I’m afraid many young people do not appreciate how governance work.

And I too often come across young people posting comments that appear to say they really do not want democracy at all. They expect Biden to act like a dictator and just make things happen by decree.

Hard line Progressives have always wanted a dictator. When hardline Conservatives get power, they want a monarch. When hardline Progressives have had power, they want a Committee of Public Safety. Totalitarian comtrol in any case.

I also think it is the media only showing us the crazy ones, of which there is always a small percentage. The ones who understand, say so and become a dog bites man story. No clicks there.

Young voters aren’t warming up to Biden. They know it means Trump could win again.

Love young women who think that Biden is barely better than Trump. Or this one, echoing EVERY single progressive the last 30 years:

She blames the Democrats for the current abortion problems. And somehow wants the student debt fixed. And beleives that Trump woll not really damage our democracy and that we will have a chance for Democrats to win again. Luckily she is in Tennessee so her vote really will not make a difference. What an idiot.

The media will always be able to find some, or Williamson would not have lasted as long as she did. But most young Democrats know what is happening and know which party gives then a better chance at getting to where they want to go.

Update from the Economist tracking poll of Biden’s Approval. It graphs net approval. We can talk about individual polls but following one poll that keeps the same protocol lets us look at trends, which is more interesting.

Here is the latest overall, comparing Obama and Trump at the same number of days:

Biden Net Approval compared with Trump and Obama

We can see a sharp turn positive since the SOTU. He is even now while Obama was -4% and Trump is -8%. Biden is at the highest numbers since over 600 days ago.

Look at race, we see similarly that his polling amongst African-Americans is at its highest in more than 600 days. Same with Whites. And Hispanics are on the right trend.

Biden Net Approval by Race

Now let’s look at age.

Biden Net Approval by Age

Biden is at his highest net approval ever for those under 30. And it has gone up +19% since the SOTU. For 30-44, it has been over 600 days since it was this high. Also up 11% since SOTU. And the other age groups are now trending nicely.

I’m feeling better. Biden is doing better than Obama at the same period. He is consolidating the groups he needs to and is seeing positive movement almost everywhere.

If those polling trends continue (knock on wood), I figure by mid-to-late September, we’ll be reading articles about interviews with anonymous but well-placed GOP insiders who acknowledge they’re facing an electoral disaster - and there’s nothing they can do to stop it.

Depending on how old yours is, there have been some nice improvements. Though I will say, if I had to choose, my favorite feature is that I can create a bunch of tabs, write stuff in them, and Notepad++ will remember them if I close and reopen the app without having to save them to files first. It is also the ratfucking subterfuge and chaos that concerns me: disqualifying votes, “losing” or damaging results, etc…they are working furiously at every angle and everything points at them trying to cause so much disruption that the election goes to the House delegations and/or the SCOTUS, which are their only real chances to win.

We should make Mondays optional.

Germany likes long weekends: Easter Monday and Pentecost Monday are always holidays. And they have two religious holidays that always fall on a Thursday: Ascension and Corpus Christi, so most people just take one of their 20-odd days of paid holiday and make a long weekend out of it.

For that, they do not give you the Monday off if a holiday falls on a weekend.

Very tragic accident, and hindsight is always 20/20.

The Long Island doctor who fatally fell out of her family’s moving Airstream loved the trailer so much that she nicknamed it and used to sleep there even when it was parked in their driveway.

Tragic well-known pediatrician Monika Woroniecka, 58, dubbed her and her husband’s shiny new silver RV “Nebula” because “it represented adventure and exploration,” said shattered daughter Helena Woroniecka — who witnessed her mother’s “crazy accident” Saturday afternoon as the family headed through upstate New York to watch the solar eclipse.

snip

Helena was lying in the bed in the Airstream when her mom went to “secure” the door — and was still clutching the handle when the door suddenly flung open and hurled her onto the pavement, state police said.

Officials at Airstream, the trailer’s manufacturer, said in a statement this week that their products “are not designed to carry passengers while in motion.”

New York state law also prohibits anyone from riding inside a trailer while it is being pulled by a separate vehicle.

Some states allow riding in fifth wheel trailers, but not bumper pulls, I believe.

The demand for canned meat goods is “on fire” as Americans work to cut spending, according to Reuters.

Numerous brands, including Conagra Brands, Kraft Heinz and Nissin Foods, are reportedly marketing cheaper goods as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants turn toward cooking from scratch and eating leftovers. That shift has caused protein-packed goods to excel recently, according to industry experts.

“We have a large canned-meat portfolio,” Bob Nolan, Conagra’s Senior Vice President of Demand Science, told Reuters. “It’s on fire.”

A 4.6 oz tin of Congra’s Armour Star Vienna sausages is currently sold for $1 at Walgreens, according to Reuters. The company will reportedly also introduced new Banquet chicken patties priced at $6.99 for six to appeal to consumers who cannot afford fast food.

snip

The trend comes as some restaurant chains have seen a decrease in lower and middle class customers. Darden, the parent company of Olive Garden, revealed last month a drop in sales from the demographics.
“Transactions from incomes below $75,000 were much lower than last year, and at every brand, transactions fell from incomes below $50,000,” CEO Ricardo Cardenas said.
Cardenas stated the company was witnessing a shift in consumer behavior, with lower-income guests staying away from eating out

Heroes walk among us.

Five sorority sisters from the University of Georgia are being hailed as heroes for saving a mom and her two children after the woman’s SUV fell 135 feet into a creek and began to sink.

The college students were en route from Athens, where the university is located, to Savannah for a girls’ weekend last Friday when they came across the accident in Burke County, according to Fox affiliate WAGA-TV.

“We were kind of just driving down in this part of Georgia, a very rural area, and we were approaching this bridge that was probably about, like, two stories above the creek below,” Molly McCollum told the news station.

But after they “observed a white SUV leave the roadway and roll over into the creek,” the police said, the women stopped.

snip

“Once the car came to a stop, and I realized I was in the water,” Craft told WRDW-TV. “All I was thinking is like I have to get out and get my kids out.”

The group of women managed to get Craft’s 8-year-old out of the car, but her younger son was submerged for several minutes before the women got him out of the water.

“We see the mom pop out of the car, and we’re just like, just tag teaming trying to get the children out of the water,” McCollum recalled to WAGA-TV. “The smaller kid, he was four years old, he was like fully under for like we think about four to five minutes.”

Thankfully, Jones knew CPR from her previous work as a lifeguard in high school, she said.
“I didn’t have time to swim up to the shore or anything,” Jones told WRDW-TV. “So I just sat on a tire and I laid him out on the side of the car that wasn’t under the water yet and performed CPR. Then eventually he came to and started crying and breathing. It was a really surreal experience.”

RFK Jr. campaign official attended Jan. 6 ‘Stop the Steal’ rally and wanted ‘favorite President’ Trump to run for third term

According to a KFILE examination of those now-private posts, Palma also posed for a photo at the former Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC, alongside Sidney Powell - the pro-Trump attorney who pleaded guilty in Georgia’s election subversion case.

In February 2021, Palma tweeted her support for Trump as a presidential candidate in 2024 and even asked whether he could run for a third term in 2028 - which is not constitutionally allowed as a president can serve only two full terms.

re the $175M bond, i dont think this is how any of it works

But according to former regulators and other legal experts, the bond is highly irregular. Per a legal filing, it amounts to little more than a promise that Trump himself could pay the full cost of the bond if he ultimately loses his appeal, The Daily Beast reported, noting that such an arrangement effectively negates “the whole point of an insurance company guarantee.”

It does not appear that Knight Specialty Insurance Co. could even cover the bond if it wanted: according to a court filing, the company has financial reserves of just $138 million. And while a related corporate entity claims a financial surplus of $1 billion, the court filing does not explicitly state that it would be liable.

“Based on the financial statement provided, Knight Specialty is providing a bond that is one-third of its total assets and greater than its surplus, which is incomprehensible for a carrier to underwrite,” Maria T. Vullo, a law professor at Fordham University who previously served as New York’s top financial regulator, told the publication.

Indeed, experts who reviewed the bond filing said it appears to state that it is “Donald J. Trump” who “shall pay” any bond, an arrangement that is far from normal.

“The only way that Trump can even, remote possibility of taking New York is if Bobby is on the ballot. If it’s Trump versus Biden, Biden wins. Biden wins six days, seven days a week. With Bobby in the mix, anything can happen,” Palma said in a meeting with New York Republicans.

But it has since become clear that Palma has deeper ties to Donald Trump. In social media posts analyzed by CNN, the staffer has repeatedly called the GOP presidential nominee her “favorite president,” said she would vote for him in 2024 while also suggesting a 2028 run, blamed the “rigged election” for the violence on January 6, and even admitted to being in attendance on the day that Trump supporters seized the U.S. Capitol.

“Jan 6 was not a riot. A small group of people were trouble. It was 99.9 peaceful, respectful. I was there,” she wrote.

Over the last week, Kennedy’s campaign has flip-flopped more than once on its January 6 messaging. On Thursday, the independent presidential candidate issued a fundraising email referring to the rioters as “activists.” The next day, Kennedy claimed that particular language was made in error but he still didn’t believe the event amounted to a “true insurrection” since the rioters didn’t wield weapons—though that is completely false, since the rioters did wield weapons and can be seen doing so in mountains of recorded video from the day.

The rioters attacked Capitol Police officers with firearms, knives, stolen police shields, stun guns, fire extinguishers, and even used hand-to-hand combat, which sent more than a dozen officers to the hospital.

Then, on Monday, Kennedy appeared to backtrack again on the correction. Appearing on NewsNation, the 70-year-old claimed that his campaign had made “a couple of mistakes” in issuing the revised statement while again insisting that the events weren’t an insurrection.

“I think that there were people who were there who wanted to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another. I would say it was a very traumatic day in our nation’s history and people committed criminal acts. Those people deserve to be in jail,” Kennedy said.

This is in the class of asked/answered - and should result in sanctions for wasting the time of the courts. They’ve tried delaying and getting Merchan to recuse, despite an inability to articulate a cogent legal theory, let alone facts, to do so.

Trump knows that if this goes to trial and the jury, he’s going to be found guilty - he doesn’t have a defense. He knows he’s guilty (even if he claims he did nothing wrong).

According to NBC DT says AZ abortion ruling went too far.

Yeah, how dare the AZ legislature ban abortions. Trump wants to take credit for that. This is all linked back to Trump’s ascendancy and packing the SCOTUS with right wing extremists who overturned Roe. Overturning Roe via Dobbs meant that all the right wing extremists in the state courts were free to overturn and implement their own abortion bans, which go from full bans to bans after a period of time, as well as attacks/bans on IVF and other reproductive care options for women.

He’s trying to dissemble and have it both ways.

He supported overturning Roe. This is the consequence of that action. This is on him and the misogynstic Christian fascist GOP.

That’s how this must be framed.

For clarification: Alabama and Ohio sent letters saying the Democratic National Convention is too late, and that the candidate has to be certified before the selected convention date in order to appear on their ballots. This is a technicality, a stupid one, and one which the state legislatures have routinely waived in the past. There is a possibility they do not waive the requirement this year, because Republicans are hyper-partisan assholes, but there are many ways to deal with the problem. I would not worry about Biden being on the ballot in Alabama and Ohio.

Looks like they took a comedic “horror” film and converted it to a true horror movie. At least that’s the vibes from the trailer.

I watched that trailer, and the Superman trailer posted right after, and I got the feeling that they are not real trailers but AI generated fakes.

They are threatening to. I assume they will figure something out, not as though Biden can win Ohio anyway.

Even if he can’t, if he’s not on the ballot it may affect downstream races — like, e.g. the Senate.

Yeah, they’ve obviously gone in a different direction for her in this film - looks like she’s an institutionalized patient, along with Joker.

Still, these are wholly fictional characters, so there’s almost infinite opportunities to offer a fresh take on well-known character. Provided it’s done well, I have no issues with it.

it could be interesting because it clearly changes the dynamic between Joker and Harley. but as always, it will come down to what story they are telling and how they are telling it. but I’d lay heavy odds that there are already comic book dudebros complaining about this.

I just did that—and really, I would suggest upgrading from the official app. There are reasons you want to upgrade…maybe not right away, but the app may be patching holes you’re not aware of.

Point taken and I just did.

Or seeing what size the Iranian attack will be, and decide after?

Will Biden be on the Ohio ballot? Aren’t they keeping him off?

i know we dont like to say ‘never’
but this will never happen.
not in ohio or alabama
no state will keep biden off the ballot
certainly not for this nonsense

the states have a history of ignoring and accommodating the calendar and the conventions.

and in the past it was mostly for R’s

they’re not gonna be able to say ‘now it matters’

It’s a beautiful thing. A 30 cent bump yesterday made shorts a touch cheaper, and they’re back in force today.

Tomorrow it can pop up 50 cents…then we’ll see what Friday can bring as it’ll be the last close before jury selection begins Monday.

Conflating Hamas with Iran is Bibi’s way of justifying cleansing Gaza of Palestinians in general. He wants all of that oceanfront property for Israel.

Oh, I’m sure there’s already some grumbling. And not just about reimagining Harley Quinn, but because there’s obviously musical numbers involved.

Of course, I haven’t seen this film (no one has) but my gut tells me this might be better than the film the preceded it. My primary critique of Joker was that the plot was derivative of earlier films, particularly Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy.

That having been said, Joaquin Phoenix absolutely nailed his performance and basically carried the film. He earned his Oscar.

Power makes their dicks hard. Then they need to do something with them. It’s a story as old as civilization.

re: #206 Nerdy Fish

Especially since they have to know they have no shot here. Their defense basically hinges on him being treated as special because he used to be President of the United States, but so far, most courts (excepting the Calvinball Court) aren’t about to entertain that notion.

I have to disagree with this, in order for them to get the felony charges they have to prove the underlying felony, being that Stormy was paid off to effect the election, and not to hide it from his wife or just to generally protect his reputation. Proving intent is hard, that’s why John Edwards got off and the DoJ and FEC and previous manhattan DA chose not to bring charges. It is a Manhattan jury so I think he is more likely than not to be convicted, but it isn’t a slam dunk by any stretch.

It’s not as though Truth Social was some real company that had a real value. Other social media companies have a real client base; Threads may not be worth much on its own but its parent Meta definitely has substantial assets, at least for now. Truth Social’s only purpose was to post Trump rants. X is the real Truth Social platform that promotes the voice of the Trump cult. Trump cult members who want visibility aren’t using the Trump platform — they all use X where they can engage with the opposition. If a Trumpster posts on Truth Social, they are silent to the larger community, because Truth Social made every effort to keep others off the site.

Could Elmo decide to buy Truth Social and incorporate it into his platform? It’s not as though any of those who own a share of his company would object to the acquisition and it’s not a major cost. That would provide Trump with a needed flow of funds and make him a real billionaire.

A few felony convictions can change things.
