re: #318 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

We’re waiting to hear back now how to proceed further, ADD and Dyslexia have both been hinted at, but like you, they don’t want to diagnose it. The teacher and the school resource teacher both agreed she could use the assessment and I put my request in writing at our conference yesterday. I’m going to be a pain in the ass until I get her in a program and see progress.

Definitely be a pain in the ass. The pain-in-the-ass assertive parent is the child’s first defense against being dropped through the cracks. The kids I’ve seen who really didn’t get the best out of their IEPs tended to have parents who:

1. Were uneducated
2. Didn’t speak English well
3. Were scared of the school
4. Didn’t want to upset anyone
5. Were unable to get their act together
6. Had situations that made it impossible for them to meet with the teachers and admin (work, other kids, etc.)

(Any combination of these is, of course, possible.)

Of course, it is possible to go a little too far in advocating for your child. There’s ONE mom I’m specifically thinking of here…oh my GAWD.
