationalist influencer.

Garrett Ziegler has been boasting that he’s met with congressional investigators to discuss Hunter Biden’s laptop and his overseas business dealings, and he spoke at length to HuffPo about those meetings and his promotion of online posts by Nick Fuentes and other right-wing extremists.

“There are some things that I agree with Nick Fuentes on, and some that I don’t,” Ziegler said, adding that he enjoys sharing provocative material online. “Sometimes you just do it because you think it’s a very, very good thing for the conversation.”

Ziegler is best known for helping to usher Michael Flynn, Sidney Powell and ex-overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne into the White House for an infamously unhinged meeting in December 2020 where they reportedly urged Donald Trump to seize voting machines, and he continues to insist that President Joe Biden stole the election in “multiple ways” as part of a “soft coup.”

11-month-old dies after being left in car while parents went to church: Police (WESH-TV, Daytona Beach, Fla.)

An 11-month-old baby girl has died after being left in a car for three hours while her parents attended a Florida church service, police said.

Police in Palm Bay responded Sunday around 1 p.m. to a report of an unresponsive infant in a vehicle.

“When they arrived, they learned the infant had been left in a car for approximately three hours while the parents went to the church service,” the Palm Bay Police Department said in a statement.

The infant was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced deceased, police said Tuesday. A police department spokesperson did not have the time of death available.

No arrests have been made in the case at this time and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

“This is an unfortunate incident, and our condolences and prayers go out to the family,” Palm Bay Police Chief Mario Augello said in a statement.

Lies. It was deliberate. This is one of the consequences of people who bitch about children in public spaces being too loud or fussy. Parents leave them in places where they can be injured or killed instead.

She intentionally got pregnant to avoid prison. The judge agreed that white woman shouldn’t be imprisoned while pregnant.

After her daughter was born, she jockeyed for years arguing white woman should be separated from her new child because the child would suffer.

I get that some people don’t like kids. I can understand and even somewhat empathize with that (in general, kids drain me emotionally/mentally). However, the simple fact of the matter is that kids exist, they need to be exposed to social situations to learn how to interact with other humans, and kids can’t be left alone to their own devices for long periods of time. If you are a person who has trouble with kids (even misbehaving ones) in public places, that is what we call a “you problem,” and you need to keep your damn mouth shut about it. I can guarantee you, a parent with a misbehaving kid is already miserable enough without your complaints and remarks.

Apparently Twitter used to use Redis for these functions, but Melon Husk, in his infinite wisdom, decided to cut that service for whatever rea$on. At least, that’s what I heard was at the root cause of the complete cluster that was DeSantis’ announcement.

Federal prison math says that she’ll get out in 9 years, 4.5 months, assuming she gets all the good time coming to her. Absent another pandemic (which turned this kind of upside-down) or something similar, she has to serve 85% of her sentence.

It’s really too bad the white guys who were completely dazzled by her act aren’t serving time in prison too.

She’s already had to go without for two weeks because of inventory shortages and her idiot of a doctor is refusing to allow her to move to a different dose (which some pharmacies do have in stock).

And worst of all, we have no clue when this shortage is going to end.

There’s a good chance there might a be pharmacy that has it in a larger city less than an hour from here, but said city is in another state and it would just be more drama for her to try and fill it there.

Mexico asserts that Smith & Wesson enable drug cartels and criminals by selling weapons through cutouts and straw purchasers in the USA.

The case was decided against Mexico in district court on the grounds of the law which protects gun manufacturers from being sued. Mexico has appealed to the First Circuit, where a bunch of Republicans filed an amicus brief in favour of guns and support of murders in Mexico.

Not just diabetes meds (though I’ve had some -thankfully minor - problems getting mine): for whatever reason* we have run into numerous “supply-chain” problems getting various Rx items lately (unfortunately, several pain meds as well): sorta unprecedented: we have been dealing with a really good pharmacy here (NYC) for years, and have rarely run into serious delays/shortages getting stuff. Now seems a lot more common.

*non-medical: most of the shortages seem to be from the manufacturers on down through the distribution chain(s).

Supply chain problems have largely eased across most products as covid related supply crunches have eased. There are still issues in baby formula and a few other spaces; for baby formula it’s because of recalls and safety issues where there are two major producers that control like 90% of the market and equivalent products simply aren’t available or exist.

Drug shortages are another area where producers have issues - some are the result of off label use driving up usage and limiting supply to those who need it for on-label use. Others are manufacturing issues.

Florida again…

Florida house fires were fake hate crimes staged by owner behind on payments, sheriff says

al.com

Two Florida house fires that appeared to be racially motivated were staged hate crimes, and it’s the property owner who faces charges, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

George Carneiro is accused of resorting to arson after he got behind on his payments for the two newly built homes, investigators said in a news release.

Both fires occurred March 13 in the same Clay Hill neighborhood, causing “substantial property damage,” officials said. The unincorporated Clay Hill community is about 36 miles southwest of Jacksonville.

“The investigation led to Carneiro following the discovery of a video from March 12, 2023, which captured one of Carneiro’s employees purchasing fuel tanks with cash at a Walmart,” the sheriff’s office said.

“This video evidence was key in establishing a connection between Carneiro and the arson. Carneiro owned the homes that were burned and bank records revealed that he was significantly behind on his payments. …The fires were originally staged with false evidence of a hate crime to conceal the true motive.”

Black man escorted out of Shasta County meeting for protesting white man’s use of N-word (with video, Redding, Calif. Record-Searchlight, May 30, 2023)

A Black man was kicked out of Tuesday’s Shasta County Board of Supervisors meeting after he objected to a white speaker using the N-word while addressing the five-member board.

Nathan Pinkney was escorted from the chamber by a Securitas security guard after board chair Patrick Jones got upset with him for speaking out from his seat in the audience.

The man who used the slur, frequent board attendee Alex Bielecki, was not chastised.

Jeff Gorder, who retired as Shasta County public defender in 2018, scolded Jones for not stopping Bielecki from talking.

“The Constitutional right of free speech is not unlimited. You can’t yell fire in this crowded room or disturbing the peace to use offensive words that are likely to result in a violent action. You don’t tolerate that kind of language here. You should gavel that down and shut it down,” Gorder said.

This sucks. I have called approximately 18 different pharmacies in my area and not ONE has my wifes diabetes medication in stock.

The Judge Judy show takes two people or organisations who are facing off in California courts, and agree to appear on her show to make their cases.

Both the plaintiff and respondent are paid to appear on the show; judgements if any are taken out of the payment.

Giving garbage-picking and dumpster diving a new name and claiming it’s the new hip thing is probably not a good sign.

Have you ever been tempted to grab a stylish, forsaken chair or couch off of the curb and make it your own? “That’d look better in my living room than wasting away in a dumpster,” you might think.

You’re not alone. Stooping is a rising trend across North America, and it benefits everyone — people with too much stuff, people with too little, and everyone who seeks to waste as little as possible.

“Stooping is the sourcing of free items left out on the street as trash, or sourcing of items that have been left out in the hopes that they will be stooped by a stooper,” as The Sorry Girls explain in an Instagram reel.

In this context, “stooper” doesn’t refer to someone with bad posture or a lowered moral code, as traditional definitions of the word may suggest — instead, it’s someone who reclaims items on the street that have been discarded from their previous homes. It’s a win-win transaction that’s entirely free of charge.

WHAT IS STOOPING? THE MONEY-SAVING PRACTICE IS TAKING SOCIAL MEDIA BY STORM (TCD)

There’s also nothing new about this practice. In Minnesota, it’s been a long-standing tradition that if you want to get rid of something, but not necessarily throw it out - i.e. an otherwise functional item that might see use in another family (especially true of kids’ toys) - you set it out on the curbside a few days before trash pickup. If it’s still there on trash day, away it goes.
