Local news outlets indicated police were investigating the tragedy, and one such outlet reported that eyewitness had stated Sheats went back into her house for more ammunition as her daughters lay wounded in the street:

An eyewitness saw Taylor, Madison and Jason running out of their home. According to the eyewitness, the young women were already wounded. The neighbor said Taylor collapsed on the street and he saw Christy come outside with a gun and then go back inside to reload. When she emerged again, she shot Madison in the back, according to the eyewitness.

Another neighbor who witnessed part of the incident told reporters that Christy Sheats was shot as she approached a dying Madison Sheats, possibly with the intent to shoot the teenager again. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office tweeted twice about the shooting, once during the incident and once again afterwards to identify the deceased:
