You really shouldn’t claim a genealogical background if you can’t prove it, especially if you claimed it in an official sort of way. In genealogy, you don’t claim until you can prove, not the other way around.

Otherwise we could all claim to be directly descended from anyone we wished, and say “prove that I’m not.”

Where did she claim it in an official way? Did she actually claim she was Cherokee, or did she claim she had Cherokee ancestry. Those two claims are different.

My wife claims some Scot and some French in her ancestry. I believe her because both the Scots and the French routinely took aboriginal wives.
