What’s the purpose. ID? Tying them to their source? Certification? Seems like it would be easy enough to polish them off and etch in new numbers. Sounds like its a DeBeers security kabuki dance.

Making a diamond light up properly requires pretty exacting cuts to the diamond. Polishing the numbers off so that they aren’t visible to someone with a magnifying glass would change their shape, and therefore how the light travels through the diamond.
