re: #216 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

It has very few of the trappings. It has no real rule of law, no functioning government (the last elections were ages ago), no ability to freely trade, etc.

What aspects does it have that are the aspects of a nation-state?

Working from this Wikipedia page for the definitions.
en.wikipedia.org

1. Gaza has a permanent population.
2. Gaza has a defined territory.
3. Gaza has one government.* (Which appears to be Palestinian Authority trappings, but fully controlled by Hamas.)
4. It, however, doesn’t really have the ability to enter into relations with other states. Instead, it’s once again connected to the greater Palestinian Authority and then we get into the whole independent Palestinian state quagmire.

However, Gaza seems to be neither dependent on nor subject to any other power or state. Egypt washed their hands of them, and Israel unilaterally withdrew from the territory. They’re supposedly part of the Palestinian Authority territory, but de facto Hamas control pretty much has them independent of that.

You could argue dependency on Egypt or Israel for access to resources, but that’s not explicit political dependency.

How’s that for a start?
