re: #79 Targetpractice

As the article notes, we heard the same BS about “corporate info” and “trade secrets” from Jimmy Johns when they were found out for enforcing non-competes against the guys making sandwiches, barring them from even thinking of going to work for Subway or any other sandwich shop within 2 miles of their former employer for 2 years.

It pretty much is the way it looks: Kathy killed this bill because Wall St and other major firms in NYC breathed down her neck about closing their wallets if she didn’t allow them to keep the young bucks on the top floor from thinking about running to the competition.

There are certain industries where non-competes are really important. I don’t know how broad the bill that got vetoed was, but in industries like law firms, any sort of consultancy, financial management etc. Companies go through a lot of effort to bring in clients and then assign a consultant or attorney to the client, the client builds a relationship with that person not necessarily the company, you can’t have them running off and bringing all those clients with them.
