Well, his son wasn’t killed because he was Muslim, he was killed because he was an American servicemember but we definitely do need to point out that groups like ISIL, Al Queda, and the Taliban certainly do target other Muslims. In fact, the Taliban was targeting Muslims and a lot of people on the American right more or less shrugged their heads. It wasn’t until 9/11 that the Taliban became what it is today to most Americans.

The Muslims Da’esh kills aren’t killed because they’re Muslim either, they’re killed because they’re the wrong kind of Muslim, meaning Shia, sufis, or anyone else who disagrees with them. Khan being in the U.S. military would’ve unquestionably put him in their enemy category (even though they couldn’t have possibly known he was Muslim).
