I think what was the tipping point here was the double whammy of federal investigators starting to sniff around the state followed by the Port Authority informing Wildstein that no, they would not be paying his legal bills. He’s looking at bankruptcy to launch a defense that likely won’t succeed, and so is now signaling a willingness to make a deal to roll on his boss.
