Steely Dan’s Legendary Lost Song, Rediscovered: “Second Arrangement”
Posted at YouTube by the Roger Nichols Estate, a cleaned up version of a newly discovered rough mix on DAT of the legendary lost Steely Dan song, “Second Arrangement.” Amazing. It was supposed to have been erased accidentally by an assistant engineer, but a digital audio tape of a nightly rough mix was found in Roger Nichols’ archives.
I’ve heard about this for most of my life but never thought I’d actually hear it.
Hey! Here it is, the unknown, newly discovered DAT tape that was in the Roger Nichols Media collection. We aren’t sure, but this could be a copy of the rough mix. But DATs are awful and it sounds muddy and we had to de-noise it. Help us Peter Jackson!
And for fun, I made a little video slide show about us transferring the tape, what i have been personally going through which was weirdly in line with what this song is about, some moments of the chaos of having to lovingly archive and store dad’s stuff after he died, and some more never before seen home video filmed by Roger!
Special Thanks and shout-out to Bill Smith for transferring, Steven Shea for capturing, My sister for flying out to do it with me, my mom for keeping us and the tape safe for 40 years, my cousin Cari for coming with me to the DAT transfer, and my DAD “The Immortal” - he took the old slide photos.
ALSO get your drum samples.
