re: #109 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Astrophysics is definitely an interesting field, but the math required is intense. I have a friend from high school who has her Ph.D. in it.

On the other hand, at least 75% of a Ph.D. is not knowing when to stop and working to teach yourself what you need to know. Actual percentage probably varies depending on the program.

That’s cool. I have two friends who quit Math Ph.D.s ABD, but were in pretty good shape to take on jobs in the private sector anyway. My advanced degree was the result of working to learn what I needed to know (and still is) because I didn’t have the imagination to think of another career.

Right now the boy is telecommuting?/videoconferencing? to a nearby high school to take Algebra. His school has made a little conference room with appropriate tech available. But the main thing is that he is into lots of stuff and I don’t want him to get too narrowly focused if that isn’t his natural inclination.
