I remember Rick Santorum talking about how his grandfather “worked until the day he died”, which to me just sounded like he had a really poor pension plan.

Dad’s dad worked until the day he died at 91
His choice. He could have retired anytime. Self employed

Mom’s dad retired at 65 on the nose. Also self employed.
Lived to 94 and totally enjoyed it. They traveled a lot and lived a life of modest leisure.
Married to Grandma for 70 years.
