The original TMNT was a pretty dark revenge based martial arts comic, which just happened to use mutant animals as the protagonists. Once it went mainstream though, marketers decided to go heavy on the teenage and tone down the ninja, which is why it went from bloody revenge to “Cowabunga, lets eat some pizza dudes.”
