On my honor, I will try
To do my duty, to God* and my country
To help other people at all times
And to obey the Girl Scout laws.*That evil word again.
This was the creed when I was a scout in the 70s. We also said the Pledge every morning (“One nation under God”). They are certainly more particular about those kinds of things now, but I have to say, there was nothing whatsoever religious about Scouting nor was there anything religious in public school, except for Christmas Trees and Menorahs in December.
As a Jew I learned to personally dismiss any kind of Christian references if I ever did see them. It wasn’t a big deal.
We had a very religious discussion about Easter in my second troop that pretty much ended my scouting involvement. I was confused, mostly.
