I hope I live long enough to see historians make sense of this era. It’s certainly like nothing I’ve seen in my lifetime.

I was 10 the first time somebody was elected US President that my parents weren’t for. I thought that was going to be the end.

Oh, Dad hated Clinton for pretty much the entire gamut of right-wing conservative reasons people hated Clinton, but otherwise, it was business as usual in the fish household. It wasn’t until Obama got elected that things started going off the rails.

My youngest sister supported Shirley Chisolm in 1972 and Gene McCarthy in 1976. Then she turned into a hard core Republican and voted GOP for everything starting in 1980 because she opposed abortion. She repeatedly said she prayed for the day the court would overturn Roe and she got her way before she died…

FWIW, my voting history has a decisive left turn. From when I first started voting (1984) to the election of 2000, I was one of those much-derided swing voters, with a lean-R preference.

But I will never vote for a Republican again as long as I live. W’s first term saw to that.

By the time of the election, I had already jumped the shark, so to speak. My left-turn experience was almost complete by then. I was more referring to watching as my dad stockpiled ammunition and swallowed the Birther conspiracy theories wholesale.

I don’t think that’s all that uncommon an experience: Dubya’s dubious “victory” in 2000, and the gloating exploitation thereof; the 9/11/01 attacks, and the Great National Freakout over them (and more political exploitation): the War On Terror/Iraq War - again, shamelessly exploited for political ends, and whose failures were diligently obviated- and finally, the Great Recession of 2008. I think that series of events has permanently scarred the GOP, and soured the electorate. Though disgracefully, not enough to reject their last-ditch effort to maintain their political relevance by rebranding themselves as the Party Of Prejudice….

After the elections of 1980, 1984, 1988, there was an impression that Republicans would rule forever. Looking back, Clinton’s third way crap may have been necessary (even while being undeniably crappy). A party that’s too far left of the electorate just loses.

I grew up in a Republican house, voted for Dole in my first presidential election because that’s what good Republicans did. Supported McCain in the 2000 primary and voted Libertarian in the general. Was a registered Republican until 2012 or so, but tended to vote Libertarian in the presidential general. Don’t think I had a straight ticket voting experience until Trump came along.

I always had pretty strong libertarian leaning, still do for the most part. The shift for me in the aughts was more about my priorities than my views on issues. Then the mortgage crisis shifted me a bit, in the sense that I came to recognize that the glibertarian view of “all government is bad government” and “all businesses are good business” was fairly fucked.

A Russian national was sentenced yesterday to five years and four months in prison for his involvement in developing and deploying the malicious software known as Trickbot, which was used to launch cyberattacks against American hospitals and other businesses.

According to court documents and public reporting, Vladimir Dunaev, 40, of Amur Oblast, Russia, provided specialized services and technical abilities in furtherance of the Trickbot scheme. Trickbot, which was taken down in 2022, was a suite of malware tools designed to steal money and facilitate the installation of ransomware. Hospitals, schools, and businesses were among the millions of Trickbot victims who suffered tens of millions of dollars in losses. While active, Trickbot malware, which acted as an initial intrusion vector into victim computer systems, was used to support various ransomware variants.

“This sentencing demonstrates the department’s ability to place cybercriminals behind bars, no matter where they are located,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “In cooperation with our partners around the world, we will continue to bring cybercriminals to justice.”

re: #54 A Three Hour Tour

Kliph’s mispronunciation of Kanawha County is driving me crazy. It’s kuh-NAW-uh (or, often, simply kuh-NAW), not KAN-o-WAH.

You ought to hear how people who have never heard of french can mangle the place name of “Eau Claire”… 😈

Do you know of a left-turn experience?

Me. I voted Republican until 2012 when I voted for Obama. I’ve stayed center-left since. Obama changed me, and in a very good way.

re: #56 Florida Panhandler

Fox Noise and the rest of the white noise-o-sphere will start equating Democracy with Socialism and conditioning the MAGA crowd to hate voting in principle as a means of governing.

They’ll certainly try - but every time they edge that far in the direction of crazy, some non-zero number of “independent” voters are going to decide it’s finally a step too far and not vote for Trump in the fall.

Which is not a great way to reverse the 70,000 votes or whatever the deciding margin was for Biden in the swing states in 2020… along with the hundreds of thousands of would-have-been-Trump votes who are no longer with us after their ivermectin cures.

I meant to be asking teleskiguy about his father, but this has been great. Welcome. I’m a lifer. Went third party for a bit, but I got better.

re: #57 darthstar

I’m having a hard time following Ukraine news because every single post reminds me that half of our government is actively working to help Putin claim Ukrainian territory forever.

What are you worried about? Tuberville says that Russia has only taken 50 miles of Ukranian territory in two years, and any fear of continued Russian expansion is just bedwetting.
