Just watched an interesting video on an nearly forgotten German aircraft from the WWII era, the Focke Wulf FW-187. Kurt Tank was Germany’s greatest aircraft designer and this was one of his gems. Faster than the early Bf-109s, with far longer range, a better escort than the hideous Bf-110 it was apparently quite pleasant to fly as well.

Fortunately for the allies, our biggest ally in Germany, the German Air Ministry (Reichsluftfahrtministerium or RLM) was biased in favor of Willie Messerschmidt against Kurt Tank and so the FW-187 was sidelined.

The Germans never had the resources - natural or financial - to win WII. But had they not been such idiots, they might have done things like build Tank’s Lightning and that might well have made the Battle of Britain and the Bomber campaigns even more of a bloody hell than they already were.
