Jesus fuckin’ christ I was busy today. Meetings from 7:30 to almost noon, and multiple people pinging me for help throughout that process. Finally got a break around 12:30 to pick up meat and veg for making the dog food for the week, and then spent an hour learning about terraform as it’s about to become part of my daily life in the coming weeks so I might as well spend a few hours getting familiar with it.

Now I just need to get dinner prepped and watch some baseball.

I’ve spent several years crafting a position where I could be seen as effective and productive while doing as little as possible. Suddenly I have a bunch of tasks that actually require spending a few hours focused on completing them. No likey. No likey at all. I’m much better at delegating.

I hate commenting on this ugly war, precisely because my point of view is not represented much of anywhere, but here goes.

It’s disgusting that Hamas committed these atrocities, and people on the Left are giving them a pass, or worse, openly rooting for them. These were civilians living their lives. They didn’t deserve violence. Anyone who can’t admit this basic truth is morally bankrupt.

That said, the Israeli government has not worked for peace in good faith for at least 30 years. Netanyahu is a corrupt and violent thug who is using this attack to murder other innocent people. These victims cannot flee; they have nowhere to run. They are starving, they have no medical care, and their homes are being demolished by bombs and bullets. This too is disgusting.

I wish this horrific carnage would end. I wish people would use this moment to force through a peace deal. And I wish people would stop using it as a way to justify bigotry.

Super cool. Just the coolest. Just the most responsible kind of levelheaded thank-god-there’s-an-adult-in-charge scenario type shit you really want to hear an Israeli PM saying right now:

Invoking the name of the biblical enemy of the Jews, Netanyahu added, “We will not allow it… We will never forget and always stand guard,” reasserting the right of the Jewish people to self-defense amid increasing concern over the Iranian threat.

“Remember what Amalek did to you,” cautioned Netanyahu, quoting a passage from Deuteronomy.

Context:

17Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. 18When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God. 19When the Lord your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land he is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget! -Deuterotomy 25, 17-19

1Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord. 2This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy a all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’ ” -1 Samuel 15, 1-3

JFC Hamas has ruled Gaza since 2005 and they HAVE DONE NOTHING FOR THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE except to steal their resources, hoard food, fuel & water, & cannibalize their infrastructure to build fabulous underground bunkers for themselves.

As for the peace process, Arafat trashed the last 3 attempts.

Tell me please how Israel is supposed to respond to the people who committed the 10/7 massacre. They can’t drop bombs and they can’t send their army into Gaza, or interfere in any way with their power, water, electricity & internet access. So what are they supposed to do get their hostages back? Just pay whatever ransom is demanded?

Cool but he’s quoting Deuteronomy, “Remember what Amalek did to you,” about a foundational myth in which Biblical Israel was commanded by God to perform a total genocidal curettage of an enemy tribal land, to destroy everything that lived. He’s doing that in the context of a war where the IDF has now likely dropped 15 Kilotons and counting worth of ordnance on an incredibly dense city, targeting that ordnance with the same intel capabilities you just admitted “he fucked up on.”

I don’t know how anybody looks at that and thinks he’s not very deliberately committing crimes against humanity.

As an American Jew, I look at what Hamas did to the kibbutzniks (my wife spent time at Nir Oz in the 80s) and shudder and weep at the suffering - but as an American Reform Jew, I also look at the suffering of the Gazans and weep for them.

Some QFT here…I’m a run-o-the-mill atheist and *anyone* quoting sectarian tracts to justify harming $OTHER are fucking psychopaths. That includes Hamas, but this tract from Bibi quoting Deuteronomy is particularly vile.

Side note…a little bit later in the OT, the ‘eye for an eye’ mentioned in Exodus is meant to *reduce* the collateral damage of tribe-on-tribe violence. Seems like modern $DIETYWORSHIP tends to miss that one.

“Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.”
-Gray’s Law

Here’s my problem, I’m not conspiracy minded enough to think Netanyahu’s government let the October 7th attack happen on purpose in order to get a war they wanted. But I also don’t think the situation would look very different or be any less in line with their long term desires if it had played out that way. They deliberately funded and bolstered Hamas as a foil to Fatah, to divide Palestinians politically and make peace impossible, to destroy any chance of a two state solution. Bibi is on record stating this was Likud’s policy. Then he focused on expanding the illegal settlements in the West Bank to further make it clear he had no interest in peace and only promised further encroachment and de facto annexation of Palestinian land.

Along the way he got indicted for a bunch of flagrant corruption and got his coalition to basically overthrow Israel’s entire legal system with a judicial reform package that was so unpopular it resulted in the largest civil protests in modern Israeli history. He was warned repeatedly by the IDF that his reforms were doing so much damage to morale that it was endangering national security. Did he listen? No, he flipped the script and accused the IDF of playing politics.

Then he turned Israel’s back on Gaza and Hamas attacked, succeeding beyond all expectations and catching Israel completely off guard because the IDF’s predictions proved true.

So again, I don’t think this is what Netanyahu wanted, but what’s genuinely disturbing is would it look any different if it was his plan all along? And since it wasn’t why is he being rewarded politically for his failure? Are we supposed to believe that a man prone to dropping biblical quotes about Amalek is truly at his core incapable of sacrificing some of his own people’s lives to secure his long term demographic eliminationist goals? And does it actually matter if he is or isn’t that cynical of a person when he’s being rewarded as if he is with an opportunity to enact his stated long term vision?

85 years ago tonight Dad was in a CCC camp in Culpepper Virginia listening to Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy on the radio when a bunch of boys burst in to say that we were being invaded by Martians and they landed in New Jersey…

The city in Virginia is spelled Culpeper, but pronounced the same way as the conventional spelling. Yeah, I know, weird, right? My eighth grade US history teacher’s last name was also spelled that unusual way.

I have no idea how to fix anything in the Middle East.

I think I know how not to fix it, though, and that’s to keep spilling blood for blood for blood.

As an American Jew, I look at what Hamas did to the kibbutzniks (my wife spent time at Nir Oz in the 80s) and shudder and weep at the suffering - but as an American Reform Jew, I also look at the suffering of the Gazans and weep for them.

Yeah, basically this.

I think you will find that most Lizards agree with you. This is a wanking contest between Hamas and Bibi.

Nobody can win this fight. It’s impossible to wipe out Hamas, others will step up to fill available posts.

So Israel must…

Originally Pittsburgh had only on VHF station WDTV Channel 3 and it was the DuMont Network. there was a UHF station in the 50s that carried CBS shows but it didn’t last long. DuMont sold their station to Westinghouse and renamed it KDKA and shifted it to channel 2 in 1955 on the CBS Network. WIIC Channel 11 came on the air in 1956 and was an NBC affiliate. WTAE 4 came on the air in 1959 and it carried ABC. There were stations in Wheeling and Youngstown that carried both CBS and ABC shows.

TV was a lot more fun when there were only 2 or 3 stations you could get.

There was the local NBC affiliate - WEAU 13. As long as the weather wasn’t vile, we were located in a good position for our antenna to pick up WKBT 8 - CBS - out of La Crosse, WI. And then in the late 60’s PBS started on UHF 28. The reception was always poor but Sesame Street in the mornings and later, Dr Who & Blakes 7 at night made putting up with the occasional snow storm worth it. WQOW -18 didn’t come in until 1980.

Regrettably, the simple truth is that if either side in a conflict truly wants war, there can be no peace, unless one side is basically wiped out. That’s obviously the long term plan of the Israeli hard right, and Hamas et al. play along because they need endless conflict for their own political purposes.

In the 1950s TV in central FL was broadcast by 2 then 3 Tampa stations. From time to time a station would lose their network feed or maybe the network would lose their source, and “please stand by”.

That’s not fertility, that is fecundity. It’s a bulkshit graph regardless of the words, though.

Yeah, it’s lovely how these guys have absolutely zero problem in commandeering women’s bodies for their schemes without bothering to get our consent or simply insisting they know best. They’re not the only ones.

Just after I got to Boston last Wednesday, I took a cab over to MIT because the person I was visiting was going to a talk there regarding “longtermism,” which is a part of the cluster of ideas / ideologies around “effective altruism” (which, if you heard about it, probably came from Sam Bankman-Fried claiming to be an adherent). To be honest, these ideologies are *very* complex, and I don’t even begin to fully understand it, but it’s part of a utilitarian “greatest good for the greatest number.” But what got me is that when you boil down the arguments, it works out in part to a “we need more people” belief. And, as I told the speaker during the Q&A period, “yet again women are being told that our bodies are being volunteered—without our consent—because the only way human beings get here today is through bodily birth.” He didn’t disagree.

All these people—guys mostly—with their high and mighty ideas about the future that involve commandeering the bodies of women and girls. Yay, patriarchy!

re: #123 mmmirele

I was reading a bit on Effective Altruism, and it’s pretty repugnant. The textbook example is a man in a very expensive suit sees a baby drowning; according to EA, the only moral action for him to take is to let the baby drown then sell his suit and donate the money to charity. It’s all about maximizing short term suffering with the vague intent to minimize long term suffering.

Used Google to answer my question of downstairs — the word assimilate does not appear in the Torah or the Christian Bible. So is there anywhere the Books refer to a concept equivalent to requiring the stranger to be assimilated? Didn’t think that the Borg made an appearance in our Holy Scriptures.

A guest in your house can be asked to obey the rules of your house (that means adapting, not assimilating) but the main thing is that the Bible wants us to welcome strangers.

To be honest, these ideologies are *very* complex, and I don’t even begin to fully understand it, but it’s part of a utilitarian “greatest good for the greatest number.”

My understanding of it is…

The plague killed about half of Europe. Terrible horrible suffering for a couple of generations, would have been a miserable thing to be there then. But it set the stage for the Renaissance and all the progress that happened after.

From our perspective in our time, we can see very clearly that 100 years after, Europe was definitely better off for it having happened. “Longtermism” is if somebody the year before the plague started, advocated for it because of how it would work out eventually.

For your Halloween viewing pleasure, today we have The Earth Dies Screaming, a 1964 British sci-fi/horror film, starring Willard Parker, Virginia Field and Dennis Price. Screenplay by Harry Spalding (using his occasional nom de plume of “Henry Cross” ) and directed by Terence Fisher.

Professor Peter Dendle of Penn State Mont Alto once cited this film as “an obvious precursor to Night of the Living Dead”.

‘DeSantis is wearing lifts — there is no doubt’

Gosh is he also sticking a sock in his jock?

Is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis trying to make himself artificially look taller by wearing height-boosting boots?

Intrepid Politico reporter Derek Guy this week talked with three footwear experts and they all agreed that DeSantis is wearing lifts.

Graham Ebner, an Austin, Texas-based cowboy bootmaker, tells Politico that he spots three giveaways in determining that DeSantis is likely wearing lifts: “The instep, the toe spring and where the ball of his foot is sitting in the boots.”Ebner argues that the instep on DeSantis’ boots appears particularly steep, and he says that “instead of the leather hugging the inside arch of his foot, as it should, it looks like his foot is being lifted up and stretching out the leather.”

Zephan Parker, the bootmaker at the Houston, Texas-based Parker Boot Company, bluntly tells Politico that “[DeSantis] is wearing lifts; there’s no doubt.”

Parker points to the size of the heels on DeSantis’ boots as a dead giveaway that the Florida governor is wearing boosters.

Additionally, Parker sees something off with the boots’ tops.

“Cowboy boots are made to fit snugly,” explains Guy. “But such a snug fit leaves little room for a wedge-shaped lift, so people who wear lifts often have to size up in width. This increases all the other measurements in tandem, including the circumference of the tops.”

The DeSantis campaign fired back at its reporting on the governor’s footwear and said that “the governor doesn’t pad his boots, but if he ever needed anything to line a pet cage or fold up and wedge under a table leg, that would be the highest and best use for Politico Magazine.”

You may have seen my brother and I on TV in the 1950s, Joe: “Randy & Terry, Brothers in Balance.” We were on national TV about 20 times between 1954 and 1960 doing acrobatics.

Kidfluencers are today’s version of chimney sweeps

Enter the state of Illinois, where a recently passed law gives successful child social media stars a right to some percentage of the earnings they generate, to be held in a trust in their name until they turn 18. Such legislation has precedent. In the early days of Hollywood, California passed the Coogan Law, which gives child actors a right to a certain percentage of earnings, which employers have to place in trust accounts. New York has passed similar legislation.

Personally I like it fine, it’s just old style - you have to cut and paste to share, it’s not frictionless.

Indeed, the only reason ex-twitter still has any traffic at all is due to Old Twitter’s ubiquitous & frictionless sharing API that Elon has destroyed.

Without that “easy-squeezy” lazy man’s bird button on every site you visit, & every website under the sun accommodating their embeds, they would have less traffic than myspace…

Another Republican does the Boys In The Hoods & Bedsheets thing and gets caught.

GOP chief who said Black people belonged in Wakanda and women should make sandwiches quits

The executive director of the North Dakota Republican Party has resigned after less than two weeks on the job following controversy over a series of social media posts denigrating women and Black people, reported KFYR TV on Tuesday.

“I believe the best path forward for the NDGOP is for me to take a different path,” said Dave Roetman in a brief statement announcing his resignation. “I wish them all the best.”

This comes after extensive reporting at The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead documenting Roetman’s controversial escapades on X.

According to reporter Rob Port, Roetman made “dozens and dozens of ignorant social media posts,” including comments leering at scantily clad or undressed women; jokes about women making sandwiches; and a suggestion that Black people should get out of America and move to Wakanda, the fictional East African kingdom that was the setting for Black Panther.

When the original story broke, Roetman refused to apologize, telling Port, “I am a man who stands by his words.”

Generally, state party chairs are content to work behind the scenes out of sight, but are sometimes the focus of colorful scandals. In 2021, former Minnesota GOP director Jennifer Carnahan stepped down amid allegations the organization was full of sexual harassment and bullying, including one of her close associates and party donors being arrested for sex trafficking.

What little I’ve looked at about EA has me thinking of it as Objectivism Mk II: Lipstick and the Smiley Face button from Watchmen (the one with the bullet hole) on a picture of Ayn Rand. The metaphor is as ugly as the philosophy. I’ll stick to my Michael Harrington influenced Democratic Socialism, thankyewverymuch.

What I came out of the talk and discussion with (besides the observation about how womens’ and girls’ bodies are being co-opted yet again) was that I’d much rather wrestle with the ideologies that were inculcated in me over the years rather than *this*.

Interesting - Marketing and other agitprop agents are out there using kids to influence kids. I’m sure there are a few “Joe Rogan mold” parents out there too…

Kidfluencers are today’s version of chimney sweeps

This is absolutely needed as kids are being exploited. Or worse. I believe I may have mentioned the 8 Passengers YT channel, the Franke family, parents and their six kids. The channel had over 2 million subscribers at one point. The parents were very strict with their kids. Example: the oldest son told a younger brother they were going to Disneyland as a trick. (They weren’t going.) He was punished by having his bed and bedroom taken away from him for seven months. Another time, the youngest daughter, aged five or six, forgot to make and take her lunch to school, and her teacher sent a text to mom asking if she would bring lunch. Mom is on video saying she wouldn’t because daughter needed to learn to do her stuff.

More recently, the mother (Ruby Franke) and her business partner (in some sort of family “counseling” outfit) Jodi Hildebrandt, were arrested and charged with six counts of child abuse. The two youngest children were being held at Hildebrandt’s house in Ivins, UT, a few hundred miles from the family home in Springville, UT. The youngest boy, aged 12, escaped from the house and went over to a neighbor’s house (not easy, as the houses are expensive and spread apart in this area). The boy had duct tape around his wrists and ankles, rope burns and was emaciated. The man at the home the Franke boy went to all but broke down crying when talking to the 911 dispatcher about the child’s condition. The youngest daughter was found in similar condition when the police raided the home. Mom and Jodi were arrested shortly thereafter, two months ago.

abc4.com (initial article, there have been many, many since)

My *point* is that these children were exploited by their parents and likely abused for years before one of the children got to a neighbor. And YT, by allowing this stuff, and paying the parents, is complicit. Yeah, this is harsh, but this is not the only family where there has been bad results from internet fame.

Having Ivanka testify will screw Trump even further, because the only reason that she’s not on trial with Trump is that the SOL ran against her, but was tolled against him.

The framed art on the wall of a micro-office is odd as well.

With that tiny monitor and thin desk, that does not look like a real workspace. It’s a set, like Tucker Carlson’s workshop.

does that affect her ability to take the fifth?

She’s still subject to criminal prosecution for those acts she has knowledge of and which relates to her own criminal malfeasance. If prosecutors ask about something for which the SOL didn’t already run, she could face criminal liability - so the 5th is a consideration for her to keep in mind.

i expect it’s gonna be a lot more than taking the fifth (which would be damaging enough) and ‘i dont recall’.

that may be how some of the general questioning goes - ie were you in the room when…

it’s not gonna fly when they’re asked about the duties and responsibilities of an officer. did they accept the role voluntarily, etc.

overall though, it’s a well documented case and they’re gonna be handed…documents

is this your signature?

If Trump’s and her attorneys their job, that will be covered in the direct & cross prep.

It’s important that in front of the jury judge your witness not freeze or hesitate before answering a “smoking gun question.”

It’s better for her to expect such a question and a prepared answer without hesitation.

It’s true as a prosecution witness she can only be asked yes or no questions.

Under cross she can elaborate how her yes or no answer might not be so black or white.

It will be interesting how this plays out.

Ivanka Trump isn’t just a fraud witness, she was a fraud participant.

“…With that, the two Trumps were tag-teaming a pitch about how much the golf resort was worth. Forbes had valued it at $225 million before debt, which the Trumps deemed far too low. “We’ll make $75 million this year,” Donald Trump said, even though the property would actually earn $14 million that year.

“150,000 square feet of meeting space,” added Ivanka, opting to use a bigger figure than the ones listed in the Trump Organization’s own materials (which said the property included “over 90,000 square feet of meeting space”) and her not-yet-published book (which claimed “a hundred thousand square feet of meeting space”).

This comes after extensive reporting at The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead documenting Roetman’s controversial escapades on X.

According to reporter Rob Port, Roetman made “dozens and dozens of ignorant social media posts,” including comments leering at scantily clad or undressed women; jokes about women making sandwiches; and a suggestion that Black people should get out of America and move to Wakanda, the fictional East African kingdom that was the setting for Black Panther.

rawstory.com

Wow, oh, wow - the NDGOP must absolutely hate the Fargo Forum. I’m surprised they haven’t made it a crime to be named “Rob Port”. He’s been a part of the team that brought forward stories about former NDGOP state senator Ray Holmberg
(sex crimes) and NDGOP state rep Brandon Prichard (serial liar and bigot).

Complex where I live did their “trunk or treat” last Thursday for some reason. Not sure why unless there is some other local event in the township they wanted to leave the time free for. Or, possibly, they wanted their staff to have the evening free to spend it with their families.

Yeah, Youngstown is our “local” station here in NW PA where I am. We are about 40 miles NE of them. They are pretty good about playing news from both sides of the border.
