Oh, I made it back from Outreach with a single surviving slice of the coveted coconut meringue pie, as well as a less desirable, but still whole mincemeat pie. We also had the usual turkey, ham, and barbecue brisket. The latter was the most popular. Traditional southern-church green bean caserole was praised for its absence. We also had some ingenious jello dishes including my favorite, the lime/pineapple/ marshmallow concoction (forgot the name) that my grandmother used to make.

As far as I know, there are no rumblings coming from Mt. Fuji in Japan, and the last eruption was in 1707, but it’s not like the government hasn’t been thinking about how awful an eruption would be.

TOKYO — When Mount Fuji erupted in 1707, volcanic ash fell for two weeks on the city of Edo, which is part of present-day Tokyo. What would be the worst-case scenario if there is a similar eruption in the future?

According to internal government data on eruption countermeasures obtained by the Mainichi Shimbun, the number of roads blocked by the ashfall increased daily, and it was estimated that by two weeks later, supplies may not reach approximately 60% of the roughly 44.33 million residents of the Tokyo metropolitan area.

For the estimation, the government assumed that multiple major eruptions would occur, similar to the Hoei eruption in 1707, and that volcanic ash would fall in stages for about two weeks in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Chiba and other prefectures. At a closed-door study session involving relevant ministries and agencies as well as experts, documents showing the results of the calculations were distributed, and specific countermeasures were discussed.

According to the documents, by about two weeks after the eruption, it was estimated that about 27 million residents would be unable to receive supplies because vehicles would be unable to pass due to ash that had accumulated on roads, and some 36 million people would suffer electricity outages caused by the ash that had fallen on power lines.

And from earlier this year, an editorial discussing the revised plans of the Yamanashi, Shizuoka and Kanagawa prefectures to basically have people (including tourists) walk out to safety (aka away from the mountain) because using cars (previous plan) would just cause clogged roads.

I’m thinking an eruption of Mt. Fuji could have much more serious effects on Japan than another major earthquake.

That’s it. Looks odd but it’s really good. It also has whipped topping (real whipped cream won’t work), sour cream, and nuts, usually pecans. The marshmallows serve as a binder. it’s also easy to make.

In a large bowl, mix together gelatin, whipped topping, pineapple with juice, sour cream, marshmallows, and pecans. Cover and chill in refrigerator for at least 1 hour. Serve cold.

New York City mayor Eric Adams accused of sexual assault in 1993

Summons accuses Adams of sexual assault and employment discrimination in 1993 while he and plaintiff worked for the city

The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, has been accused of sexual assault in a court filing submitted on late Wednesday.

The summons against Adams alleges that the plaintiff “was sexually assaulted by Defendant Eric Adams in New York, New York in 1993 while they both worked for the City of New York”.

It was filed under the Adult Survivors Act, a New York state law which provided a one-year “look-back” window for adult sexual misconduct accusers to file civil lawsuits that previously would have been barred due to the statute of limitations.

The window expires on 24 November.

I set an Uber black to pick up the MIL for dinner and because she’s old and slow the driver cancelled the ride before she got downstairs. So I had to drive a half hour to pick her up which is fine because I subjected her to the grateful dead which triggered a conversation about improvisation music.

Apparently the driver told her she took too long and he couldn’t uncancel. I’m still pissed about that.

So there are now a plethora of “AI” video tools. Yesterday I tried out Invideo.

Here is the first video it created. All I asked it to do was make a short video about countering the claims of Christian apologists, use a male voice, and quiet music. It did all the rest, including writing the script:

Break Free

..

Not bad. There is that annoying “uh” at the beginning of the second line of speech.

I’ll probably go back and edit the script to take that out.

And I’ll tell Invideo to use an older voice.

The “AI” video creation machines are getting more impressive.

By this time next year I expect Youtube to be flooded with such videos.

And I’m pretty confident that I could get one of these machines to make a video that looks enough like a TV new report that it could fool the unwary and naive.

These tools will be great in the hands of the conmen. One can pump out all sorts of conspiracy nonsense that look like real productions from real media.

I have swam off of Race Point in Provincetown Massachusetts during August and it is a tad chilly, I couldn’t imagine doing it in November. Pro-tip, don’t dive in head first, you may get a vagal response (I think this is the right terminology) I found out the hard way diving into Lake George during Memorial weekend.

President Biden and his son Hunter Biden were among the members of the first family that went for a Thanksgiving swim in the frigid waters off Nantucket Thursday.

“Annual Biden fam polar bear plunge. Happy Thanksgiving!” Naomi Biden, the 81-year-old president’s granddaughter, wrote in an X post.

Naomi included a photo that showed some members of the Biden clan wrapped in towels and standing on a rocky beach after their chilly Turkey Day dip.

Water temperatures in the Nantucket Sound were a bitter 48 F Thursday afternoon.

Joe has famously spent nearly every Thanksgiving on the island since 1975.

During his time as vice president, Joe and his grandkids would frequently take part in Nantucket’s annual Cold Turkey Plunge, a charity event where participants race into the icy salt water and hurry back to shore.

Their Standard Operating Procedure is still in effect…

Facing lawsuits, Archdiocese of DC challenges law empowering abuse survivors

friendlyatheist.com

More than a month after a Maryland law eliminated the statute of limitations for survivors of child sexual abuse, the Archdiocese of Washington (D.C.) is arguing in court that the law is illegal.

The law in question capped how much money a survivor could receive—based on whether they were suing a public institution, a private one, or an individual—but it allowed those who had suffered abuse decades earlier to receive justice.

Just before the law went into effect, the Archdiocese of Baltimore declared bankruptcy, a move that would allow certain parts of the Church to continue functioning while limiting the damages the archdiocese would inevitably face. (The move also puts an expiration date on when people could sue the Church for damages, nullifying that aspect of the new law.)

And now the Archdiocese of Washington, which is also affected by the change, is arguing in court (in two separate cases) that the new law violates the Maryland Constitution. If they’re successful with the challenge, it could halt a class-action lawsuit brought by survivors of sexual abuse.

The basic argument is that, by allowing survivors to sue their abusers long after the crimes took place, it violates due process.

It’s important to remember why the Catholic Church is trying so hard to avoid accountability. Earlier this year, Attorney General Brown released his office’s 463-page report investigating sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The four-year project, which was the result of a Grand Jury investigation, found that over 600 children (“but the number is likely far higher”) were abused by 156 predators working with the Catholic Church since the 1940s. Most of the predators were now dead, but some of them (redacted in the report) were still alive and not previously suspected of any wrongdoing. The names of Church officials who helped cover up their alleged crimes were also redacted in the public report. In many cases, the abuse continued even after survivors came forward with their stories. Because Church officials didn’t take immediate action, the predators had a green light to continue abusing little kids.

With the release of that report, and the passage of the new law, there was hope that many survivors of abuse would finally realize there was a path forward to file claims against their abusers and the institution that harbored them.

We shouldn’t be surprised that both archdioceses are doing everything they can to prevent survivors from getting the justice they deserve. They’re putting far more thought into how they can play defense than they ever did to remove the problematic Catholic leaders in the first place.

I’ve said this before, but the true punishment for the Church won’t come from any of the lawsuits. The institution will only suffer if and when there’s a mass exodus of worshipers who call themselves Catholic. The people who still attend or support the Catholic Church with their time or money are complicit in their actions. It’s not too late to break ties. Tradition is no excuse to prop up a criminal enterprise.

And remember that there are five radical Catholics on the corrupted Supreme Court who just can’t wait to strike this law down.

I await the alien invasion video. It will be grand!

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hamas on Friday released a group of hostages held captive in Gaza for weeks, including 13 Israelis, according to officials and media reports, the first stage in a swap for Palestinians prisoners in Israel under a four-day cease-fire deal.

The agreement brought the first respite for beleaguered residents of Gaza and opened the way for sorely needed aid to flow in. It was also a moment of hope for families in Israel and elsewhere worried about loved ones taken captive during Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, which triggered the war. Also freed were 12 Thai citizens abducted during the assault, their prime minister said.

Former Obama administration adviser and State Department official Stuart Seldowitz has been arrested and charged for allegedly harassing a food cart vendor in New York City.

In videos posted online, Seldowitz is heard berating the vendor about his Islamic faith and Egyptian roots.

Seldowitz, 64, was charged with aggravated harassment, hate crime and two counts of stalking. They are all misdemeanor charges, according to the New York Police Department.

He was booked Wednesday night and his attorney was not present.

Seldowitz was granted supervised release on Thursday, according to New York ABC station WABC. He is not to have any contact with the food cart vendors.

In one video, Seldowitz calls the Egyptian halal food cart worker a “terrorist” and a “terrible person.”

“If we killed 4,000 Palestinian children, you know what, it wasn’t enough,” Seldowitz can be heard saying.

The vendor can be heard repeatedly asking Seldowitz to leave.

“A 24 year-old male victim stated to police that an individual approached him at his work place multiple times and made anti-Islamic statements multiple times on different dates causing the victim to feel afraid and annoyed,” the NYPD said in a statement.

I am 1/8th Irish (my 5x maternal grandfather was born in Donegal in 1745).

The violence in Dublin began in response to reports of a knife attack in Dublin that injured four people, three of which are children.

I saw rumors bandied about on Elon’s Groyper Playground that the attacker was a foreign national (I’ve seen claims that he is Algerian), but in fact, Irish authorities believe he is an Irish citizen who has lived in the country for 20 years.

This is merely a day after right wingers on the aforementioned Groyper Playground jumped to the conclusion that the car wreck on the Rainbow Bridge was a terrorist attack.

I am very worried that what happened in Dublin could will happen here, thanks in large part to what Elon has done, and to the climate we live in thanks to Trump (especially if Trump wins next year).

My wife and I are talking about leaving the US if Trump wins. I know that sounds alarmist, and hopefully it’s just our collective anxiety momentarily getting the best of our common sense and judgment, but I have never seen a political climate in this country like this in my 60 years trodding upon it.

Jonathan Pollard wants to remind everyone that he’s a maniac.

Jonathan Pollard, a former US intelligence analyst imprisoned for spying for Israel, has called for hostages’ families to be silenced and arrested.

Pollard told Israeli media that the families of Israeli hostages should have been jailed to shut them up. He also said posters of the captives should never have been hung up.

“When Israel declared war, the first thing that the government should have done was declare a state of national emergency and told all the hostages: ‘You will keep your mouth shut or we will shut them for you,’” Pollard said.

He said the Israeli government should have prevented the hostages’ families from “interfering” with their management of this war.

He implied that the hostages’ families were being “used by the international community” or “by our own leftists” as a weapon against the Israeli government.

“If that means imprisoning to silence certain members of the hostage families, then so be it — we’re in a state of war.”

The hostages’ families should have been jailed to shut them up, says former US citizen who was an Israeli spy (BI)
