Today’s program from our podcasting affiliate, The Bob Cesca Show:

He’s 81 And He Knows Things — Joe Biden’s appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. We hopefully put an end to the Dump Biden speculation. The nonsense about Biden using notes is a repeat of the 2012 Obama teleprompter madness. The South Carolina Primary results. How Meet the Press framed the SC results versus how Fox News framed the results. Trump illustrates just how loyal he is to Putin. Trump appealed the civil fraud judgment. Vornado vs Vornado. The RNC money problems. The Republicans are painted into a corner on IVF. We know who made the Biden AI robocall. With Buzz Burbank, music by The Metal Byrds, The Coal Men, and more!

He doesn’t spend hours under a tanning bed or getting his combover perfect or glopping a pancake-thick base of makeup on. He gets up, gets dressed and goes to work.

Anyone believing this liar?

sure, i have no problem believing one of his lawyers told him this.

do i believe it’s anything other than the lawyer’s own speculation and he’d have an actual source? nah.

bringing forward:

I dont much care about the apparent ‘hypocrisy’ w/r/t R’s who’ve had IVF, successfully or not, and are now out to ban it.
They are well known for pulling up the ladder after themselves.
But it was a few judges who manufactured the Alabama decision.
And laws do change all the time - sometimes things that were legal, no longer are.
You know, like Roe.

The hypocrisy around Roe is found when speculating whether any hard line supporters had, or financed abortions themselves.

So my question to someone like Pence, who used IVF, is are they still storing their unused ‘embroys’ or were they in fact accomplices to murder (or whatever the ALA court called it) when they (presumably) let their extra ones go?

Or didn’t they see it that way themselves at the time.

Because that, to me would be as much a disqualifier as Herschel Walker’s abortions. (I’da said tfg’s abortions but we know they wouldnt move the needle)

I’m only looking at the single frame, but it looks like they painted stuff white, and then took down the plantation sign, and that’s it.

another musing, this regarding DA Bragg’s motion for the gag order

i’m not following it but i’d bet the volume of threats surrounding Engoron, those specifically targeting his clerk and the other court personnel on that case have probably dropped to almost zero

and as soon as the next case heats up, they’ll all magically move to that roster.

think that’s some natural phenomenon?

re: #4 Belafon

My former wife was born and raised on a former Southern Virginia Plantation. (Too far north for cotton, they raised tobacco.)

There were still several original slave cabins on the much diminished and divided property. The slave cabins were small single room, single floor, and constructed very roughly.

What the video shows in a single cabin probably is larger than the floor space in all of the Virginia slave cabins together. Ignoring the running water and central heat. In my ex’s case, her parents’ family farm did not get electricity until 1948.

I will give her father a lot of credit. He was a retired elderly farmer selling off land and renting other parts of it to survive. But he made sure that he did everything that he could to help any of his neighbors in need, white or black.

Well… That was unexpected…

The Washington Post published an article on the ways that AI is affecting the US Porn Industry. I didn’t see anything salacious or giggle-inducing.

It asks questions like:

How will the porn-associated internet infrastructure be affected.
What boundaries will AI developers place on their engines.
Will there be custom/bespoke porn
How will chatbots affect customer/sex worker interaction
How will the actors and other workers protect their brands

Gift Link: AI ‘dream girls’ are coming for porn stars’ jobs
AI will change adult entertainment forever. The risks — for sex workers and the rest of us — are profound.

In my personal experience - it was still going on in central FL in the 1960s.

Doing business with one of my father’s customers who owned orange groves. On his property there were small concrete block structures - maybe 20X20 - which had openings for a door and windows, except there was no door or windows - just the openings.

They were housing for Jamaicans who they would fly in to pick fruit and fly back to Jamaica after fruit picking season.

One segment of Edward R. Murrow’s broadcast “Harvest Of Shame” featured my home town.

Yup, it used to be extremely expensive in time and money to construct an artificial filming location. As computers and software have improved the cost has gone down and the complexity the software provides has increased. And now, things can be modified in small, seamless and likely unnoticed ways.

When my sister and brother-in-law lived in Seattle they took me to Snoqualmie where Twin Peaks was filmed. It was interesting to see how the producers had modified specific visual avenues for filming purposes, but left others unmodified as they were not going to be used.

I remember reading a story about when JFK flew into Germany to give his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. To save money, the base commander had a plot of every angle JFK would be able to see of the post. And then only painted and renovated those specific parts.

Yes, what is truth?

The problem is that people have taken the idea of “the Bible is the inspired Word of God” a bit too far. It’s supposed to mean that the Bible is the authoritative book God gave us for how to practice our religion. The literalists take it to mean that the Bible is literal, factual truth, and that it is a complete guide to life, the universe, and everything. I mean, for Christ’s sake, literally 2/3 of the Bible is history, poetry, or rules for goat herders living in the fucking desert. What’s that supposed to teach us about science?

Background on this, Its based on a murder case for a guy called George Kelly (75) , an AZ rancher who shot at a group of unarmed migrants crossing his property in 2022 and he killed one of them and is on trial for manslaughter currently.

Yeah but this will blow up in their stupid faces, sure, we are in an election year and AZ is a battleground state but stupid shit like this is pretty offensive to all but a small group of true believers, it will be dubbed the murder bill or something and will be a complete electoral liability, as James Carville said, if you see your opponent drowning, throw the son of a bitch an anchor.

The Trillion Dollar Equation

..

Reminds me of some acquaintances back in the late 1980’s who had started to delve into neural nets (then a new thing, as far as computers) to take advantage of the non-efficient stock market.

The video touches on some of the mathematics, which by itself is not too over-the-top for someone who has had a calculus class, but the implications are far more profound.

The entire ideas of randomness and efficiency when applied to groups of humans, as in a “market”, calls into question beliefs about ourselves as free-will actors.

Somehow we can act individually as though we have free will, but in the big picture we are part of a group that will manifest itself according to physics as described by math.

We’re governed by laws that physics is uncovering. Those laws seem to include a randomness that averages out over scale.

We are people, we have basic functions and needs, and those are somewhat predicament especially in the aggregate. Our system can generally handle that people aren’t exactly the same, except in the extreme situations such as a pandemic or someone walking into a school and killing.

No BA fasteners? I’ve recently pulled some old lab gear apart and ended up with a bunch of British Association nuts and bolts (6BA and 2BA mostly). I needed some BA nuts and bolts a few years ago to fix up the electrical switchgear on some workshop tools rescued from a school that was being demolished and I had to source new stock for mucho dinero, now I’ve got them coming out of my ears.

The instruments on your truck might use BA threads if they’re Smiths Industries come to think of it. Joe Lucas, the Prince of Darkness, used them too if I recall.

re: #63 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Watching today’s Veritasium:

The entire ideas of randomness and efficiency when applied to groups of humans, as in a “market”, calls into question beliefs about ourselves as free-will actors.

Somehow we can act individually as though we have free will, but in the big picture we are part of a group that will manifest itself according to physics as described by math.

Author Isaac Asimov used this concept in his Foundation series, written back in the early ’50s. He called it “psychohistory” invented by psychohistorian Harry Selden. In the book, psychohistory’s fundamental premise is that it is impossible to predict future actions taken by individual humans but, grouped in large numbers, their actions can be predicted and, as a result, directed.

Whenever I watch a movie or show, I always try to figure out which city they are in, and then the neighborhood by the scenery.
With AI you can kiss that goodbye.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
But what if the picture lies?

Marvel now films in a stage where a room the size of a small stadium has walls where they project the scenery. They don’t green screen most of the shot.

The Tingler (1959)

“Percepto!” was a gimmick where Castle attached electrical “buzzers” to the underside of some seats in theaters where The Tingler was screened to provide “tingling” sensations during certain scenes.[14][8] The buzzers were small surplus airplane wing deicing motors left from World War II. The cost of this equipment added $250,000 to the film’s budget.[1] It was used predominantly in larger theaters. The prologue claimed some people might not be susceptible to the “tingling” to take account that not all seats were wired.[8]

.… The DOJ has argued that Google’s deal with Apple—valued at $26 billion in 2021—helped to build a “moat around Google’s monopoly” by blocking any meaningful new entrants in the general search market. This alleged monopoly, the DOJ claimed, has kept Google from improving its own search quality, only doing so when competitors like Bing started to get ahead. This means that Google can afford to spend years providing slower and less accurate results, the DOJ alleged, without losing its market dominance.

At the antitrust trial, Google CEO Sundar Pichai explained that Google pays Apple 36 percent of its search advertising revenue from Safari to keep its search engine set as the default in Apple’s browser because default placements can be “very valuable.” . .

From reading the article, a big problems comes from Google’s early mover advantage. Microsoft said ti would take 17 years to accumulate the same data that Google had. Apple shut down its own search engine because it would take too long to become competitive. .

Is the DOJ case actually going to make things better for consumers? Or only for the investors in these companies?

I think the deal should actually go in reverse: Google should be forced to license access to it’s data at reasonable prices and let others build on top of it. It can keep it’s search algorithm proprietary, but not the data.

1. Ukraine claimed that it downed a 2nd Russian SU-34 today.

2. The Houthis launched 5 ‘suicide’ drones against a US and a German warship. All were reportedly shot down. But one of these days, the Iranians and Houthis are going to get lucky. And the Germans may have neglected to reorder enough anti-aircraft missiles.

3. Yesterday somebody sent an envelope with “unknown white powder” to tfg’s eldest failson. There was excitement. I’m wondering if his most recent cocaine order got intercepted.

4. Macron of France and Polish President Dudaj said that NATO must be prepared to put “boots on the ground” in Ukraine. And German Chancellor Sholz replied that “that is a great big Nope”. Scholz is also under pressure to send more Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. He has declined so far.

5. One French and 3 Jordanian C-130s, in coordination with the Israelis, airdropped Humanitarian supplies into the Gaza Strip.

Just a heads up to deal with the NYT style news from Michigan. Polls had shown that Biden would get 77% of the vote and uncommitted would get 16%.

Right now Biden is over 80% and uncommitted is less than 14%. One side seems to be overperforming the polls.

The same poll said Trump would get 76% and Haley would get 24%. Trump now has 67% and Haley has 27%.

SO, once again, Biden is overperforming and his competiiton is underperforming compared to the polls (but not by much. The polls were not too far off). However, Trump really underperforms once again by 9 points and Haley overperforms.

But the media will all be about the 14% uncommitted for Biden, even though it is less than the polls suggested. Will anyone talk about the 27% for Haley or the 3% uncommitted bringing us to 30% who do not want Trump

During a recent interview with the conservative show Chief Nerd, Carlson mentioned, “The idea that I’ve been flacking for Putin when my relatives fought in the Revolutionary War. I’m as American as you could be. [Atlantic staff writer] Anne Applebaum calls me a ‘traitor.’ It’s just, like, so dumb.”

Applebaum replied to Carlson’s statement via X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Lots of people whose relatives fought in the Revolutionary war took up arms against the United States in 1861, and they were traitors too.”

Apparently even Microsoft doesn’t have the resources to make a sustainable move into the data market..

I’m thinking I may be on the wrong side of the country. You seem to have found an excellent group of restaurants!

Pre-Covid I use to go to a couple of ice cream places in Falls Church, and to Toby’s in Westover Village-Arlington.

When in Westover, I would generally head over to the Lost Dog (pizza) or Stray Cat (hamburger/’American’) chain for dinner. (They support a dog and cat adoption foundation.)

There were a couple of good ice cream places in Downtown DC in Georgetown and Dupont Circle. But my enthusiasm for schlepping down there has been decreasing.

If the outbreak in Florida increases much more, it will be very hard to stop. It could run through the elections. And a very high percentage of children are hospitalized with this disease. Will it change any minds?

Of worry also are whooping cough outbreaks in low vaccination areas. These have been seen in a few places already. Since it is a spring-summer disease, this could get worse. Infants cannot be given the vaccine for the disease and can easily succumb to pneumonia if they get it.

Die to the increasing numbers of (vaccinated) parents who refuse to get their children vaccinated, “childhood diseases” will become adult diseases as the non-vac population ages.

re: #197 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Here I will apply it to climate change (as mentioned in the video.)

The “doomers” are pushing harder the idea that there cannot be, and some asserting there should not be, a “soft landing”.

This is a subject for a long discussion, but here I will raise the problem of waste heat.

Currently, waste heat compared to trapped solar energy, is much smaller than the latter.

Annual energy addition to the surface of the Earth-system, by waste heat, is estimated to be 1.5% of that of trapped solar energy.

But something overlooked by many is that most of that waste heat is generated by a small minority of the planet.

The US consumes about one sixth of all the energy used by us humans on the planet.

But we are only a bit over 4% of the planet’s population.

IF we believe that all humans have a right to live the luxurious life we Americans have, then the waste heat figure will go up dramatically.

What this means: a global civilization living at American standards will heat the surface of the Earth about one third as fast as the trapped solar energy. Up from just 1.5%.

This means after 3 centuries, a global civilization will have raised the surface temp around 2C just from waste heat alone.

This, btw, is why movie representations of global advanced civilizations are just wacky. Take Star Wars for example, with the center of the Empire on a planet covered by a giant city. Said planet would be boiling hot.

So yes, the doomers have a point.

Any civilization in which humans use machines that require energy (and they all do), will end in disaster.

Or should we say apocalypse.

The 538 average had Trump at 78.7% going into last night, and Biden down at 70.7% in the latest poll. So Trump continues to underperform and Biden continues to overperform, yet the Beltway theme will continue to be that Trump is strutting his way to the nomination while Biden is in dire straits.

re: #199 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I think I over estimated the total waste heat of 8 billion people living at US standards.

Still, the total will be significantly greater than what it is now.

Maybe it’ll take 6 centuries to get to plus 2C from waste heat, instead of 3.

Regardless, there will be no millenium-long high-energy-consumption civilization.

The waste heat problem will just be too big (to say nothing of the resource extraction problem.)

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Feb 28, 2024 • 3:29:26am

Some people are claiming that everybody has the right to air-conditioning.

This is part of the “climate justice” conundrum.

It’s all a fantasy, because the resources need to provide every household with an air conditioner, even if it is a heat pump, are too great.

Heat pumps are wonderful but they are not perpetual energy machines.

I suspect that this will all be given-up by 2050. Assuming we’ve not killed ourselves via world war, the pressure of maintaining a high-energy lifestyle will drive the world into a frenzy and then economic collapse.

One application of all this apocalypticism:

The current US political system is broken, I think we can all agree, if one expects a government to truly represent its people.

The anti-democratic forces in the US are pushing very hard to stamp out any advances made in the right to vote.

This is in great measure desperation on their part.

The US now has 340 million people. Even at only a .5% population growth rate, by 2100 the US population will be near 500 million.

The current arrangement of 435 Representatives is not enough for such a population.

And if the electoral college survives, it will be even more archaic than it is now.

The push to live high-energy lifestyles is not going to go away.

This is all a formula for some dramatic shifts that will happen in our society.

The anti-immigrant faction of our electorate is going to continue to scream louder and louder.

For example, in my Facebook timeline popped up a meme (from an in-law) championing that the “wall” needs to be “electrified”.

Putting aside the maliciousness of such thinking, how is one going to run an electric fence in the middle of the Rio Grande for a thousand miles?

Ok, so the xenophobic Trumpers are not very bright. Not a new revelation.

Yet they are salivating with hate.

The pressure from migrants will not go away.

The Trumping wing of the American electorate will not be able to reconcile that with their beliefs.

This issue of migration will be played out in borders all over the world.

We really do need to adjust our political system to handle:
1) a population of half a billion people, who will be concentrated in about half the states;
2) massive migration pressure.

Another example of where governance is currently missing the urge to change: Australia.

Earlier I linked the latest Veritasium video, in which Derek mentioned he has relocated to Australia.

He did not explain why.

Perhaps it was a family thing.

Australia has lots of resources but not many people.

And the right wing know-nothings are very prominent in Australia (remember the Murdochs came from Australia.)

But Australians do seem to be less affected by their religious right, at least in their governance.

Regardless of their internal political machinations, the demands on Australia for accepting migrants is going to go up, significantly, as the century moves on.

As sea level rises, the very populated nations of the Indonesia and Malaysia will need an outlet. And the small island nations will need to be rescued.

Some nations (currently on small islands) may need to be completely relocated.

And Australia is the closest large land mass.

But will the Australian electorate be able to handle this?

I know one of the common counter-arguments against the Alabama Supreme Court’s theocratic “every embryo is a living person” decree runs along the lines of, “So if I serve you an egg, does that mean I murdered a chicken?” There’s a problem with how this argument lands, though. In our minds, it’s perfectly rational; embryo -> human = egg -> chicken, right? But the thing you have to realize is, in the minds of the theocrats, humans are special. According to the literalist interpretation of the Bible, God explicitly and specifically created man and woman as separate from the animals. Therefore, any comparison of an embryo to any other undeveloped animal is automatically invalid, because only humans are worthy of having a soul, the fundamental difference that makes them special. Put more simply, to them, an embryo has a human soul, whereas an egg does not; so there’s no difference between serving chicken meat or a chicken egg.

And they quote an obscure bit from Jeremiah while wilfully ignoring other Biblical passages that state clearly that life starts at the first breath and treat killing an unborn child as a form of property damage.

I never said their legal argument was a good one; I just wanted to explain the mindset behind why, when you make these sorts of arguments to these people, they will dismiss you out of hand. It’s not that the “egg = embryo” argument is factually wrong; it’s that it doesn’t comport with their religious notions of what makes human beings special, so they simply discard it altogether. And when they are making legal decisions based on their highly distorted religious dogma, it’s worth pointing out their thought processes.

As for the last part, I think we’ve been over that ad nauseam. I was careful to point out that the verse in question doesn’t even make the argument they want to make, they simply took a conclusion (“life begins at the instant of fertilization”) and reverse-engineered a Bible verse so that it became a religious issue, and thus subject to the First Amendment’s freedom of religion clause.

I would buy this in a heartbeat.

The eclectic London home that Freddie Mercury designed to fit his eccentric lifestyle has hit the market for offers over £30 million (US$38 million).

Garden Lodge, in the capital’s posh Kensington, was Mercury’s much-loved home from 1980—when on a first viewing he decided to buy the property on the spot—until his death in 1991, at which point the Queen frontman’s residence and everything in it was bequeathed to his one-time fianceé and close friend, Mary Austin.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Looks like Michigan again confounds pollsters and continues that trend. Pollsters keep overestimating Trump support and underestimating Biden support. Trump keeps underperforming the expected outcomes by significant margins, while Biden overperforms slightly.

Why?

Biden support is stronger than we give him credit for, even as Michigan protest vote is comparable to what happened in 2012 with Obama. It’s a fraction of the uncommitted vote from 2008.

Pro-Russian separatist officials in the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria have appealed to Moscow for “protection”, according to a resolution passed by a special congress of the region on Wednesday.

Officials will ask Russia’s Federation Council and State Duma “to implement measures to protect Transnistria in the face of increased pressure from Moldova”, the resolution said, according to local and Russian news agencies.

Google’s image AI is .. um… what’s the phrase? All kinds of fucked up beyond all recognition.

Just last week, Google was forced to pump the brakes on its AI image generator, called Gemini, after critics complained that it was pushing bias … against white people.

The controversy started with — you guessed it — a viral post on X. According to that post from the user @EndWokeness, when asked for an image of a Founding Father of America, Gemini showed a Black man, a Native American man, an Asian man, and a relatively dark-skinned man. Asked for a portrait of a pope, it showed a Black man and a woman of color. Nazis, too, were reportedly portrayed as racially diverse.

The technical reasons? The AI is trying to compensate for the fact that there are now things like female or persons of color who are attorneys and can be president or VP. Or business leaders.

But of course there’s a freakout because this generated images of the Founders as persons of color. The freakout is by exactly who you’d think.

Donald and Melania Trump’s Many Fights Outlined in New Book

thedailybeast.com

Former President Donald Trump and his wife Melania had more than their fair share of spats during their time in the White House, according to a new book released Tuesday. In American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady, from Hillary Clinton to Jill Biden author Kate Rogers detailed many of the couple’s feuds, highlighting how the president tried to suppress his wife’s independence and the small ways in which Melania tried to fight back. Rogers wrote about Melania’s efforts to decorate the White House residence, only to have her choices replaced by her husband. In another instance compiled by People, Trump flew into a fury on Air Force One when he caught his wife watching CNN, which she preferred, rather than his preferred Fox News. The commander-in-chief ordered that all their televisions needed to be turned to Fox News going forward. Rogers also documented Melania’s attempts to break from her husband’s extremist messaging. “Her tweets were small gestures that amounted to little more than digital ephemera,” Rogers writes. “Still, compared with her husband’s bridge burners, Melania’s missives established her as a rare figure in the Trump administration who seemed more interested in calming a cultural divide than widening it.”

An emotional Chippewa Falls School Board meeting was filled with parents seeking answers as to why they weren’t notified immediately after a potential school threat in October 2023.

Several people at Tuesday night’s meeting interjected with shouts of “Irrelevant” or “Why don’t you lie louder?”

Ten Chippewa Falls residents spoke during public comment. Many of them thanked the district for taking swift action to what could’ve been a tragedy, and many of those same speakers harshly criticized administrators on what they call a ‘lack of transparency’ and a ‘lack of accountability.’

It was months later that parents learned of the potential threat after the release of police records on a right wing YouTube channel called Louder with Crowder.

Gerald Morgan with Louder with Crowder, and who is also a Chippewa Falls resident, said district leaders deprived parents of information.

“These parents could have been your line of defense asking questions to their kids saying, ‘Hey, have you been talking about this stuff? Has this been happening?’ If the lawyers say you can’t put somebody’s information out there specifically, I understand that, too. It could’ve been very general,” said Morgan. “You have to understand that you deprived parents of this (info.) and if you’re going to say the law is preventing you, then guess what? This fight just got bigger and the law needs to change.”

West Virginia loses a cultural icon. 😢

Hundreds Gather At Candlelight Vigil for Last Hooters in West Virginia

Hundreds of devoted friends and neighbors gathered to honor the closure of a beloved restaurant ahead of its planned demolition on Monday. The Kanawha City eatery was West Virginia’s last remaining Hooters. “It’s a lot of memories going down with that building,” one resident who attended the vigil told a local station. The restaurant known for chicken wings and its provocatively dressed waitresses fell victim to pandemic closures in 2020 and never reopened; instead, the land will be used for a Sheetz gas station. Though the vigil began partly in jest, plenty of former employees and guests attended to reunite with familiar faces there. They brought signs in the chain’s signature orange and wore merch to honor the good times, hot wings, and tiny clothes enjoyed at the establishment. Though the chain has been hit with a number of scandals and backlash in recent years, there were only loving sentiments at the West Virginia gathering. “Long live Hooters!” an emotional crowd cheered. “Long live Hooters!”

And Hunter Biden opens fire on Comer Pyle

Hunter Biden testified Wednesday that he “did not involve” his father, President Biden, in his business dealings, delivering the message at the beginning of his highly anticipated deposition as part of the GOP’s impeachment inquiry into the president.

“I am here today to provide the committees with the one uncontestable fact that should end the false premise of this inquiry: I did not involve my father in my business. Not while I was a practicing lawyer, not in my investments or transactions domestic or international, not as a board member, and not as an artist. Never,” Biden said during his opening statement.

The US now has 340 million people. Even at only a .5% population growth rate, by 2100 the US population will be near 500 million.

…..
We really do need to adjust our political system to handle:
1) a population of half a billion people, who will be concentrated in about half the states;
2) massive migration pressure.

The world cannot handle an annual .5% population growth — our nation cannot handle that either … not in the long term. At that rate, in 300 years, there would be 35 billion people on the planet and 1.5 billion here. Drastic measures will be needed to save our planet and our nation from catastrophic collapse.

This will turn out great. Trump will be 10,000 times better for the Palestinians. It’s gonna be fantastic.

(And once Trump starts his assault on Muslims, these same folks will blame Democrats for not stopping him)

What do you want those voters to do? Just shut up and go along with whatever policy that the Biden has? They don’t have a right to express their displeasure/disagreement with a guy they helped elect? They’re using what political power they have to try and move Biden’s policy - maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t, but these are important issues to this voting block and they feel like they are being ignored in favor of a stupid policy (the “Hug Bibi” bullshit that has made the US look incredibly stupid).

Since Trump is directing all of this he and his sycophants in congress are having a hard time believing that Biden isn’t directing Hunter’s activities and skimming his fair share because that’s what Trump would do.

It will be interesting to see if Ukraine can find a way to intervene. And clear out the small Russian Army garrison. I suspect everyone is expecting the International borders to prevent that from happening.

If the Ukrainians do figure how to do this, action would free up Moldova to join European institutions. And to decide if they want to remain independent or join some sort of union with Romania.

True this, but (just on a WAG), the next R Leader in the Senate is likely to be either Thune or Cornyn, (since they’re next in line) and neither of those guys is really much of an improvement IMO, on McConnell.
Hopefully, the next R honcho in the Senate will be the Minority Leader: though, in an objective analysis, the election map doesn’t look too good this year: my personal prediction (i.e., another WAG) is that the best-case scenario is going to be the 51-49 D Majority we have now. However, OTOH, I think the worst-case scenario is a 50-50 tie, so not a total disaster.

re: #381 Jay C

I don’t care for Cornyn, so don’t consider this an endorsement, but at least he’s told Johnson to pass Ukraine funding, even if that just means attaching the Senate bill to something so that it gets passed.

First shots are fired: msn.com

◼ The veteran Republican Senate leader has become the last serious bulwark within the party against Trump populists’ animosity toward US international commitments

◼ Slowed by age but unbowed in his determination

◼ His power has been underpinned by a political shrewdness that inspired confidence

And denied the first Blah POTUS a SCOTUS seat…..because 12 months is “too close” to a general election.

In a speech on the Senate floor, Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he will leave his leadership position but intends to serve through the end of his term in 2027.

He is acknowledging that the GOP is now fully owned by Putin and that the leadership needs to reflect that this is the party of treason and racism and gilead.

AOC is exactly right. Deep sea fishing expedition that is very polite. It seems it is more likely a poo fling hoping something will stick.

Same people have known all along that the republicans have been searching for a blue dress to tie to Biden. They also know that there is no new blue dress.

He’s not craven — just vile and racist.
