As I previously wrote, while it might be churlish to suggest that the gift was devoid of genuine altruistic impulses, it would be naive to assume that altruism is the whole story.
A few years earlier, the Resnicks’ Justin Vineyards had been caught clear-cutting an oak forest near Paso Robles to make room for new grape plantings. The work was halted by San Luis Obispo County authorities, and the firm eventually agreed to donate the 380-acre parcel to a land conservancy.
Although the Resnicks say they are “dedicated to our role as environmental stewards,” their Fiji Water subsidiary looks like the antithesis of environmental sustainability. It profits from transporting water in plastic bottles more than 5,500 miles from the island nation to California and beyond, places that already have abundant water.
Wonderful’s pistachio and almond orchards have complicated efforts to apportion water among the state’s competing stakeholders. Because the trees require watering in wet years or dry, their acreage can’t be fallowed during dry spells.
That has made the water demand of the agricultural sector less flexible, and arguably has contributed to the devastating decline of the state’s salmon fishery and the drying out of rivers and streams that once supported a diverse population of fish and birds.

Bottled water is a pure example of Bourdieu’s idea of distinction: the water’s no different than a public water source and often comes from a public water source with no other processing; the added value comes entirely from the qualities attributed to it. You buy it to be distinguish yourself from other water drinkers: yours is a pure beverage, with a pedigree and a narrative.
It costs more money, it has to have some quality of “better” to it, after all.
Fiji water just achieved a particularly skillful version of this, combining exclusivity and exoticism and aesthetics.

Just checked online and for the latest quarter that ended in March, the effective tax rate for BH was 18% which is not too far off the nominal tax rate. It has been over 20% as recently as 2019. Can’t find any year where they made a profit and the rate was 6%.

Florida lawmakers on Friday voted to approve a $117.46 billion state budget for the upcoming fiscal year.That budget will include a $10 billion surplus, $500 million set aside for paying off the state’s debt and implement another round of tax cuts aimed at easing financial burdens on Floridians.
The tax relief totals $1.5 billion. Of that, $500 million is for property insurance tax relief. Lawmakers are also bringing back the “Freedom” summer tax holiday in July.

I didn’t dig into it that much, was just going by the quote and their recent profits. I am guessing that must be a really old quote because it looks like the last time Berkshire Hathaway had a $5 billion tax bill was like 2011ish

Usually, when there are controversies involving college commencement speakers, they revolve around the speakers themselves—who they are, what they’ve said in the past, etc. Like when then-Vice President Mike Pence spoke at Notre Dame or more recently when Jerry Seinfeld spoke at Duke.
That’s why Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker may have seemed like an innocuous choice for Benedictine College, a Catholic school in Kansas. If you know anything about him—and you probably don’t—it’s wrapped up in football and not politics.
Butker’s speech, however, was a culture war cannonball in which he channeled Matt Walsh, telling women to remain housewives and baby-makers while trashing abortion rights, LGBTQ people, and progressive Catholics.
Some professional athletes, thinking about their post-playing careers, consider coaching or becoming a commentator. It’s clear that Butker would much rather be a talking head on conservative channel.
One final note: When the Los Angeles Chargers released their schedule yesterday (in what has become a hilarious social media spectacle for every NFL team), they appeared to show Butker (who wears #7) in the kitchen.

‘Megalopolis’: Francis Ford Coppola’s Opus Is the Laughingstock Everyone Feared
Giggles abounded at the Cannes premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s latest, which lived up its buzz as an absolute trainwreck. Yet it’s so silly it may be destined for cult status.
About midway through a press screening of Francis Ford Coppola’s much-discussed and long-awaited Megalopolis at the Cannes Film Festival, the screen went black and someone ascended the stage in front of it. For a moment, you could feel the entire theater on edge as if something had gone desperately wrong. Maybe there was a technical issue? Maybe we would need to evacuate? Instead, the person took out a mic and “played” the role of a reporter asking Adam Driver’s character questions at a press conference following a major disaster. Driver, of course, remained on screen and when his answer was finished the man left the stage and returned to his seat in the front row.
In a movie full of bizarre and baffling choices, this was maybe the most inexplicable. Does Coppola imagine this happening at every screening of the film? And if so, what are the logistics of that? And what is the point? To ostensibly represent living humanity in his movie about the future? Or just for kicks?
That said, the sequence, live actor included, also may have predicted what is to come for Megalopolis. This is the kind of movie that will live on in midnight screenings. The phrase “destined to be a cult classic” gets thrown around a lot these days and mostly inaccurately—something that is weird but popular and critically acclaimed does not a “cult classic” make—and yet it seems to actually apply here. Megalopolis is stilted, earnest, over the top, CGI ridden, and utterly a mess. And yet you can picture a crowded theater shouting along with Jon Voight as he says in one key scene, “What do you make of this boner I got?”
This is maybe not the fate that Coppola wants for Megalopolis, a film he has been thinking about making for decades and in which he invested millions of his own money. (One too that has already been beset by controversy.) The film itself has grand ambitions too, with its near-persistent references to ancient Rome and its Marcus Aurelius quotations.
However, Cesar’s actual goals, ostensibly the point of this whole thing, are vague and Megalopolis itself ends up looking like Hudson Yards. If there’s a political message on screen, that too is muddied. Moments where a Confederate flag and a swastika turn up are jolting and out of place, and a montage about civilization that features Hitler and 9/11 is cringe-inducing. And most of it takes place against a backdrop that can best be described as screen-saver-esque.
Still, Megalopolis is the kind of thing that has to be seen to be believed. Many will find it uproarious, others may locate some profundity, most will have to shake their heads. Whatever it is, it’s a lot. And I do hope that someone is required to get up and pretend to ask Adam Driver questions every single showing. It’s part of the experience.

Current federal corporate tax rate is 21% Take the 5bn and work backwards and you’ll see that taxable income is in the 24bn range. That means that BH has some huge tax credits or more likely some huge deferred items. If you check out their financials (10-k report) and find the deferred tax item, you can do the math to see how much income is deferred.
