Lyrics:
Call me in a minute
I’ll be on my way
I was born to make you love me
So listen when I say

Every chance I get
I want you in the flesh
To rub you and hug you, my pet
Every chance I get

Feel you thinkin’ of me
You know I feel it too
Trapped here in the darkness
Or wrapped up in thoughts of you

Every chance I get
I want you in the flesh
To rub you and hug you, my pet
Every chance I get

Nothing’s gonna stop me
Acid rain or fire
Touch me and you got me
In the flames of your desire

Every chance I get
I want you in the flesh
To rub you and hug you, my pet
Every chance I get

DJT is working his religious base up to a frenzy and they will not shrink from acts of violence in the Name of the Lord.

Pouring down rain again. We could end the month with nearly 9 inches of precip, pushing our yearly total to close to 43 inches. Normal for us is around 48 inches - but we’ve been above 60 the last 4 years - including 75 in 2021. The climate it are a changin’!

I am glad that the Rhine is back up up to normal levels for shipping, last year at this time several of the chokepoints were so low that ships had to run reduced loads and others could not dock properly.

From the Heather Cox Richardson article shared by retired cynic:

“For all that his talk was a heartfelt recap of his presidency, he emphasized that the key to those successes has been democratic institutions. Referring to President Bill Clinton’s secretary of state Madeleine Albright’s reference to the United States as “the essential nation,” he attributed the leadership of the United States in world affairs not to its military might or economic power, but rather to its ability to create and defend alliances and, crucially, institutions that aspire to a rules-based world that works for, rather than against, ordinary people.”

If our main purpose is to support democracies and open societies, as Biden claimed, what do we do with Israel if it becomes a full-on authoritarian state? Can we use the $4billion in aid each year as leverage to warn Bibi and his far right allies from the direction they are headed while simultaneously supporting the many Israelis who are horrified by what is going on and protesting in such great numbers? I don’t know, but these are pretty immediate concerns. I never really touch on Israel because I don’t have any answers and don’t know enough, but our relationship is under serious strains right now. Of course, if Trump wins it won’t matter since we’re already at great risk ourselves.

Granted that, but it is also home of Bin Laden and 15 of the 19 9/11 assailants, as well as a nation that actively funds and promotes the teaching of Wahabism, a politically virulent anti-US theocratic ideology-

I understand this. I know pretty well America’s record of supporting tyrants and terrorists for “national interest.” But the point Biden is making—and I think he’ll end up looking as hypocritical as anyone else—is that it’s a new world taking shape and we have to be on the side of democracy. So whether you or I or anyone else wants to deflect from the question, it’s there.

I guess the best course is to try to maintain as close a relationship as possible and to continue to hope for the best. It’s obviously a dangerous world for Israel. It’s been encouraging to see how many are protesting the current trends, esp. wrt the courts. I’m already beyond my knowledge level, so I’ll leave it there.

re: #8 Barefoot Grin

Okay, I’m being obliquely pissy so I should just say this plainly:

No, American foreign policy has never been anything like what Albright or Biden says.

We encourage democracy…when we don’t like the existing leader because they won’t give us what they want. We’re fine with various forms of autocracy as long as the leader plays ball. We like a rules-based order…except that we’re the top of the hegemonic pile and regularly just change the rules when it’s convenient, and just don’t enforce rules when that fucks with the money. Hence our deep friendship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

et cetera, et cetera

Our relationship with the KSA is just the synedoche for what we actually do in foreign policy: what we overlook, who we’ll sell guns to, how our CIA operations keep propping up dictators that eventually screw us over, how our short Red Scare reflexes make us hand power to reactionaries, how comfortbale we are with mass killing as long as it’s anti-Communist, et cetera, et cetera.

Don’t look too closely at Central America, for example…

In High School going into my senior year (1981-82) I had 2 students come in, on in my class, one in a later class. They were refugees from Nicaragua. I learned from talking with them that both had fought for the Sandinistas (their descriptions of Galil and FAL rifles were not the kind of thing that kids who had not used them would know …)

Later that year I took a college level econ course at the local Uni. The prof turned out to be their father. He’d been educated in the US and then went back to Nicaragua and worked for the Samosa government. Soon enough they decided he was a Commie and he was forced to flee to Florida. His family stayed behind and that’s when the boys fought with the Sandinistas. After they’d forced Samosa to flee, he returned and went to work for the Revolutionary government. Sure enough, shortly thereafter he had to flee again (this time with his family) because now he was too conservative for the government. As his student, I’ll simply say that at least the Sandinistas were more correct as the Supply Side loving prof was not very lefty. We had several very long and detailed discussions in class going into the differences between classical Smith, Keynes & Marxian analysis and how they applied in Reagan’s America. Most of the other students were seriously lost. This was a 101 level course :D Needless to say, he and I did _not_ agree! LOL! OTOH, I give him great props that he gave me an A in the course despite our disagreements because I knew my shit.

Less than 6 months later I was wearing Uncle’s green and taking the President’s dollar… Irony is a much more delicious dish than vengeance could ever hope to be.

The political action committee that former President Donald Trump is using to pay his legal bills faced such staggering costs this year that it requested a refund on a $60 million contribution it made to another group supporting the Republican front-runner,” the New York Times reports.

“The decision signals a potential money crisis for Mr. Trump, who has so far refused to pay his own voluminous bills directly and has also avoided creating a legal-defense fund for himself and people who have become entangled in the various investigations related to him.”

These people are idiots.

Donald Trump called on congressional Republicans to withhold military support for Ukraine until the Biden administration cooperates with their investigations into the president and his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “Congress should refuse to authorize a single additional shipment of our depleted weapons stockpiles … to Ukraine until the FBI, DOJ and IRS hand over every scrap of evidence they have on the Biden Crime Family’s corrupt business dealings.”

I still marvel at the stupid Republican voters who think that our arsenal was “empty” under Obama, completely restocked under Trump, and then miraculously depleted again in 2 years. Where exactly do they think it all went? And how much do they think the budget was cut in order to accomplish this?

as I mentioned, this is nothing less than stirring up religious frenzy in the zealous base. It is gonna get ugly before it’s all over

There are several accounts with similar names that post cat pictures, and seem to be bots. They auto-follow everyone. Some people think they may be crypto-scammers or some other type of scammer trying to quickly build a large follower list.

So be careful with those. I actually blocked them myself.

DJT is working his religious base up to a frenzy and they will not shrink from acts of violence in the Name of the Lord.

Law enforcement needs to be prepared to handle them as domestic terrorists then. That’s exactly what they are.

Reminds me of how a ship near Myrtle Beach goes on “cruises” into international waters in order to facilitate gambling. Make a law and people will still find a way.

William F Buckley wrote a whole column about how he sailed on a yacht out past the 3-mile limit to smoke some pot without breaking American laws. (no mention how the pot happened to be on the yacht in the first place, which obviously sailed from an American port).

I fell in love with the daylilies of Paul Owen. He bred huge flowers (dinnerplate size) on really strong scapes and incredible colors.Plus he also bred not only for the flowers but for really nice green leaves. Since they are around longer than the flowers, it was really eye-opening to see. I had just discovered him when he sold his farm and moved to Panama! So I bought a lot of his last year and am seeing some great blooms this year, even though it often takes a few years to get great ones. Here is one of my favorites, Hotta Pinkie.

Hotta Pinkie daylily

I have had these for a few years. Great double pink with wonderful edges.

Dublin Elaine daylily

This is Autumn Minaret. Originally bred in 1951 by Stout, the Godfather of the modern daylily. It is the tallest one with scapes here over 5 feet high. 5 feet!!

Thanks. You can thank the pandemic for this. I just focussed on daylilies and bought a ton. Should have started years ago because they are so much fun for only a little work. At least in the Pacific NW.

The Pacific NW is a great place for Daylilies. More Southern regions have problems with rust that can damage the plants. We just recently have seen the daylily gall midge move down from Canada that was a huge problem for me last year. But I found an organic pesticide that did great.

Now I have to get started on repotting a ton of them. Not as much fun.

I think I just found a bug in Google Draw.

When I use 𝕏 in a text box, and make it very large, like 400 point, it looks fine in the app.

But when I download it as a .jpg or .png file… Google Draw changes the font to something with serifs.

How odd.

I know that wrt heat this is true. Growing up in Houston my brother and I would go out to play tennis at noon in <90° weather. As long as we made sure we had lots to drink (Used iced tea saturated with sugar) we could play for hours. I used to run 6 miles during lunch because no one else was ;-) Granted it was under the trees but still hot.

Now in the Pacific NW, if it gets to 80° I am beat (I am older but still).

I think I would use Bluesky more if there was a Blueskydeck that worked like the old Tweetdeck. I just don’t see the point of being on Bluesky and Mastodon.

I’m wait and see while on mastodon & bluesky.

Meanwhile my locked down X account is still locked down and only displaying “following”, while I ignore “for you.”
