Which is simply putting forth that the bad guys are psychopaths. They are going to kill the two women — but decide to “play” with them first and try to break them before killing them. Perhaps to prove to themselves that the women were as “bad” as they were and thus deserved their fate.

Well, except in this story, the bad guys know that they’re bad guys and they simply don’t care how many people they kill. They just basically kill anyone who crosses them—don’t feel any need to prove that the people they kill deserve it.
