An Extraordinary Deep-Sea Sighting: The Giant Phantom Jelly

Science • Views: 11,538

I hereby declare 2024 to be the Year of the Giant Phantom Jelly.

This ghostly giant is a rare sight. But in November 2021, MBARI researchers spotted this giant phantom jelly (Stygiomedusa gigantea) with the ROV Doc Ricketts 990 meters (3,200 feet) deep in Monterey Bay. The bell of this deep-sea denizen is more than one meter (3.3 feet) across and trails four ribbon-like oral (or mouth) arms that can grow more than 10 meters (33 feet) in length. MBARI’s ROVs have logged thousands of dives, yet we have only seen this spectacular species nine times.

The giant phantom jelly was first collected in 1899. Since then, scientists have only encountered this animal about 100 times. It appears to have a worldwide distribution and has been recorded in all ocean basins except for the Arctic. The challenges of accessing its deep-water habitat contribute to the relative scarcity of sightings for such a large and broadly distributed species.

Historically, scientists relied on trawl nets to study deep-sea animals. These nets can be effective for studying hardy animals such as fishes, crustaceans, and squids, but jellies turn to gelatinous goo in trawl nets. The cameras on MBARI’s ROVs have allowed MBARI researchers to study these animals intact in their natural environment. High-definition—and now 4K—video of the giant phantom jelly captures stunning details about the animal’s appearance and behaviors that scientists would not have been able to see with a trawl-caught specimen.

And there are (at least AFAIK) two special elections coming up: one to fill Kevin McCarthy’s vacated seat in CA in (?)March, and one to fill George Santos’ evicted one in NY in (?)April.

Unfortunately, I think the retiring Rep. Johnson is from OH - so the district is likely gerrymandered ruby-red….

ADD: Joe My God’s phrasing is a tad off: with Rep. Johnson’s departure, the House GOP will be down to 219 members, i.e. a one-vote NET majority - there are still only 213 Democrats.

From MicroSFF:

“How did you find us? Radio?”
“Radio dissipates,” the alien ambassador said, “telepathy doesn’t.”
“You heard our thoughts?”
“When enough of you focus on the same words, with passion, we sense it.”
“So a prayer or anthem?”
“We don’t know. It begins with: ‘Is this the real life?’.”

You all are hard to keep up with, lol. Late as usual but I wanted to just say thanks for being a great and caring group of humans. I keep trying to post a catch up of my current weirdness, but eye surgery and other nonsense refuses to allow that for now.

I just want to say how glad I am that all of you are here and even when there are disagreements, for the most part people keep their wits and humanity about them. And that some of you have reached out to me over the time I have been here to be of help or comfort. I am sorry my own mess of a life has made it hard if not impossible to match that kindness and humanity. It matters more than you know.

My hope for all of us this year is that we find ways to connect with the humans all around us and help those who are just barely making it. To be kind just because it matters. To help heal struggle so that more of us can thrive. When basic needs are met in every community, so much good can happen, I hope 2024 brings more awareness of this one thing.

My middle son was telling me the other day that he had gotten annoyed at his older brother. My middle son likes to cook, and he made Turkish Delight just to see if he could. In order to keep it from sticking together, he had covered it in powdered sugar and corn starch, but when he went to pull it out the next day, all of that had been absorbed. The older one went “That’s just physics.”

The Secret Joys of Geriatric Rock
It’s a fine line between clever and stupid.
By Tom Nichols

So what, exactly, was I doing earlier this month on a quaint little street in a seaside town in Rhode Island, getting patted down by security for a show by the Tubes, a band known for their decadent stage shows and whose biggest hits were from the 1970s and ’80s? I last saw the Tubes about 40 years ago, when the band was playing the Boston college circuit. What the hell was I doing here? More to the point, what the hell were they doing here?

Speaking of age, I noted that the crowd at the nearly sold-out show was almost entirely over 40, an observation confirmed by the theater’s management. The show was not an intergenerational moment with the kids and grandkids, where the creaky Boomers introduced the youngs to their prehistoric rock idols. (That’s what Rolling Stones concerts are for.) Perhaps it sounds odd to call a rock concert a safe space, but I felt more comfortable shouting lyrics such as “Spent my cash on every high I could find” in a crowd of people close to my own age than I might have while getting the stink eye from someone’s appalled teenager.

She’s gonna be a footnote in history by the end of the year as she ran herself out of her district because she can’t win despite all the incumbent advantages, and decided to run in a right wing district across the state where she has zero contacts/doesn’t live there. Why? Ken Buck is retiring, so she thinks she can just waltz in and win? Ha. There’s half a dozen other right wingers who live in the district and think they can win (and they have backing from the local GOP). Boebert doesn’t, and she’s already indicated she’s not running in her current district, which means Democrats are likely to pick up the seat. Woo!

Bobo has a lot more campaign money than her primary opponents, by orders of magnitude, so there’s that. That said, people in Colorado are sick of her antics, for many right wingers the Beetlejuice hand job thing was the last straw, that will be played ad nauseum in political advertisements by Republicans and Democrats.

And there’s good news for Adam Frisch, the Democrat Bobo ran away from in CO-3. Ron Hanks threw his hat in the ring. Ron Hanks is a 2020 election denier and was in DC on 6 January 2021. Even in very red CO-3 that shit doesn’t really fly, people in the district have moved on.

Yeah, there’s a long thread from copyright/intellectual property law specialist Mike Dunford, one of the favorites of old lawtwitter for his electoral lawsuits analysis, in which he describes just how complicated the case regarding Mickey Mouse really is. Take what happened with Sherlock Holmes, Netflix, and the Conan Doyle estate and multiply that by the thousands of Mickey-based works Disney has.

The prompt that flashes up on my smartwatch screen is as vacuous as it is triggering. ‘You can do it, Clemency! Keep it up, and you can hit your fitness goals today!’

I stare at it.

‘No I can’t,’ I say, eventually, to this inanimate and insensate thing, which is tethered to my wrist but feels attached to so much more. ‘I honestly can’t.’

The notification disappears, a relief, but I know it’s only a matter of time until the next one. I brace myself.

I use a smartwatch these days to monitor everything: my heart rate, my blood pressure, my minutes of REM sleep but also my walking asymmetry and other health ‘factors’ that could indicate, oh, another life-threatening stroke. Factors that could spell doom for an elderly, frail person living on their own, of course, but I am 42: technically in my prime, living with my husband of 15 years and our young sons.

In my former life, I was fiercely independent, criss-crossing the globe and juggling multiple responsibilities and jobs, including as presenter of the BBC’s Culture Show, the Proms and Radio 3’s Breakfast show, and an award-winning podcaster, musician and writer. Then, aged 38, everything changed.

I saw the premiere of A Boy and HIs Dog at Filmex in 1975. I will never forget it because Filmex had a 40 science fiction film marathon that was anchored by this movie. We forgot to bring money, everything was closed overnight and we were starving by the next day. We ate sugar and catsup packets until the stores opened.

I don’t recall where ( a large auditorium somewhere) or exactly when it was (1969?) but I attended a speech by Harlan Ellison in which he gave the audience an opportunity to select a new story of his for him to read to us — and the winner was A Boy and His Dog. Not my kind of story. His works were all intriguing but too creepy and unpleasant for my taste.

Here’s some Harlan Ellison trivia most don’t know. He had a niece who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend (murder/suicide.) He, the boyfriend, was a gun-maker, although not as famous as he liked others to believe. He was a huge Rifleman fan and made some guns for Chuck Conners, although they were never used on the show. He became friends with Conners’ sons, and when his ex got a restraining order against him, he gave his guns to Conners’ son to hold, but then told him he had a buyer for one of them, so the son gave it back to him. He then went, shot Ellison’s niece (while her two kids were in the house) and killed himself. My brother-in-law knew him, as they shared a love of TV westerns. Look up Maurice “Moe” Hunt and Michelle Ellison Romprey.

Edit, for the sake of accuracy—Connors (not Conners)

Alex Jones terrified Trump will be on Epstein list: ‘He is devoted to one woman at a time’

uh Alex…you forgot about…STORMY…

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones insisted Tuesday that the CIA may have altered Jeffrey Epstein’s flight logs to smear former President Donald Trump.

While waiting for a list of Epstein associates to be released, Jones prepared his audience to see Trump’s name.

“I will say this, if it turns out Trump ever went to Epstein Island, I will remove any support from him,” Jones said. “But I know Roger Stone very well, and I know people that know Trump well, a lot of people, I’ll leave it at that. I know women that have dated Trump, prominent women.”

“He gets devoted to one woman at a time, gets totally obsessed with them, totally nice to them,” he continued. “He’s a neat freak, he wants testing, he puts Purell on his hands constantly.”

uh…he smells like shit, Alex…

Jones acknowledged that Trump had flown on Epstein’s so-called “Lolita Express” jet years earlier.

“But if they put out a client list, and that’s possible that it could be fake, because Epstein’s dead,” Jones said. “And that’s something very possible. So we’ll have to decide, is it a fake list they put in, because the CIA was in charge of that with Mossad and MI6, all three of those groups that’s come out were running it.”

Lawsuit seeks to remove Scott Perry from Pennsylvania ballot using 14th amendment

abc27.com

A lawsuit has been filed in Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court to remove Republican U.S. House Representative Scott Perry from the 2024 ballot due to the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause.

The lawsuit, which was filed on January 2 by Harrisburg-area activist and former congressional candidate Gene Stilp, calls for Pennsylvania’s Secretary of State Al Schmidt to remove Perry from the ballot ahead of the spring’s 10th Congressional District primary.

The lawsuit alleges Perry helped push conspiracy theories that the 2020 election was stolen and advanced efforts to replace the Attorney General with a Trump loyalist.

“Scott Perry was a leading proponent of using the January 6, 2021 Congressional presidential election certification process to disrupt the transfer of presidential administration from Trump to Biden,” says the lawsuit, sighting the FBI’s seizure of Perry’s cellphone records and other accusations made against Perry following the January 6 attack.

The lawsuit also requests a referral of “information of any possible criminal activity by Scott Perry or any other party discovered in this case to the Pennsylvania Attorney General for prosecution.”

The full lawsuit can be read below.

There is fuck all they can do about it. Original Mickey is in the public domain now.

re: #33 darthstar

It’s okay to fuck with public domain Mickey…and obviously people are going to have some fun with it until the novelty wears off.

Ehhh, the copyright on Steamboat Willie and its original version of Mickey Mouse is kaput as of yesterday, but Disney’s made sure to use that version of Mickey for some of their corporate branding over the past 10-15 years to get it trademark protection, when it became obvious that Congress wasn’t going to extend copyright terms even further (for now), so people may not necessarily be as in-the-clear as they think (skip to 17:45 below):

From downstairs:

I don’t recall where ( a large auditorium somewhere) or exactly when it was (1969?) but I attended a speech by Harlan Ellison in which he gave the audience an opportunity to select a new story of his for him to read to us — and the winner was A Boy and His Dog. Not my kind of story. His works were all intriguing but too creepy and unpleasant for my taste.

I bet he was a great story reader. His stories work best as “Outer Limits” episodes which is why two of the best were by him - “Soldier” and “Demon with a Glass Hand”.

I got to take part in his “Ten Nights down A Rabbit Hole” at UCLA. The final night we helped create Harlan’s World with him, Tom Disch, Robert Silverberg, Frank Herbert and I think Larry Niven. I still have the handout with all their signatures. He was a force of nature but, as you said, very hard to take in anything but small doses.

If his VP took office, would a new VP be selected immediately? If so, it would take two fallen Presidents to shuffle Trump into the Presidency. If not, one, after Trump is pardoned and made VP the same day.

Who’s the Trump VP that comes to a bad end in this plan?

Yeah well, and if he gets elected (G-D FORBID!! חס ושלום!) there will be a tsunami of lawsuits claiming that because he was elected he is ENTITLED TO “BE” POTUS without taking an Oath.

You know that TFG sees the real work is “campaigning” (participating in the pageant & “acing” the talent and swimsuit competitions) and the prize is “Being Mister President” like Miss Universe.

He did, and then he decided to bitch about it being the fault of the Democratic Party for not setting up a proper primary challenge when President Biden, the de facto leader of said Party, has shown no reason not to be afforded the deference that is usually given to incumbent Presidents during the second term election cycle. Ever since then, it’s been straight downhill into conspiracy cuckoo land, and the Minnesota DFL is starting to organize against him here at home. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him running as a Republican in the fall.
