I don’t think third parties are actually viable on their own. Proportional representation and parlaments certainly allow multiple parties but our winner take all system all but guarantees two parties. The existing two parties also protect that turf against third parties.

So the Tea Party isn’t a real party but rather an unofficial part of the Republican Party. Instead, I think the Republicans will fracture and stay out of power. Kind of a time out. Then they’ll cool down. Rinse, repeat.
