CL’d, pbuh

It’s two decades off, but the next total solar eclipse to transit the United States, my house is in the path of totality. If you ever wanted to see a total solar eclipse from the top of a mountain, 2044 is your year.

If you aren’t hip to neo-Nazi lingo, “8/8” corresponds to the eighth letter of the alphabet twice, which corresponds to “Heil Hitler.”

Get it?

If I have to know this, so do you.

Speaking of companies… is anyone else having problems with the US Amazon splash page or product pages today?

It’s been unusually slow for me.

Unless you’ve moved way north, you’re not in totality for 2044. It only hits ND and Montana.

re: #10 teleskiguy

Oh wow! I keep thinking of 2045 mostly as Florida (because at 73, I will probably be retired down there), but a mountaintop in Colorado sounds pretty badass as a viewing site.

This was a weird one here - we got socked in with clouds at the worst time, they didn’t clear as I had hoped, and so it was a very dark, very ominous and eerie experience, much less celebratory than 2017 felt.

Still very powerful and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world, but a weird one.

And as the only total solar eclipse to pass over my house and hometown in my lifetime, I didn’t want to travel anywhere else for it, especially since I was part of the task force planning events here and actively involved in media coverage.

Not the first time, either.

His campaign manager compared his 2020 campaign to the Death Star powering up (of course we remember what happened to the Death Star).

And they posted a meme of Trump as Thanos, apparently completely ignorant of what happened to Thanos at that point in the movie (he got his ass kicked by the Avengers).

I was in a tin can made by Boeing hurtling through the atmosphere at 450 mph. The pilots said they would be flying through the path of the totality, which they did, but the eclipse was way over by that time. I wouldn’t have been able to see anything because how much can you see out of an airplane porthole?

” Democratic Gov. Tony Evers on Monday vetoed a Republican bill that would have allowed 14- and 15-year-olds in Wisconsin to work without getting consent from their parents or a state permit. …
… Evers said he vetoed the bill because he objected to eliminating a process that ensures children are protected from employers who may exploit them or subject them to dangerous conditions. Republicans don’t have the votes to override the veto. …”

I wasn’t in the path of totality, but off by 150 miles or so. Still, it was a glorious day. Sunny, 75°, slight breeze. I didn’t try to look at it (no glasses), but my son and I sat on the porch and watch it get quiet, darken, and the shadows get strange. Then it got really dark, and the light was very abnormal. So I experienced it, and loved the experience. Plus I got my yard mowed for the first time this year. What’s not to like?

Sad to see Jackie and Shadow (Bear Valley eagles) slowly letting go of their 3 eggs. Jackie would always have night duty but she’s been losing interest and Shadow has spent two nights sitting on them. It seems he’s the one having a more difficult time letting go. Hope they’re successful next year.

From Anne:

It is a fact universally acknowledged that Pastor Mike Johnson couldn’t organize a drinkfest in a brewery, but it’s also becoming ever clearer that he was chosen as House Speaker by the GOP because he’s just that incompetent. And he knows it, the nasty little beetle! Which doesn’t mean he won’t whine about it, because whining is one of the last remaining Republican skills.

The Senate passed a bipartisan bill which addressed immigration and Johnson rejected it and refused to even bring it to a vote. He can shut up with the performative nonsense.
