Steely Dan’s Legendary Lost Song, Rediscovered: “Second Arrangement”

Music • Views: 16,192

Posted at YouTube by the Roger Nichols Estate, a cleaned up version of a newly discovered rough mix on DAT of the legendary lost Steely Dan song, “Second Arrangement.” Amazing. It was supposed to have been erased accidentally by an assistant engineer, but a digital audio tape of a nightly rough mix was found in Roger Nichols’ archives.

I’ve heard about this for most of my life but never thought I’d actually hear it.

Hey! Here it is, the unknown, newly discovered DAT tape that was in the Roger Nichols Media collection. We aren’t sure, but this could be a copy of the rough mix. But DATs are awful and it sounds muddy and we had to de-noise it. Help us Peter Jackson!

And for fun, I made a little video slide show about us transferring the tape, what i have been personally going through which was weirdly in line with what this song is about, some moments of the chaos of having to lovingly archive and store dad’s stuff after he died, and some more never before seen home video filmed by Roger!

Special Thanks and shout-out to Bill Smith for transferring, Steven Shea for capturing, My sister for flying out to do it with me, my mom for keeping us and the tape safe for 40 years, my cousin Cari for coming with me to the DAT transfer, and my DAD “The Immortal” - he took the old slide photos.

ALSO get your drum samples.

Moved from the previous thread (this one wasn’t here when I started writing):

re: #138 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I’m home from Cheyenne.

I will be calling the VA Inspector General office (for the third time over harassment on masking but that’s a different story).

Gory dentist visit behind the hide bar. ‘Twasn’t pleasant. I was also infuriated by the dentist.

So I stayed at a hotel in Cheyenne last night. In the afternoon yesterday, my right cheek started swelling terribly, and my right eye and right ear started hurting. Swelling inside my mouth got huge.

Today I saw the dentist. I was supposed to be scheduled for an annual examination, so they did that as well.

X-rays showed the bottom leftmost tooth (which had previously burst an abscess when I repeatedly soaked it in hot coffee) was fine. It needs no work.

The upper right bicuspid (my only remaining tooth on that side and the location of pain and swelling) had a massive abscess. The dentist noted that the abscess had eroded my jaw to the point where the tooth was no longer held by anything but my gum. He suggested two options:

a) Take antibiotics to reduce the abscess and hope that improved things.
b) Remove the tooth even though the normal procedure is to beat back an abscess first, because the infectious area had grown so large it could become dangerous.

I went with b.

Taking a needle directly into an abscess is the most exquisite pain I’ve ever felt, and that includes breaking my leg in the past. My wife tells me the screams caused others in the waiting room to flinch.

The tooth came right out with only a slight pull (because not attached to anything).

The doc cleaned up as much of the abscess through the socket as he could, then said he would prescribe clindamycin to clear out the infection.

And this is where it gets frustrating.

He said he would prescribe either Tylenol or ibuprofen for pain. I informed him that those have never worked for me, including in dental settings in the past with the VA and the Navy. Seven times he asked which of those I wanted, and seven times I told him “no I won’t take them.”

I told him if he couldn’t give me anything else, I would take aspirin at home. He told me not to because it can increase bleeding. (So can ibuprofen.)

He finally told me he would just write the antibiotic prescription, and another for a rinse instead.

When I got to the pharmacy, there was a prescription for 800mg ibuprofen tablets. I cancelled that prescription, picked up the others, and made my way back over to the other side of the hospital to the dentistry clinic. I told the receptionist I’d cancelled the ibuprofen prescription and asked her to inform the dentist. I also asked her to ask him if he wasn’t going to give me anything which works for pain why he didn’t just tell me so after seven refusals. I told her I will be self-medicating with aspirin and rum for pain, and she can have him put that in my chart.

I go back in September to be evaluated for a partial plate since I have no more upper teeth on my mouth’s right side.

In lotto news:

I WON ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! (Crap.)

why didn’t they go back into the studio and just do it again? Was it just one of those things where they recorded it for an album, decided it wasn’t up to scratch, and no one realized until too late the track was just blank now?

I would imagine with time and some ‘AI’ you could build a 3D map of the capitol, including the secret passages and rooms.

“I’m one of the ones pushing for the release, by the way, of all the J6 video,” Higgins said. “We got 60,000 hours of video from Jan. 4, 5 and 6 — I want it all released to the American people so that we can crowdsource that investigation.”

In the interview, he makes the absurd claim that the Jan. 6 attack has “FBI fingerprints all over it,” alleging, without evidence, that law enforcement “staged” the attack.

He went on to needle some of his colleagues: “I’m not falling for … this story that I’m even hearing from some of my colleagues — that the release of all that video will somehow endanger the Capitol or members of Congress. That’s crazy, man.”

“…In a passage reviewed by Rolling Stone, former Trump Department of Homeland Security appointee Miles Taylor writes about an April 2018 conversation in which Miller allegedly advocated an attack on a migrant ship headed for the United States. Miller, Taylor writes, argued for the potential mass killing of civilians by suggesting they were not protected under the U.S. Constitution because they were in international waters.”

Erin Burnett talking to the mayor of Kyiv:
EB: Where’s Putin?
Mayor: Who knows - he’s hiding somewhere.
EB: What about Prigozhin? Do you know where he is?
Mayor: I can’t talk about that because [ for OpSec reasons].

So there’s no respect for Putin, and while Ukrainian intelligence may know where Prigozhin is, they aren’t saying diddly squat.

17
jaunte  Jun 26, 2023 • 5:37:36pm

“…Miller’s stance on immigration and human rights remains deeply relevant. Trump is the frontrunner for the 2024 GOP nomination, and multiple people intimately familiar with the matter say that Miller, along with other anti-immigration hardliners of his stripe, are still on the shortlist for administration posts should the twice-impeached, twice-indicted former president retake the White House. Trump himself is campaigning on promises to run on more extreme anti-immigrant policies than his first term’s, including proposals for attacking or invading Mexico and reviving and expanding his travel “Muslim ban.”

For years, including well before his entrance into Trump’s inner circle during the 2016 election, Miller has been a uniquely aggressive, far-right voice operating in conservative and anti-immigration circles in Washington, D.C. The Trump administration’s draconian immigration policies — largely spearheaded by Miller — became so heavily entrenched in government that some significant aspects endured during the Biden administration.”

Time for another recipe!

The Best Crispy Roast Potatoes Ever Recipe

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS

Large chunks of potato maximize the contrast between exterior and interior.

Parboiling the potatoes in alkaline water breaks down their surfaces, creating tons of starchy slurry for added surface area and crunch.

Offering you the choice of oil, duck fat, goose fat, or beef fat means you can get whichever flavor you want.

Infusing the oil or fat with garlic and herbs gives the potato crust extra flavor.

Ingredients

Kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon (4g) baking soda
4 pounds (about 2 kg) russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters, sixths, or eighths, depending on size (see note)
5 tablespoons (75ml) extra-virgin olive oil, duck fat, goose fat, or beef fat
Small handful picked fresh rosemary leaves, finely chopped
3 medium cloves garlic, minced
Freshly ground black pepper
Small handful fresh parsley leaves, minced

Adjust oven rack to center position and preheat oven to 450°F (230°C) (or 400°F (200°C) if using convection). Heat 2 quarts (2L) water in a large pot over high heat until boiling. Add 2 tablespoons kosher salt (about 1 ounce; 25g), baking soda, and potatoes and stir. Return to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook until a knife meets little resistance when inserted into a potato chunk, about 10 minutes after returning to a boil.

Meanwhile, combine olive oil, duck fat, or beef fat with rosemary, garlic, and a few grinds of black pepper in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat. Cook, stirring and shaking pan constantly, until garlic just begins to turn golden, about 3 minutes. Immediately strain oil through a fine-mesh strainer set in a large bowl. Set garlic/rosemary mixture aside and reserve separately.

When potatoes are cooked, drain carefully and let them rest in the pot for about 30 seconds to allow excess moisture to evaporate. Transfer to bowl with infused oil, season to taste with a little more salt and pepper, and toss to coat, shaking bowl roughly, until a thick layer of mashed potato-like paste has built up on the potato chunks.

Transfer potatoes to a large rimmed baking sheet and separate them, spreading them out evenly. Transfer to oven and roast, without moving, for 20 minutes. Using a thin, flexible metal spatula to release any stuck potatoes, shake pan and turn potatoes. Continue roasting until potatoes are deep brown and crisp all over, turning and shaking them a few times during cooking, 30 to 40 minutes longer.

Transfer potatoes to a large bowl and add garlic/rosemary mixture and minced parsley. Toss to coat and season with more salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.

And the end result…ain’t McDonald’s fries…

Shooting the driver would be my main method.

The issue is the sudden acceleration an electric car can achieve.

The gates at FE Warren AFB have been reworked so that you have to weave through fixed barriers to get to the gate guards, then go around a large cement roundabout (there are no streets off the roundabout), then over high humps in the road that will tear out the underside of your car if you go too fast, and finally a set of active barriers which can be lifted out of the road to create a steel wall.

105 110, although the latter is surely an undercount, probably closer to 115, as heat index #’s are hourly snapshots, not daily highs.

Tomorrow and Wednesday it is going to get HOT, with this heat dome over us. I can’t remember a June like this, and I’ve been here for 34 years.

Just an FYI for folks looking to travel in the near future: The guy working the desk overnight knows enough tech/engineering stuff to be dangerous and that’s it. We’re taught how to fix the most basic issues and make notes to have maintenance guys fix everything else. If you call because you’re having a problem with X and he tells you you’ll have to wait for a maintenance guy to fix X, pestering him about it or demanding he find some way to fix it will only do one thing: Piss him off.

Like I noted yesterday, the only reason anybody gives a fuck about this tragedy beyond the families themselves is because A) They were diving on the Titanic and B) They’re rich. Five random yahoos whose tourist sub disappeared while looking at a dead Dodge Dart at the bottom of Lake Superior would have been a Page A16 blurb, but five rich people that go missing while diving to see the Titanic sets off the media’s “Missing White Woman” addiction.

THE END OF RAMMSTEIN? Serious Accusations Against Till Lindemann

Singer of German band Rammstein accused of recruiting fans for sex

Several people who attended concerts by the German band Rammstein have come forward describing a system whereby young female fans are recruited to have sex with the shock rockers’ lead singer, Till Lindemann, during and after their shows, following one fan’s allegation that her drink had been spiked at an afterparty in Vilnius last month.

The reports have gathered momentum just ahead of Rammstein’s sold-out four-night residency at Munich’s Olympic Stadium starting on Wednesday, prompting the concert promoter to announce there would be no afterparties following the show nor a so-called “row zero” experience for select fans directly in front of the stage.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news to the troops of Wagner PMC, but if your name is not “Yevgeny Prigozhin” or one of his business partners…he sold your ass out. That’s what Saturday really was: scaring the shit out of Putin to get him to cut a check and give Prigozhin long enough to escape before he started bringing the hammer down.

Think about it: Shoigu and Gerasimov remain in the positions, the MOD is already seizing your equipment and still demanding you sign contracts with them, and the bald fuck that you spent the better part of a year fighting and dying for in Bakhmut is now filming his podcast in Belarus while your sorry ass is still camping in a ditch in Ukraine.

Welcome to the Russian Army, comrade, hope you didn’t have any future plans that involved something other than dying face-down in the mud or getting shipped off one of Russia’s many picturesque prisons.

re: #173 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

How many psychologists have written about how American culture and media are ignoring the mass suicides/murders in Kenya by a Christian church?

Yeah… kind of quiet on that front.

It’s not just in the US. There’s still a war on in Syria, there’s a genocide in Darfur, there are all sorts of horrible things going on in the world. As an American living overseas, though, the amount of attention that US news gets worldwide is amazing and out of all proportion.

Part of it is America’s oversized role in culture, so everyone is sort of familiar with it even if they don’t quite know where Ohio is, and this is more entertainment that they can relate to. Cynical me thinks that a significant amount of the attention is distraction from problems in their own countries which are a little more difficult to confront and deal with. Racist American cops? Boo, hiss! Racist French cops? Well, those Arabs are kinda scary and you never know and maybe the cops went too far but on the other hand…

I suspect US media (of whatever corporate interest) do not want to put too much attention on the Kenya preacher tragedy because it will shine a light on the role that US evangelicals have played in radicalizing fanatics in Africa.

The tragedy is especially awkward to cover because the suicides/murders were done in Jesus name.

It’s not a non-Christian sect. The label on the front says “Jesus”.

And that alone scares of US media, and frankly most Americans.

A small victory for church-state separation.

Charter School Fails To Convince SCOTUS That Girls Are ‘Fragile Vessels’ Who Must Wear Skirts (Wonkette, yesterday)

That headline is not hyperbole: The charter school system actually argues that in their case.

They also have a required pledge (not the Pledge of Allegiance) which requires students to reject experts and rational argument (that pledge is included in the article).

The school argued since they are a Christian private school, girls have no constitutional rights. (North Carolina taxpayers fund this charter system.) The appellate court rejected that argument (and all the rest). The Supreme Court declined to hear the case (that’s a surprise since they seem to want to be the ushers of Christian fascism).

The owner of the charter school has insisted for years that Christians suffer discrimination in US society.

Not even ugly cute, but I am happy for the little guy!

A seven-year-old Chinese Crested named Scooter who narrowly avoided being put down after being born with deformed back legs has won the title of World’s Ugliest Dog.

Scooter, who was almost euthanized in his early years over his birth defects, swept the competition at the Petaluma after being compared to a ‘hairy hippopotamus.’

The unconventionally handsome pup has a crown of white hair which frizzes out from the side of his head, a tongue that remains out in the open, and a unique walk using just his front legs.

And today’s contender for the “No Shit, Sherlock” award:

The report criticizes the lack of urgency from the FBI. “Federal officials simply didn’t believe what they were being told,” the Post reported.

The report states they “were biased toward discounting the possibility of such an unprecedented event.”

“The failure was largely a failure of imagination, to see threats that the Capitol could be breached as credible, despite the fact that the threats were shared publicly and in such high volume and in a variety of ways,” said Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.), the chairman of the committee.

“These agencies repeatedly downplayed the threat and failed to sound the alarm.”

Given what we’ve seen and heard at Congressional hearings since then, the problem isn’t so much as a lack of imagination as it is that the FBI have a very clear bias towards believing that the only violent threats worth investigating…are Antifa and BLM. That they still think it’s the 1970s and they have to be vigilant against attacks by Weather Underground or the Black Panthers.

Oh look, Russia’s pledged even more weapon shipments to the Ukrainian Army. How thoughtful of them.

///////

The heavy weapons (artillery, rocket launchers, tanks etc.) Wagner Group have been operating all belong to the Russian MOD. Assuming the MOD stops supplying Wagner Group with ammo, fuel, spare parts etc. then the heavy weapons are useless to them anyway.
The problem the MOD faces is the loss of 25,000 trained and experienced troops to operate those weapons even when they are returned to their control. That is going to hurt.

South Carolina’s now all-male Supreme Court will hear arguments today why it should reverse itself from earlier this year and approve a slightly tweaked six week abortion ban. If it does so as expected, there will be nowhere left south of Virginia most women will be able to go to get an abortion once they realize they are actually pregnant. N.C. just passed a 12 week ban, but it requires women to jump through so many hoops to qualify that out of state women of limited means simply won’t be able to get an abortion there.

As usual, Trump insists that the recordings which implicate him in criminal activity, such as his call blackmailing Zelensky and his call threatening Raffensberger, actually exonerate him. And Cult45 will believe him. I hope Jack Smith has the testimony of the people Trump was showing the classified Iranian war plans to, since Trump has hidden/destroyed or sold them.

I forgot how much it hurts my muscles when she’s straining on the lead. I also had to extend the walk because she was too excited to pee or poo (she never did either, but I had to get my car into the shop from whence I write this). Medical intervention like a Caesarian when the foetus is viable would save her life and maybe the life of the foetus but otherwise her body just isn’t up to the stress and physical requirements of pregnancy. It’s very likely she’d miscarry early on in the pregnancy.

Racism. That’s what appeals to them. The only difference between them and bog-standard Republicans is Trump openly states his racism while other Republican politicians used coded speech in the past. Trump has been pretty good at getting Republicans to be more open about their real conservatism (DeSantis saying “shoot people at the border”).

When people ask “why do Republican voters vote against their own self-interest” they miss the point. Their self-interest is racism.

For some reason the podcast Reveal uploads for me. I don’t remember subscribing and I don’t often listen. But one of the more recent is “Culture Wars go to College.” It’s about New College (public and extremely competitive) in Florida and DeSantis’s dismantling of the school and its liberal mission in order to turn it into a Hillsdale (private Christian and competitive in a different nature). It’s absolutely maddening to hear the voices of the new board in meetings—the smugness of Chris Ruffo, etc.; and to hear the sadness in the voices of students and faculty. It’s startling and depressing.

Kari Lake’s ‘cheesy’ new book could cost her big in upcoming defamation trial: columnist

rawstory.com

Failed Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake’s new book is a “cheesy ego trip,” writes Arizona Republic columnist Laurie Roberts in a scathing analysis published on Tuesday.

But it’s more than that, she argued: it’s also an epic self-own that could add ammunition to a lawsuit that was just filed against her.

“If you are Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer’s lawyers, you probably already have it — annotated and ready for use in your lawsuit against the nation’s second sorest loser. (Surely, you can figure out who takes top honors in that category.)” wrote Roberts. “Richer sued Lake last week for defamation, apparently deciding it was about time that someone stood up to Lake, who has built a national following based in large part of her accusations that Richer is a criminal.”

Roberts then goes over details in the book that she says could be particularly troubling for Lake in a defamation trial.

“Over and over, Lake has recounted the many fantastical ways Richer and his apparent partner in crime, Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates, set out to ‘sabotage Election Day’ and steal her gubernatorial glory,” wrote Roberts. “Most specifically, when they (supposedly) slipped 300,000 phony ballots into the vote count and when they (supposedly) intentionally rigged Election Day printers to spit out ballots that couldn’t be counted. ‘This is how they sabotaged Election Day in Arizona,’ she has repeatedly charged in press conferences, on social media, to right-wing media — basically to anyone who would listen.”

Today is Siebenschläfer (Dormouse Day) in Germany, a date in all the farmer’s almanacs that is supposed to be predictive of the weather for the next six weeks.

I hope it is right; slightly overcast, 75 degrees and breezy. I could deal with that for the rest of summer.

They love DJT because he speaks to them on their level about issues that appeal to them.

Their self-interest is racism.

correct

misdirecting them away from their amorphic economic interests and instead getting them to focus on their position in ‘the hierarchy’. that’s some tangible grievance right there.

Just popped up on the Post

Supreme Court rejects theory that would have meant radical changes to election rules

washingtonpost.com

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the theory that state legislatures have almost unlimited power to decide the rules for federal elections and draw partisan congressional maps without interference from state courts.

The Constitution’s Elections Clause “does not insulate state legislatures from the ordinary exercise of state judicial review,” Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote in a 6 to 3 decision. (Gee I wonder who the Three Stooges are who bought the bullshit????)

Under the theory advanced by North Carolina’s Republican legislative leaders, but rejected by the court, state lawmakers throughout the country would have had exclusive authority to structure federal elections, subject only to intervention by Congress.

Interestingly, I wasn’t quite as worried about this one as some others. I was 96% sure Kavanaugh would rule correctly; of all the conservative assholes on the Calvinball Court, Kavanaugh - in a stroke of supreme irony - seems to be the one who actually has a semblance of respect for jurisprudence. That leaves Roberts as the tiebreaker between the 3 liberal justices + Beerbong Fratbro, and the 3 supreme assholes + Barrett. He’s not completely stupid, so he probably figured it was better to shut down the next coup attempt before it even got off the ground, and managed to talk Barrett into agreeing with him in the process.

According to Associated Press reporter Michael R. Sisak, the Manhattan DA’s Office is seeking “e-mails exchanged among Trump Organization employees and the White House” as well as “e-mails between Trump’s wife, Melania, and Rhona Graff, a longtime company executive.”

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, former senior adviser to Melania Trump and author of the 2020 book “Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship With the First Lady,” responded to AP’s reporting on Twitter Monday night.

Wolkoff tweeted, “Melania Trump used several email addresses, texts, and Signal to communicate with me and others while working in the White House and prosecutors want to see them.”

This is fantastic news. With the GQP having failed to place election deniers in SoS offices in any swing states, and courts having the power to review state legislative shenanigans, there will be very little opportunity for the GQP to certify Trump electors in states Biden wins.

Just a got a new alert that SCOTUS did NOT side with the RWNJs on the state legislature redistricting issue.

Kinda surprised that Gorsuch voted for that insane theory*: Alito and Thomas are hopeless, and would have likely voted for the ISL principle simply because some “liberal” argued against it, but ol’ Neil usually knows/does better.

*Basically, that state legislatures ought to be able to ignore any provisions of their state constitutions when/if they feel like it. The test case was supposed to only apply to election issues (I think), but, as usual with RW radical legal stuff, it would probably be eventually construed to enable some sort of absolutist legislative dictatorship in states where a Statehouse majority feels like it. And we can guess what “color” those states might be.

NOTE: As typical, I am neither a lawyer nor a Constitutional scholar, and clarification will be appreciated (with an upding), but as I read analyses of the “ISL” case, ISTM that this was, as usual, a “thin end of the wedge” case: a ruling that State Leges can bypass/ignore state courts/constitutions on electoral issues would, IMO, almost inevitably lead to it being applied to any other laws/reg/rules the RWNJs want to impose. For once, SCOTUS (minus the Three Stooges) has done right…

I don’t think Alito, Thomas and Gorsuch voted that the courts can’t overrule the legislature. If I understand correctly the case is moot and they wanted it dismissed. Possibly so it could come back later in a slightly less crazypants form, but they still didn’t vote to let the legislature run elections without supervision.

Wasn’t the issue one of running elections without judicial review, rather than “supervision” per se??
(In my IANAL opinion, equally dangerous)

re: #321 Jay C

The ISL was based on a clause in the U.S. Constitution which applies to elections, so it couldn’t really be used to prevent judicial review in other cases. However the GOP has been seeking to capture state courts by putting political hacks on the bench, like a bunch of mini-Alitos, to rubber stamp whatever they want.

Patrick Lahey, the president of Triton Submarines, told The New York Times that OceanGate Expeditions CEO Stockton Rush was on a “predatory” mission to convince influential people to support his doomed Titan submersible.

Rush was one of five passengers who died on board the Titan last week during a dive to the wreck of the Titanic. Debris found by search-and-rescue teams on Thursday suggested the vessel had suffered a catastrophic implosion.

Lahey, a friend of Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a passenger who died on the Titan, told the Times that Rush had a talent for convincing people about the safety of the sub.

“He could even convince someone who knew and understood the risks… it was really quite predatory,” he said.

Lahey said he warned Nargeolet, who he referred to as PH, of the risks. “I told him in very candid terms why he shouldn’t be out there,” he told the Times.

“He understood. I believe PH thought in some way that by being out there he could help these guys avoid a tragedy but, instead, he ended up in the middle of one,” Lahey continued.

Lahey called the Titan a “monstrosity” and said he told Nargeolet before the journey that he was becoming an ambassador for the unsafe mission by becoming a passenger.

When we were children attending public schools, girls had to wear skirts or dresses, which is absolutely stupid when you live in a state that has real winters. So we all wore pants under our skirt and took them off and put them in a locker.

Most of the pledge seems ok except for the last paragraph and the lines criticizing experts and rational argument.

I think his personality disorder makes learning rules impossible. He thinks he can just make up rules as he goes. All he had to do is listen to lawyers rather than random wingnuts on TV and return the documents, but again, the personality disorder made that impossible, and instead he sought out idiots that would go along with his claims.
