Most of that was just urban legend stuff, records only show about 80 cases of tampering (pins, razors) and none of poisoning. Only 80 cases over how many years, in a country with a population our size? Your kid has much more chance of being struck by lightening while trick or treating than getting tampered candy I would think.

Didn’t (doesn’t) matter. In that it happened, people took the necessary precautions for their children, THE most important job as a parent. If the “tradition” could be replaced as I described (church/ school trunk or treats, etc) and the kids have a great time, why not?
