Video: Appeals Judge Denies Trump’s Attempt to Challenge Gag Order Before Trial

Law • Views: 14,247

Trump is pulling out all the stops trying to delay his criminal trial; his latest tactic is a claim that he should be able to attack, smear, and incite violence against anyone he wants and the New York court’s gag order should be revoked.

DENIED.

An appeals court judge has denied former President Donald Trump’s request to delay the start of his New York hush money trial so he can challenge the gag order imposed by Judge Juan Merchan. #CNN #News

He paid money to hush others, now others gag him for free? Life is so unfair.

OH NO!

Will the Arizona GOP soon be…HOMELESS???

axios.com

The AZGOP is selling the headquarters it bought 9 months ago

After just nine months, the Arizona Republican Party’s new headquarters is about to become its old headquarters.

Why it matters: The building on Central Avenue across from Park Central mall has major financial and logistical downsides that could have hindered the party in an election year, chair Gina Swoboda tells Axios.
The party’s leadership voted overwhelmingly on Saturday to sell the office space.
The big picture: The AZGOP has been plagued by dysfunction and poor fundraising over the past few years, just as it attempts to fight back against recent Democratic political gains.

Swoboda, who was elected in January, said fundraising is going well and she has no concerns.
Zoom in: Currently, the party is paying about $11,300 monthly in HOA fees for the space.

And because people can’t get to the third-floor space without a badge, it’s inaccessible to volunteers and others.
Both factors make it difficult for the party to help campaigns and carry out get-out-the-vote activities.
Catch up quick: The party purchased the space for $1.9 million last June under the leadership of former chair Jeff DeWit, who resigned in January.

DeWit planned to lease out some of the 12,000 square feet to conservative groups and Republican campaigns, but some of it remains vacant.
The intrigue: GOP organizations in Arizona and other battleground states have been in shambles — and it could benefit Democrats — former George W. Bush political guru Karl Rove said Monday on an ASU panel before the news of the sale.

AIN’T THAT A SHAME….

Well this fucking sucks.

Ms. Cyborg spent about 90 minutes in a doctors office this morning and when she came out, there was a damage to one of the rear windows of our SUV that wasn’t there when she arrived.

Not clue what happened but I don’t think it was an attempted break in. Looks more like it got hit by a rock or other flying object.

My insurance won’t cover it so I’ll be out of pocket almost $500 for the repair.

Yay Monday. 🙄

The problem is that current Maricopa County district attorney, Rachel Mitchell, is a R and she has said she won’t prosecute. But she was opposed to the governor’s executive order taking those prosecutions away from county district attorneys. We’re in a bad place here.

The old law is still stayed for now, but if it does go into effect, I would advise any abortion clinic to shut down in Arizona. The sliver lining is that there is an abortion rights referendum on the ballot in November, so that is another swing state which should see a surge in women and young voters.

I wonder what brought this about—a drop in church attendance…or a reduced cash flow due to people flipping the bird to right wing churches?

New Testament scholar Richard Hays now says God’s cool with gay people

friendlyatheist.com

Richard Hays is considered one of the most famous New Testament scholars in the world. In 2000, Christianity Today named his Moral Vision of the New Testament one of their “Books of the Century.” That book, published in 1996, covered how Christians ought to think about various hot-button issues, including homosexuality.

And Hays was most certainly not an ally.

Now, Richard Hays has written another book alongside his son Christopher. Scheduled to be published in September, The Widening of God’s Mercy is all about how Christians should think about homosexuality. It would seem like a safe assumption that the Hays are just elaborating on what Richard wrote nearly three decades ago.

But that would be wrong.

According to the book’s description, which has been zipping around Christian circles, Richard has had a “change of heart and mind”:

I got a feeling that for this bible thumper it’s all about the tax-exempt cash.

Back to wohl and Burkman for a minute. This $1.25 million is not their first rodeo

Burkman, a Washington lawyer and Republican operative, was stripped of his law license in March by the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

He and Wohl pleaded guilty in October 2022 to telecommunications fraud in Ohio after using robocalls to intimidate people from voting by mail during the 2020 presidential election. They were sentenced to two years of probation, each fined $2,500 and ordered to do 500 hours of community service.

In June 2023, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined Burkman and Wohl $5.1 million for making more than 1,100 unlawful robocalls in August and September 2020.

yahoo.com

As to where they’re coming up with the money, who knows.

But, according to their lawyer (this is hilarious/and what careers would those be?):

A New York lawyer for Burkman and Wohl, David Schwartz, said his clients were pleased to have a settlement and put this case behind them so they can focus on their families and careers.

I think it just underscores that a book comprised of dozens of smaller books, written by dozens if not thousands of authors over time, can be used to back any position you want. If a person wants to use the bible to be a bigot, they can. If they think that’s a losing position, then poof! They can have a change of heart and find the part of the bible that backs that up, too!

On Confederate Surrender Day I’m thinking about my great great grandfather who, in 1917, tried to *shoot his neighbor* for flying the stars and bars in Oakland, CA.

“…April 9th, 1865, was the end of the Civil War for General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. For Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant and tens of thousands of Federal and Confederate troops fighting further south, the war stretched out for several more months. After Appomattox, however, only the most zealous and desperate could pretend the Union was not already victorious and the Confederacy was destined to end.”

I tested the ‘Free TV’ that got the internet buzzing and it was far better than expected

When I first heard about the Telly program — which offers a completely free 55-inch television if you’re willing to view some ads — I was decidedly uninterested. When a decent enough 55-inch smart television can be had for under $400, why bother with one that’s going to drown me with ads?

The allure of a free TV and simple curiosity got the better of me though and I applied for the program in June. I had mostly forgotten about it until mid-December when I got an email asking me to complete my order because I’d been accepted into the beta program.

And now, after more than a month with Telly, I don’t regret signing up at all.

Before we get into the technical part, I want to point out that this is the heaviest TV I’ve encountered in a long time. It was the only TV I’ve ever had delivered by two people. But, that makes sense given the addition of a second screen. The bottom screen also means it’s a good bit taller than all other TVs — almost 40 inches — so you’ll need a lower stand.

When I first fired up my set, an ad for a credit app played on the main screen. The bottom screen showed the weather, NFL scores, a news article, a scrolling news ticker, and an advertisement for a local hospital. The advertisement took up about a fifth of the bottom screen.

My first thought was “That’s it?”

The ads weren’t nearly as intrusive as I expected. The ad on the bottom does occasionally stretch to fill up the whole second screen, but it’s not often. And Telly understands what you’re watching — say, an NFL game, and displays relevant ads.
I was quickly able to navigate to where I wanted to on the main screen, and the rotating ad on the bottom screen fit nicely beside the rest of the information… information I started to find useful.

I was in rooms & meetings for 30+ years with Repubs in the south who all said life begins at conception, abortion is murder, & all abortion should be banned. Now a hustler & con man from NYC needs to win an election to stay out of prison & they’re talking about states rights.

States Rights advocates also gave us the Fugitive Slave Act

If the Republicans actually supported States Rights, I could respect that.

But they don’t. They only fall back on the “States rights” bullshit when the Federal Government does something that goes against their fascist Christian nationalist worldview.

Recall how pissed the usual suspects got after Michigan and Ohio passed ballot initiatives supporting abortion. Where the fuck was their States Rights support then?

I have returned from my eclipse-viewing sojourn into the heart of wingnut country. I will say this: Their political ads all focused on one thing: Black Lives Matter. Literally every political commercial for the Republicans came down to, “X politician supports BLM and wants to defund the police.” Looks like the racism card is the last one they have left to play. How have things been among the lizardfolk in my absence?

In a sense, the courts are doing exactly as they should be doing: “This is what you voted for. This is what you get. You don’t like it, vote for people who will legislate the change. Understand that if you are consistently indifferent to voting, things are going to happen that you aren’t going to be indifferent about.”

Except that we should not have SCOTUS judges accepting lavish financial favors from parties they rule on.

James Comer threatened with ethics probe after hawking impeachment book

The GOP-led House Oversight Committee’s effort to impeach President Joe Biden is effectively over after its chairman, Rep. James Comer (R-KY), failed to find any smoking gun evidence directly tying Biden to any crime.

Now, a Washington-based ethics watchdog group is accusing Comer of capitalizing on his unsuccessful impeachment saga.

In an official letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics, a nonprofit anti-corruption group is requesting an update on whether the Kentucky Republican followed the law and requested prior approval for a book deal currently being negotiated with publishers.

Running against BLM in 2024?
It’s been ten years since Ferguson and our police forces are just as militaristic and well-funded and above-the-law as ever.

Meanwhile, white Republicans, when was the last time you saw an organized BLM protest against police overreach and brutality?

Update you playbooks. The “subversive” Left - especially the white Left - is now “All Palestine, All the Time.”
