They took a lunch break and Dozy Don didn’t dash out and grab the cameras…I wonder if it’s dawning on him that this isn’t a civil case where he can get away with whatever he wants.

He looks….defeated. Tired and broken, and though he’s certainly no stranger to being a defendant in a civil trial, this time it’s a criminal trial and all his bluster and bullshit, his usual way of worming out of trouble, failed him.

If we aren’t sleeping well with this seditious treasonweasel running for office and an entire political party in thrall to this criminal, then he shouldn’t be sleeping well knowing that he’s about to face justice for his criminal conduct (or at least a fraction of the crimes we know about have indicted for).

Which is to be expected. Political affiliation should, in theory, not have anything to do with one’s ability to deliberate on justice. While in reality, the vast majority of Republicans are brain-washed cultists, it would look really bad if the Court started explicitly refusing to seat Republicans for juries in criminal trials involving the Republican Party nominee.

BERLIN, April 15 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) told staff it is laying off more than 10% of its global workforce, an internal memo seen by Reuters on Monday shows, as it grapples with falling sales and an intensifying price war for electric vehicles (EVs).
In response to commentary on the news on X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted: “About every five years, we need to reorganize and streamline the company for the next phase of growth.”

Musk last announced a round of job cuts in 2022, after telling executives he had a “super bad feeling” about the economy. Tesla never outlined how many jobs it cut in 2022, but its employee headcount has risen from around 100,000 in late 2021 to over 140,000 in late 2023, according to SEC filings.

Monday’s dismissals were effective immediately, according to a copy of the email sent to laid off employees seen by Reuters.

They’ve been deliberately dancing around holding him in contempt the whole fucking time he’s been under indictment. Nobody’s going to do anything about it. If they do, it’s just going to be inconsequential fines that he could pay straight out of his wallet. The justice system is just not set up to actually punish a man like Trump.

“…Scientists can measure the oxygen isotopes in dental enamel to determine where in the world long-dead people were born. From the Bronze Age through to the medieval period, we’re finding people buried in British graves who were born in Asia and Africa. That number peaked, unsurprisingly, during the Roman period, but never falls to zero throughout the Middle Ages.”

For no apparent reason, I present a picture of a rechargeable pacemaker from the early 70’s (Pacesetter was bought by St Jude Medical which subsequently was purchased by Abbott). These bad boys were “on demand” and had a set pacing rate - allowed your heart to beat above a set rate without pacing but paced your heart if went below that rate. If you had complete heart block, your heart would always be paced at the same rate. You’re asleep? Pace at 72bpm. You trying to chase the neighbor kids off of your lawn? Pace at 72bpm.

No one makes a rechargeable pacemaker anymore - current battery technology allows 10+ years of pacing (and sensing and telemetry) off of a fixed-cell battery. Longest documented life of a working pacemaker is > 37 years (guinnessworldrecords.com), though I suspect he either paced very infrequently or it was nuclear powered (osrp.lanl.gov).

Expect Trump to not only bristle at that reference, but insist his lawyers file a motion to recuse based on the lack of calling him (former/ex) president.

Court can be pretty boring, but seeing Trump’s attorney’s put dotted ping pong balls on his eyelids so he looks awake while they keep him sedated with over the counter cold meds would have me reaching for my credit card and shelling out for pay-per-view.

Yup. If you’re in the jury pool, they’re in a separate area until they get called to any of the courtrooms requiring a jury be seated, and that’s when they learn the details or the parties involved.

Those in the courthouse today had to know there was a chance they’d get called for Trump’s case though. The courts also asked for extra people to be available as jurors because of the likelihood that many would be excused due to prejudicial beliefs about Trump.

I know that I couldn’t sit on his jury (if I were living in Manhattan and called), mostly b/c I have a lengthy online history that could be linked back to me, even if I can indicate that I can be impartial and follow the facts and the law.

It’s also a ready-made excuse for those freaked out at the prospect of being on such a hugely consequential case (not that I can blame them, especially if they’re afraid of becoming targets for violent Maga chuds).

Last time I was a prospective juror, one guy pipes up saying he was so excited about being a juror and he really really really wanted to have the experience. He was excused. As was I, either because I said I was an engineer or because I audibly gasped at how many hands were raised when they asked the panel “who has been charged or convicted of a crime?”.

Most people are probably hoping for a short case(like the one time I was a juror) that will be over by the end of the day and not one with weeks-long commitment. Mine was one of those stupid cases that clog the courtroom and would be better handled by Judge Judy.

re: #102 Hecuba’s daughter

I’d say the timeline is that it takes this week and next to do voir dire. Opening statements start on April 29, and trial takes 2-3 weeks. Closing statements by Memorial Day. Deliberations and verdict within 2-3 days after that (and yeah, I’m thinking it might take a few days to go through all the charges, even though they’re essentially the same crime).

104
lawhawk  Apr 15, 2024 • 12:52:02pm

Trumpworld and the RNC are fundraising off the trial, as per my spam folder.

Fucking hilarious. Yeah, Trump is on trial for his criminal conduct, and the GOP and RNC think he’s a suitable nominee for being president. The entire party is off the rails and in cult terrain. They think it’s a witch hunt and projecting their own election interference on those trying to hold him accountable for his crime spree.

Oh for the good old days where simply being caught on a hot mike saying ARGH! would be enough to end your campaign (Dean), an affair (any number of people, including Edwards, Gary Hart, etc.), or similar nonsense. Actual criminal conduct would be disqualifying until Trump. Now, they are fundraising to try and end democracy.

Amanda Marcotte:
As a lifelong lover of the English language, I’m being slowly driven mad by one word that haunts the news coverage these days: “affair.”

“…the word “affair” is misleading. Yes, an affair is illicit by definition, and quite likely a bad idea. But an affair is also exciting, erotic, possibly even romantic. An affair suggests two people who can’t keep their hands off each other, despite knowing it’s wrong. None of this comes close to describing the nauseating single encounter that Daniels has described, whether to journalists or in her memoir. She has insisted, repeatedly, that she did not want to have sex with Trump and gave in because it seemed easier than resisting his advances.

……….
Trump’s conduct with women makes clear that he’s both a bully and a coward, who victimizes vulnerable people in situations where they have no real way to fight back. It also undermines his lifelong effort to portray himself as an irresistible Lothario and sexual dynamo. The ladies don’t swoon over Donald Trump. They spend every minute wondering when it will be safe to wriggle free from his stubby fingers.”

It’s also a huge time commitment. This will take a while. People have lives and responsibilities. Not everyone can take a month break to sit in court. So saying that you couldn’t be impartial is an easy out.

Of course it is clear to everyone that Trump is cataloguing revenge targets when he takes the White House again. Everyone knows he will seek personal revenge against everyone. This is what this election is all about. - the ability for one man to hijack an entire superpower to seek his own personal agenda of revenge and grievance at the expense of everyone and anything that ever stood against him and his ambitions.

Tesla should have never built the X, the 3 or the Cybertruck. Should have gone straight from the S to the Y and then built a modular panel van with a Kei-class truck rear bed option.

That’s why one of my pet peeves is the modern usage of decimate as a synonym for “wipe out”. No, it’s only 10%. What makes it shocking is that it was a possible Roman military discipline.
