I don’t. There’s been a rash of people using it lately to basically just mean ‘partisan’, or to mean ‘fanatical’. We have words for those concepts already.

Tribalism is really the wrong word to use for this. Tribes are small groups of interdependent people sharing a group identity. The key is that they’re actually interedependent; they also tend to have a relatively flat social structure and are cooperative. In short, tribes, and being tribalistic, have a lot of positive attributes to it, and the only perceived negative one is a strong group identification.

Why bastardize a word and erase its much more nuanced meaning just to come up with another word for ‘fanatic’ or ‘partisan’?

If these fuckers actually were tribalistic, at least they’d understand the concept of interdependence.
