Living next to New Jersey, working with New Jerseyites, and being a New Jerseyite by birth certificate* I can say that the issue is still *assholes*. It’s just that NJ has a somewhat unfair reputation for having a higher proportion of them than other places. And I think being tucked between NYC and Philadelphia has something to do with it as well. A common dumping ground for snark from both directions.

* - Born there, but family moved to Indiana before I was a year old. So I doubt I received much cultural contamination. And my parents were from NY and PA.
