How to start the New Year:

Felonious Monk
@feloniousmonk.bsky.social

The Cessna dropped me off somewhere outside Sonora, where the scrub and the sand blend together as far as you can see.

The photo on the passport was mine; the name was a new one. I’d get used to it.

I burned down the house before I left. Nothing for the bastards to track me with.

New year, new me.

A senior Israeli official from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government admitted on Saturday that the Gaza Strip is a “ghetto” and that Israel must reduce the enclave’s Palestinian population ― the latest example of Israeli authorities plainly stating their goals for the future of Gaza and Palestinians.

In an interview with Israeli Army Radio, ultranationalist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that his “demand” was for Gaza to stop being a “hotbed where 2 million people grow up on hatred and aspire to destroy the State of Israel.” He did not specify why Palestinian civilians in Gaza would aspire to destroy Israel.

According to a translation by Haaretz, the Religious Zionism party chairman also said that Israel must occupy and resettle Gaza in order to regain security.

“If we act strategically, they will emigrate and we will live there. We won’t let 2 million stay. With 100,000 or 200,000 Arabs in Gaza, the ‘day after’ debate will be different,” Smotrich said, as translated by an Israel analyst with the nonprofit Crisis Group. “They want to leave, they’ve been living in a ghetto for 75 years.”

re: #68 mmmirele

Yoko Ono has had an interesting life. She was born into an elite Japanese family, went to the Peers School (Gakushūin) for high school and started at Gakushūin University. She then went to the USA in 1952 and did quite a bit of stuff in NYC avant-garde circles prior to meeting Lennon in the late 1960s. She has lived over 40 years since he died. During pretty much all that time she has done art, music, various installations and suchlike. It would be interesting to compare and contrast her with the artist Yayoi Kusama, who is four years older, born pretty solidly middle class, who is also an artist (trained in Nihonga painting), who also came to the USA in the mid-1950s but left in 1972 to go to Japan. I would suspect it’s us Olds who know the name Yoko Ono, but Yayoi Kusama is probably more famous among the young for her artwork, particularly her Infinity Room installations and her dot artworks.

Oh yeah, there’s a video of Plastic Ono band performing Instant Karma and Yoko Ono is not singing. Instead, she is sitting in a chair, blindfolded with a menstruation pad,* and crocheting. As someone who has spent a good chunk of my life crocheting, I am rather in awe. Not anyone could do that.

* It wasn’t until many years later that I learned it was a menstruation pad, which were the bane of my early teen years. Yeah, I hated them too.

In the 1980s in regards to Yoko Ono as an artist, the majority of the recording industry considered her a novelty and means to gain access to John Lennon.

The more astute executives wished they had Yoko handling their investment portfolio as well as she did John Lennon’s.

MSFT, AAPL, and GOOG have enough cash laying around to buy out every newspaper, magazine, and book publisher several times over, though I doubt that they’ll need to.

From a technology perspective, large language models are very different from Napster. Claiming copyright violations on this is like claiming copyright violations because someone read a bunch of text books and then wrote a 1 page synthesis.

(((Archangel1)))  Jan 1, 2024 • 1:25:27pm

2024 off to a good start in Israel:

Ynet News: In historic 1st, Supreme Court strikes down Basic Law amendment

The Supreme Court on Monday evening ruled to annul an amendment to a Basic Law that restricts its oversight of the government which was passed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government last July.

The ruling reinstates the so-called reasonableness clause which grants the court oversight of government decisions. This marks the first time the court has ruled on one of Israel’s quasi-constitutional Basic Laws.

In short, after all the chaos it caused the past year, the Israeli Supreme Court just straight-up ripped the heart out of Netanyahu’s judicial “overhaul”, Temple of Doom style. Even Likud ministers are lamenting that after all their efforts amid the year-long protests and dramas, it’s dead in the dirt.

In a subsequent decision, 12 out of the court’s 15 judges declared that the Supreme Court has the authority to cancel Basic Laws. This essentially sends the message that while the specific issue was passed narrowly (as was expected and was attacked by the right wing), the general issue regarding the court’s authority is supported by the judges overwhelmingly.

Trump now has over a 50 point lead in the averaged polls, for the GOP nomination. The others have stalled or are falling off.

So it really does not matter what Haley or DeSantis try to do right now.

The only hope they have is that Trump is convicted before the GOP nomination and the RNC is pushed by the deep pockets to disqualify felons.

48
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 1, 2024 • 3:24:39pm

This graph tells us a few things:

GOP polling 1 Jan 2024

First, pollsters keep going to the same well. A well filled with Trumpers.

Secondly, the inability of any GOP candidate to catch on fire (Haley is a forced thing by the deep pockets) reveals that a non-trivial fraction of the electorate are fat, dumb, and miserable.

Harsh words, but any Trump supporter today does not take their citizenship seriously.
