A Shiprock sunrise.

The long dike cuts vertically across the landscape, preventing the low-angle sunlight from falling upon the land to its west for several minutes. Always a remarkable scene.

For anybody who’s never heard of him, Gonzalo Lira is a pro-Putin propagandist who has produced numerous videos parroting Kremlin BS, such as declaring that people are freezing to death in the UK because they can’t get Russian oil. He’s also been caught using his videos to broadcast the identities of Ukrainian soldiers and the location of AFU AA batteries. And if you should run into someone who says that the Ukrainian government is holding him as a “political prisoner,” inform them that the only reason they were able to arrest him at all is because he snuck back into the country after being deported.

I was confused by the bit about Lira and Hungary because last I’d heard, the prick had been arrested back in the spring and I’d assumed he’d been cooling his heels in a jail cell ever since. Turns out he managed to swing pre-trial house arrest, only to get caught trying to jump bail by riding his mothercycle to Hungary. He was arrested at the border, had new charges slapped on him for his troubles, and has been awaiting trial ever since. So, for those taking notes at home, this “tyrannical regime”:

- Arrested him for the same crimes last year, but instead of imprisoning or executing him simply yanked his visa and booted his ass out.

- Arrested him again for entering the country in violation of the deportation order instead of summarily executing him.

- Despite the lengthy list of charges and the fact that he’s generally a scumbag, he was released to his villa in Kharkiv on house arrest to await his trial date.

- Arrested him a third time trying to jump bail by leaving the country instead of (again) summarily executing him.

- At not time did they try to chop him up with a bone saw and claim his death was due to a “fight” that he instigated while “drunk.”

- Are not trying to turn his arrest and impending imprisonment as some sort of embarrassment for President Biden or the US government, which might otherwise explain why he’s being given such fair treatment by a “tyrannical regime.”

As corrupt as they are, the Calvinball Court has shown zero interest in materially helping Donald J. Trump in any way. If there is one thing I feel reasonably sure of with those fickle fuckers, it’s that they won’t lift a finger in support of his attempted autocracy. UCKG: Church pastor tells boy ‘evil spirit’ hides in him

A Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) pastor was seen reciting what looked like so-called “strong prayers” to rid the boy of a demon.

BBC Panorama was also told by a gay ex-member he was given “strong prayers” at 13 to try to make him straight.

The UCKG says under-18s are not allowed into “strong prayers” services and it does not perform “conversion therapy”.

A BBC Panorama investigation has found:

- The church tells its congregations it can help with mental health conditions by casting out evil spirits
- The leader of the church in the UK describes epilepsy as a “spiritual problem”

re: #49 Randall Gross

Crime is falling based on statistics and facts. Media coverage of crime continues at same pace as always - if it bleeds, it leads. It’s easy for media outlets to cover crime stories - law enforcement has PR people who put out pressers and press statements often used verbatim for news reports. It’s an entire industry that allows news to do almost no legwork, while filling their news broadcasts with reports of crime, which remains out of context from the actual crime rates.

NYC news is particularly awful in this respect. People think crime is out of control, despite fact that crime is down from just a few years ago, let alone the 1970s-1980s, when you could see 2000 homicides in a year. This past year? 438. Homicides are down 8% from last year on YTD basis.

The NYPD puts out crime stats, comparing YTD to past year, 2 years ago, 10 years, and even the 1990s.

Too much nuance for the shouting match that current political discourse has become.

On the Internet, there exist only two possibilities:

If you express any sympathy or understanding for the plight of Palestinians, you are an Islamist/Anti-Semite

If you condemn Hamas attacks on unarmed civilians, you are an Islamophobe/Zionist.

The point of it all is to make you feel uncofortable reacting as a normal, compassionate human being would react. This in the hopes of drawing you closer to one or an other extreme, where you feel more at home with those who share your views on who deserves to be eradicated.

Poland’s prime minister lost a vote of confidence on Monday, clearing the way for a broad coalition of pro-European Union parties led by Donald Tusk to take power.

The vote effectively ends eight years of rule by the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, which critics say undermined judicial independence, turned state-owned media into a propaganda outlet and fomented prejudice against minorities such as immigrants and the LGBT community.

Tusk, a former European Council president, has vowed to mend Warsaw’s relations with Brussels and unblock billions in funds earmarked for Poland which have been withheld due to concerns over the rule of law.

Of 456 members of parliament who voted, 266 voted that they had no confidence in Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. He had the support of 190 lawmakers.

Sticking with the Pieta, but there is some great 19th Cent stuff. In the Eremitani museum there is a lifesize girl, deshaiblle, sitting and reading a book. Across the gallery is a similar girl with a drawing pad. When you look over her shoulder to the pad, you can see that she is drawing the reader.

I quite agree, but it sounds like the SCOTUS case was to challenge a “conversion-therapy” ban (?) - and that presumably, the Court decided NOT to take the case (thus keeping the ban in place) (?). Which of course, prompted whinging from the wingnuts….(?)

I don’t want to click the images because I’m not going to Xitter for any reason whatsoever, but if I’m picking up the gist correctly, Thomas and Alito would hear the petition because they seem to think state governments have a First Amendment right to force other peoples’ kids to be tortured for religious reasons? That’s pretty fucked up there, boys.

The lack of participation to vote is itself a moral decision.

Not when you are in states that deliberately make it difficult to vote, especially for people of color, including purging of voting records or having too few polling locations or making voting by mail difficult or having poll taxes like in Florida.

so here’s a thought made up of several smaller thoughts

trump (actually one of ‘his’ pacs) just paid $900k for that idiot professor/accountant’s testimony

meanwhile Giuliani is in a world of financial hurt and basically has no money. he’s run out of lawyers cause he’s not paying them. since some of them are suing him for unpaid fees, no one else is gonna take him on.

estimates are he’d need maybe ‘only’ $300k for the Georgia trial. you know the RICO one. where TFG is a defendant.

tfg has already said he wont foot rudys legal bills.

see where this is going?

does rudy flip on tfg and get a sweetheart deal cause he cant afford the retainer for even a third stringer?

does tfg eat a little crow, somehow come up with the money and cover nyc’s mayor?

stay tuned.
i mean not here. i dont have a freakin clue.
just tuned in.

Here’s my shocked face:

Trump declines to testify at his fraud trial, despite claiming that he’s got the evidence proving that he didn’t engage in fraud.

The problem, of course, is that he can say whatever he wants outside the courtroom (and yeah, that includes violating the myriad gag orders on him in his various civil and criminal cases), but he has to tell the truth in court, and lying in court expands his legal jeopardy with perjury charges on top of everything else he faces.

With that said, his defense will probably rest shortly, having expended millions on expert witnesses who were paid to say what they did, and doesn’t overcome the fact that Trump and his family had fiduciary responsibility to submit number that were not invented out of thin air.

More grim news on the ol’ dead mall front…

Mall landlord PREIT has filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in three years as it struggles to cope with a retail property landscape disrupted by the pandemic, saying it has arranged financing and is reorganizing to reduce its overall indebtedness by about $880 million.

Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust said on Monday it has a prepackaged plan supported by 100% of its first and second lien lenders. The Philadelphia-based real estate investment trust had about $1.1 billion in debt due on Sunday, and in November warned that it would not be able to make those payments. PREIT owns and operates more than 18.3 million square feet of retail space in eight states across the eastern United States, with 23 retail properties including the Springfield Town Center in Virginia just south of Washington, D.C.

For the proposed restructuring, PREIT has received commitments for new money debtor-in-possession and exit-revolver financing in an aggregate amount of roughly $135 million from a diverse group of investors led by Redwood Capital Management and Nut Tree Capital Management. That plan will “reduce its total indebtedness by approximately $880 million,” according to PREIT.

There’s three main malls in Ostrava, and all of them are thriving post-pandemic. One of them, Futurum (the first American-style mall in Ostrava) has actually bounced back. Prior to the pandemic, it was definitely a dying mall. From what I’ve heard, a new management team took over and successfully turned it around.

Yes, I know that Trump’s “immunity defense” is bullshit, and based mainly on his own megalomania, with little/no regard for actual law - BUT: given that the current SCOTUS is beholden to its (biased, partisan, ideologue) Asshole Bloc, the downside here (AFAICT) is that said Bloc*
might issue a one-off Opinion (a la Bush v. Gore), ruling that Donald Trump was/is legally immune for any and all actions taken while President, which would have the effect (again, AFAICT) of immediately killing Smith’s case(s). And handing The Orange Anus an unambiguous “victory”/”exoneration”. Does. Not. Make. Sense.

In a related theme, I was on Staten Island this past weekend, and we were celebrating Hannukah, and all of a sudden we heard loud music and honking horns. The Mrs. looked out the window and saw a caravan of cars with menorahs on them - it was a Mitzvah tank parade - Chabad came to Staten Island and this block, among others, to spread cheer.

It was the first time we’d seen one of these in any of the places I’ve lived, and one of the cars came around to hand gelt out to the kids.

re: #166 Jay C

I really wonder why Smith is doing this - and now?

Does. Not. Make. Sense.

*CJ Roberts *possibly* not included

Smith is doing this because he knows how important it is to get this case tried and a verdict rendered before the election. I really don’t believe that there are five votes for absolute presidential immunity; I don’t think there are more than three, max.

Clams just want us to believe they are pacifists to lure us into a false sense of security. As you can see, they are set on a path toward world domination.

re: #161 silverdolphin

The whole point is that Smith wants to know now rather than have the normal appeals case take up months before the decision.

And thus we will find out if the President can have someone murdered on 5th Avenue without repercussion.

And be interesting how the Supremes feel if they turn the Mango Menace down and he starts spewing his standard threats at them. That might get some other judges to decide to stop handling him with kid gloves.

Alito and Thomas, definitely. Maybe Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh has kind of become Roberts’ mini-me, and Roberts definitely isn’t going to grant Trump absolute power.

With some additional pretzel twisting to make any such decision apply for Trump but not Biden.

Veggie Latkes!

Ingredients for Veggie Latkes

3 carrots
2 zucchini
2 onions
2 large Yukon gold potatoes (3/4 pound)
1/2 cup avocado oil (enough to cover the bottom of your pan by 1/2 inch)
4 eggs
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 1/2 teaspoons salt, plus more to taste
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup all-purpose flour
Sour cream, to serve
Chives, to serve

Steps:
Trim all of the vegetables and peel the carrots.

Using the wide holes on a box grater, shred the carrots, zucchini, onions, and potatoes. (Do the potatoes last so they don’t have time to brown. I like to cut larger potatoes in half so they’re easier to grip.)

Line a large bowl with a tea towel and add the grated vegetables.

Grab the ends of the tea towel and squeeze the water out of the vegetables into the bowl. (There are a lot of watery vegetables, so there should be a lot of water.)

In a large skillet, heat the avocado oil over medium heat.

Pour the water out of the bowl and add the shredded vegetables. Add the eggs, baking powder, salt, pepper, and flour.

Mix together with your hands so everything is evenly combined and no streaks remain.

Using a large scoop, carefully add about a 1/4 cup of the vegetable mixture to the hot oil and flatten slightly with a spatula.

Cook the latkes for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. As you cook, you may need to add more oil to the pan since the latkes will soak it up.

Transfer the latkes to a wire cooling rack and season with salt.

Serve while warm with sour cream and chives.

So maybe someone should point out that ruling that Presidents have unlimited immunity for their actions while in office means that Joe Biden could have a squad of US Marshals arrest Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, for something or other, and have them flown off to Guantanamo to idle in a cell until whenever… And not be legally liable for his actions.
