And for this, I blame our corporate culture. Really, American corporate culture is terribly unhealthy and, to be perfectly blunt, counter-productive. Watching full-time employees of my client grumble about the under-the-table “mandatory” 48-hour work week is painful.

We seem to have enshrined management-labor as an adversarial relationship, or at least a zero sum game, in our popular culture. And a lot of folk have taken it to heart since it’s often easier and has less emotional cost to treat everyone as competitors or replaceable cogs.
