I will note that the graphic in the NYT article is based on a high emissions scenario, one which I’ve asserted before is unlikely to play out.

Not because of forethought and care, but simple economics. A great deal of the carbon resources left in future decades will be very low quality or hard to produce, thus non-carbon sources like wind and solar will continue to increase in desirability.
