It is literally the last remnant. Skies are brightening outside my apartment, and the radar is clear in Boston. Revere got whacked by a tornado several years ago, so it can and does happen here. Salem itself was last hit by a tornado in 1952.

Yeah: tornados are rare in New England, but hardly unknown.
Our summer palazzo house in the Berkshires is sited only a few hundred yards from the track of the last major twister to hit the area (1995). However, since the last tornado before that was in 1947, we figured a 40-50 year probability window was not something we should worry about unduly.
