This is an excellent observation from Finnish military historian Petri Mäkelä. The Dirlewanger Brigade, named for its psychopathic leader, was a Waffen SS unit made up of criminals and thugs. It was so bad that other SS men complained about its brutality and lack of discipline.

Too bad Eddie Gallagher will be unlikely to share Oskar Dirlewanger’s fate. IIRC, Dirlewanger evaded capture right up until the war was almost over, but was finally captured and ID’s by a Red Army detachment. Who then simply turned him over to a group of his former prisoners, and walked away….
