It’s religious and cultural both, but with a main root in the extremist Salafist rhetoric. There’s also the idea that The West has persecuted and taken advantage of the Arab states in different ways— never mind that, to the extent that’s true, it was mostly the British. The US has meddled too, but nowhere near enough to deserve a lethal level of ire.

Mostly, it’s the extremist variations of Islam. Not just Salafism, but that’s the main problematic one.

The “colonial” excuse will be with us for generations to come, just as the slavery one will be in the USA, regardless of a Black president.

But the operative word is excuse.

In the case of Pakistan one should remember that for the most part they are the same people as those in India except for the religion they were born into (I doubt there are many born again Muslims in Pakistan) and they have the same colonial history, which borders they chose to change willingly and freely.

So we are left with religion and, I hasten to add, not only against the West.
