Ok. I could buy that.
I just thought Patrick was an allegory for the darker side of American culture.
The difference to me was that Bruce Wayne was able to choose his path, Bateman had no choice. He was what he was.

Batman/Bruce Wayne lives in a world where Patrick Bateman’s are a dime a dozen.

Batman lives in a fictional uber violent crime ridden world called Gotham City.

Patrick Bateman/American Psycho lived in the Reagan era New York.
