I’m less analytical: When intergender fighting becomes a popular spectator sport, thousands (of the millions) of spectators will get a socially-destructive message. “Don’t hit girls” is an illogical but very useful inhibition that took millenia to make popular.
I’d say that it’s not a really firm inhibition, though. Girls get hit all the time. Spousal abuse is rampant, and sexual assault is rampant as well. I read it the other way: to whatever extent there’s an inhibition against hitting girls, there’s an inhibition against girls hitting, at all, even in self-defense.
