One vent still erupting:

Reykjanes volcano 30 Mar 2024

Long term: once this eruption stops, there will be a lull for awhile (a few months) then the possibility for a new eruption.

No one can predict this with high confidence, but based on past eruptions on the peninsula once an eruptive period starts it lasts for around a century.

‘FYI’: White House turns claim that Joe Biden banned religious egg designs around on Trump

Donald Trump on Saturday claimed that Joe Biden’s White House banned religious-themed egg designs from its Easter celebration, but that policy extended even into Trump’s term, according to some insiders.

White House Deputy Assistant to the President Elizabeth Alexander poured cold water on the claim.

“*Fyi on all the misleading swirl re White House and Easter: the American Egg Board flyer’s standard non-discrimination language requesting artwork has been used for the last 45 years, across all Dem & Republican Admins—for all WH Easter Egg Rolls —incl previous Administration’s,” she reported on Saturday.

Jon Favreau, speechwriter to former President Barack Obama and co-host of the “Pod Save America” podcast, also noticed the implications for the ex-president.

“Also: looks like MAGA God Donald Trump ‘banned religious-themed egg designs’ from the WH contest too, as has every WH for the last 45 years,” Favreau wrote.

White House Deputy Communications Director Herbie Ziskend also drew attention to the statement pointing fingers back at Trump, as did Jesse Lee, a former economic communications official for Biden and a senior advisor to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“For anybody on the fence about buying a Trump Bible to fund his porn star hush money defense, he’s lying about Easter now too so maybe don’t,” Lee wrote Saturday.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?’ If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.

On point.

Oh my what a way with words!!!!!!!!!

…his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.

Ansel started formulating the zone system along with Fred Archer back in 1939. However, he doesn’t claim the idea as his own. It was originally concieved in the late 19th century.

Another from my archive. This is my first ever photo of totality, taken from Klickitat, Washington in February 1979. The Sun was near solar maximum, and showed a lot of prominence activity. It’s again near solar max; let’s hope for a repeat this April 8th! (Most total eclipses don’t show this much—1991 was the only other of the nine I’ve seen)

Kodachrome film developing (K-14) hasn’t been available for quite a while (2009 to be exact), and the chemicals and equipment to process Kodachrome slide film are no longer available. But, we can develop your Kodachrome slide film as black and white and save the pictures trapped on the film.

Save the pictures trapped on your Kodachrome slide film.

Although we can no longer make color slides from your Kodak K-14 Kodachrome film, we can indeed develop it, and we’ll try to save the photos on the film. Instead of color slides, we will make black and white negatives from your Kodachrome rolls.
Note: You will get black and white negatives, not Kodachrome color slides.

TFG is doing these attacks on purpose. If Judge Merchan puts tfg in jail, tfg will claim retaliation for his “free speech” and demand Judge Merchan be tossed from the trail. Then tfg will demand a new trail with a new Judge, to be started a long time in the future. Of course it will take months for the case to raise up to the Supremes and the corrupt court will agree with tfg. And we start all over.

DISGUSTING!

Best Buy offers to screen LGBTQ nonprofit donations after conservative pressure, filing shows

In an email exchange with a conservative think tank, tucked into an SEC filing, the electronics retailer offered to screen its employee groups’ donations to LGBTQ causes.

nbcnews.com

Best Buy offered to screen donations from its employee resource groups going to LGBTQ causes following pressure from a conservative think tank that holds shares in the company, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing made public this week.

The SEC filing contains a monthslong email exchange between the National Center for Public Policy Research, which describes itself as a “nonpartisan, free-market conservative think tank,” and Best Buy. The dialogue, which hasn’t been previously reported, shows how the center said it would make “a splash” unless the consumer electronics giant moved in favor of its demands.

In some of the last correspondence in the filing, Best Buy noted that it allows its employee resource groups “some discretion to directly support organizations of their choosing” but added that “any such contributions would be screened to ensure they do not advocate or support the causes or agendas you have identified as concerning.” One of the causes the NCPPR cited was transgender care for minors, which the group falsely described as an attempt to “mutilate the reproductive organs of children.”

When asked for a request for comment regarding the filing, Carly Charlson, a spokesperson for Best Buy, stated in an email: “At Best Buy, we strongly believe in an inclusive work environment with a culture of belonging where everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to thrive. This commitment is evident through our longstanding and continuing support of organizations like HRC, which has recognized us as one of the best places to work for the LGBTQIA+ community for the past 18 years.”

Criswell Bacon predicts HRC gonna reconsider their decision…

…Before oil, outsiders mostly came to Guyana for eco-tourism, lured by rainforests that cover 87 percent of its land. In 2009, the effort to combat global warming turned this into a new kind of currency when Guyana sold carbon credits totaling $250 million, essentially promising to keep that carbon stored in trees. Guyana’s leadership was praised for this planet-saving effort.

Six years later, Exxon Mobil discovered a bounty of oil under Guyana’s coastal waters. Soon the company and its consortium partners, Hess and the Chinese National Offshore Oil Corporation, began drilling with uncommon speed. The oil, now burned mostly in Europe, is enabling more global emissions — and producing colossal wealth…

…At the same time, climate change laps at Guyana’s shores; much of Georgetown is projected to be underwater by 2030…

Picked my first loquats of the year.

Not from my favorite tree, as this one tends to have very mildly flavored fruit and bit fibrous.

But I’ll eat them later and find out if the extra rain last year and this makes a difference.

I heard the original version in a T-Mobile store in Norman, OK, today because we had to deal with my son’s phone.

I learned something. If you want one of Samsung Galaxy folding phones, you need to go to T-Mobile. The insurance company they used to deal with split in two (I’m not sure why) but they are in competition with each other. If you get their insurance, when you’re phone has something go wrong, walk into a store, pay $5 and walk out with a new phone. And the flips will mess up. The guy who helped us said the Flip and Fold are lasting about six months before something goes wrong.

my fears are a bit different. If these guys were willing to hang Mike Pence, I fully believe that full on violence is not off the books.

I am not convinced that certain GOP sympathetic elements within the Secret Service and FBI have been neutralized, so I would expect coordinated strikes against Biden and Harris a week or two before the election. At this point, control would pass to Johnson (provided he’s still in charge), who would suspend the election instituting a Constitutional Crisis, throwing it to SCOTUS who would put the GOP in charge and then allowing the razor thin margin of the GOP House to declare Trump the de facto President.

This all runs completely against precedent and our laws, but SCOTUS has already shown us that they’ll do whatever the fuck they like.

How likely is this? Pretty unlikely, but then again, I would have said the same about J6.

I honestly believe if Trump was NOT a former President, he would have been jailed by now.

But because he is, and so many in the justice system are afraid of taking the unprecedented step of ordering such a person to jail, he skates again and again and again.

Disagree, if he was not a former president he would not even be on trial right now. The jan 6, documents, and rico cases stem directly from being president. The Stormy Daniels thing is only being charged as a felony because of the underlying campain finance stuff, and I honestly think if he was just another shady real estate developer Letitia James never would have brought that civil case against him, because I do believe there is not a real estate developer in NY who doesn’t play the same games with valuations.

I think that they were honestly surprised to be met with resistance. If the Park Police hadn’t been disarming them for the speech in the park, there likely would have been a LOT more violence as many of them would then have been armed. Remember Trump complained about taking their guns because he KNEW he wasn’t in danger. Then when they got there, with the reduced numbers of the Cap Police on duty, I think they suspected that they would be welcomed as liberators and the fact that there was no lethal force used against them probably made the ringleaders feel that they just had to press the issue and they would capture MOC and Senators and then the real fun could begin.

The idea that once they had the Capitol captured and Trump having the high hand on the forces to be sent to assist or not, for arrests to be made or not, they could have tried to bum rush the false elector scheme and they already had Thomas on the inside to guide that effort. Would the rest of SCOTUS go along? I dunno, but they gutted the VRA and Dobbs, so I think that depending upon SCOTUS to do the “right thing” is not something I would feel great about.

All I know is that there was loads of chatter on plenty of RW social media and even Facebook, right out in the open and the FBI fucking ignored it. It’s not as if elements of the Secret Service have been exonerated since they purged their texts, there were MOC involved and coordinating with the whole affair to keep Congress in session for the coup to take place. Even post J6, the FBI has relied more on crowd sourcing to find participants. I’m not fucking impressed, at all. The DOJ hasn’t exactly exemplified any fucking urgency on the danger to the nation, much less their institution.

Sure, maybe my pants and my hair may be on fire now, but I have heard nothing about how either the FBI or the Secret Service have been purged of fascist leaning employees. Maybe it’s been done on the QT but there has been jack shit that I am aware of indicating that people have been fired., much less prosecuted. Just like the remainder of the J6 plotters, the DOJ may still have irons in the fire, but very few of those brands have been applied to anyone who is still in a position to do harm.

I saw Erik Prince’s mercenaries in action in Iraq. Some of them, like the diplomatic bodyguards, are very good, Delta and SAS types. Most though are just thugs, long on muscle and aggression but short on discipline and imagination. They were more likely than regular troops to get caught up in the insurgents’ various ingenious traps, requiring costly armored and air intervention. I also couldn’t see them handling privation very well at all.

Saw that a couple of weeks ago. Found Dostoyevsky far more difficult than any of these, though one might put the blame on the translators there.

A large number of 19th century works aren’t especially difficult as such, just so different to our modern tastes as to be hard to finish (Moby Dick, The various Leatherstocking Tales, Thomas Hardy)

Joyce and Faulkner are really over rated as “difficult” to me.

The difference is that this time around Biden is POTUS instead of Trump.

I don’t think what I’ve laid out is likely, and I trust that JB and KH are taking precautions. Just know that if there were complacency issues before, I have no idea if the FBI has corrected course.

I also am working under the impression that they’ll try again, here we are 7 months out from another election and who is really in jail? Has anyone really brought these people to heel for their attempted coup? They are STILL telling those lies every goddamned day out on the airwaves and are not paying any particular price for it. The media tap dances around it and does what they can to place their thumbs on the scales.

Will they fuck it up? I sure as hell hope so. I hope that they don’t even try but these guys aren’t exactly right in the head.

Disagree, if he was not a former president he would not even be on trial right now. The jan 6, documents, and rico cases stem directly from being president. The Stormy Daniels thing is only being charged as a felony because of the underlying campain finance stuff, and I honestly think if he was just another shady real estate developer Letitia James never would have brought that civil case against him, because I do believe there is not a real estate developer in NY who doesn’t play the same games with valuations.

that’s why I have long argued that every real estate developer in every major city should be investigated and probably thrown in prison — and income tax evasion should be one of the standard charge against every one

I think the killing of Ashli Babbitt effectively stopped whatever they were planning. They were not expecting to be met with any resistance.

We’ve had 1.4” of rain this go round… it will probably rain tomorrow too, expected another three quarter inch.

Last year was record wet in parts of the county, this year is not as wet but west of the mountains we’re at least 40% above normal.

Loquats are happy - their new leaves are the biggest I’ve seen in a long time.

The central Pacific is slipping from El Nino to neutral. I might even make it into La Nina by year’s end. That will likely flip the precip to the other extreme.

But with the Pacific warming the climate is going to be a bit more tricky to predict.

San Diego’s weather was always among the easiest to predict: sunny and pleasant, morning fog in certain seasons.

By the end of the century I doubt it will be that predictable.

Did you read the two Joyce books listed?

I never read either BUT many years ago I read a sci-fi short story (author, title, and most of plot long forgotten) which involved a priest traveling on a star ship to another system. During the story the priest was studying a book — and excerpts from the book appeared in the text. I thought he was reading some bizarre futuristic novel — but the end it was revealed that the book was actually Finnegan’s Wake. Those excerpts were sufficient to deter me from ever attempting Joyce’s magnum opus (well, either of them).

OTOH The Sound and the Fury was required reading in my mandatory college literature class and I did enjoy it.

Thankfully I didn’t do that 🤣 I’d have been far happier with something easier like paleoanthropology and the necessary field work (at least the army prepared me for _that_ unlike the cut-throats of academia!) or better yet as a fine arts photographer.

It’s James Blish’s A Case of Conscience (the part you mention was published first as a novella), one of the great SF books directly dealing with religion, especially Catholic. It deals with the possibility that pure evil can be creative, rather than simply twist what is created by God. Here the question is if it created a seemingly perfect planet inhabited by peaceful and intelligent species with no concept of God.

As for Finnegan’s Wake, it come to this conclusion: it is “a book [Finnegans Wake] which to all intents and purposes might have been dictated by the Adversary himself … 628 pages of compulsive demoniac chatter.”

The second shingles shot knocked me down, ran temp. Don’t usually run a temp. However, if it keeps me from ever getting shingles, I will take it and gladly.

I’ve had shingles already, 12 years ago. It was a rash slightly smaller than a quarter on my right shin. I stupidly didn’t recognize what it was, except that it hurt like hell and I had to wear skirts or baggy pants made out of sheeting because anything heavier made me want to scream. It hurt more than the root canal I’d had a few months previously that made my mouth swell up. When I finally went to Dr. Google and looked at pictures of shingles rashes, it was too late to get anything to deal with the pain. Oh, but my insurance wouldn’t pay (then) for a 52 YO woman to get shingles shots, so I went without. Now CVS is all “you wanna shingles shot? how about Covid? how about RSV? Do you need a TDAP booster?”

Yeah, I never want to have shingles again, TYVM.

Good because the attack on DEI is a cute way of saying that no Black or Brown person is qualified to hold a high paying, prestigious or professional position. If we do (which many of us do) hold such positions, it’s only because of affirmative action or some other illegitimate reason.
How any Black person is still supporting Republicans is beyond me. I assume that if Trump wins, he will find a way of kicking Black federal employees out of their positions.

The churches are starting to lay the grounds of their own doom. I presume people are recording these sermons and at some point their blatant partisan political activism might make someone in power decide that it’s worth the political and social cost to unleash the IRS on them to strip them of their tax exempt status.
(Edit: Slight assumption here that most of this is conservative activism and there are not many examples of liberal churches preaching partisan Democrat sermons. This might tempt a centrist-left government to address this since it’s attacking what is essentially an enemy powerbase.)

I personally would like a level playing field where religious institutions are subject to the exact same rule set as any other 501C charitable organization. There is some financial reporting to be done and also some pretty clear rules on what they can advocate about, spend money on, etc. etc. And a number of states have laws in place granting charitable organizations some tax breaks for limited property holdings. It’s one reason a lot of college fraternal organization are headquartered in Indiana.

re: #221 Eclectic Cyborg

In the Deep South, you’re generally expected to go to church on Easter even if you don’t regularly attend.

In my case, Ms. Cyborg and I primarily went because it’s important to her Aunt (who has been Ms. Cyborg’s primary maternal figure since my MIL passed in 2022).

So for that, I put on a smile and went.

For the second year in a row, Wife has not attended our way-too-Southern RC church. Her explicit reason is the anti-Christian bullshit spread on parish Facebook and Instagram messaging. There is a congregation of progressive nuns about 50 miles from here, but they are shutting down. We support them and their co-conspirators on The Bus.

I’m about ready to head out for a busy day; I’ve been tabbed to volunteer at church for the Easter Sunday crew, with 6 services on deck. I hope you all have a quiet and relaxing day today, regardless of whether you celebrate or not. Because unlike many people who will be walking through those church doors today, I don’t think forcing my religion down your throats is the right way to go about it.

Blessed Easter, and bless the ones like you who do their quiet best to follow the Word.
I hope you come home to a good Easter dinner, and a chance to enjoy some well-earned rest after this busy morning.

One of the many reasons I’m not a theist.

Because religion is a power/control system that uses the immaterial as a justification for the reification of the material order: it invents distinctions and hierarchy that are “real” on the basis of spirit matters. Christianity fairly rapidly develops from a marginal practice of outliers to a religion re-structured to justify emperors and kings, and as a consequence it’s theology is synonymous with the needs of absolute power.

For this Christianity to make sense and thus retain followers…and thus grasp and hold power…Judaism cannot be validly interpreting the nature of God. Since Christianity is derivative from Judaism this cannot be done by calling them pagan, so it’s achieved by inventing the theocide.

I read a bunch of the Russian novels and found them much easier and more satisfying due to having a plot and characterization and such.

Oh, I get the utility of the endeavor, but I cannot see how it is persuasive to anyone. If the death of Jesus was the purpose of Jesus coming to Earth in the first place, then according to their own myth, it was never going to go any other way, and in fact that was the plan.

Of course, this brings up the question of why it would require a death and resurrection to forgive us of sins that an omniscient god already knows we’ll commit, and which of us will become followers and which won’t, even ones not born for thousands and millions of years, but I digress. Why the need for the convoluted plan? If a benign god wants to forgive me for excessive masturbation or putting my naughty bits where a book says I shouldn’t, She can. Or not. No need for games, Yahweh.
