Creationism is now 100% reactionism to modernity. A religious person in the late 19th or early 20th century may have maintained a creationist belief because, well, there just wasn’t as much known about earth’s past in those days, compared to today.

But today - creationism is all about staking out an identity.

If you insist that the Bible is to be taken literally, then you must reject Evolution, as well as most of the rest of science that supports evolution and a non-Biblically literal origin of the world, along with history, and even basic logic, since the Bible contradicts itself in several places.

And there are people willing to do so, as you said, to establish an “identity”
