If you try to take AR-15s from folks who already have them people will die.

Banning them going forward will be difficult enough. Confiscating ones that are already out there will result in a shitload of bad press and anti-Dem sentiment, in addition the previously mentioned high risk of government employees getting killed.

This is a road Democrats can not afford to go down right now.

It’s really simple: you ban production, offer a buyback, and ban them in public. There’s no running into houses to confiscate them.
