Considering that postbellum Southerners flocked to the Democrats because they were against the party of Lincoln and then fled the Democrats because they were against the party of Lyndon Johnson, I think that it’s safe to say that their politics are more about whom they’re against than what they’re in favor of.

Conservatives believe somehow that party platforms are immutable. So this @Elk_eater guy on Twitter was arguing that Democrats of today would love Andrew Jackson because he was a Democrat. When I pointed out many of Andy’s policies directly contradicted those of later Dems, like FDR and LBJ, he swiftly changed the subject to, “well, libertarians are best!”
